- "Things Even a Monkey Should Know" is a show about things EVERYONE should know about doing fixes around the house, yard and cars. This is the last in a series of four segments which takes us on the (fun!) journey of replacing a tiled shower floor. This last week I am sealing my newly tiled and grouted floor.

If you would like to purchase the same or similar products I used in this video, you can buy them through Amazon (among other places). If you purchase from my links to Amazon you are helping support my channel because I may get a bit of the sale. Yay!
*511 Impregnator Sealer amzn.to/3p4W7JI
*Sponge brushes for if you have straight grout lines amzn.to/2YYuXcH Amazon does sell other brands. This is a nice variety pack though and these things do come in handy!
*Or skinny corner sponge roller if you prefer a roller for straight grout lines amzn.to/3tGbU5a
*Small sponge roller if you have irregular grout lines amzn.to/36YbaP9
*GE Shower Caulk in white amzn.to/2OlURVY
*Shower Caulk in clear because you don't want white if your grout is another color! amzn.to/36VyKfe Another case where Amazon sells some alternative brands and colors.
Absolutely brilliant title. I have been dealing with a contractor for 3 years because they tell me my expectations of keeping the grout white past a few weeks of installation or regrouting was unreasonable. They tried every excuse to justify they weren’t at fault. I don’t have the language at the time to explain what or how went wrong ( not to mention a few tiles aren’t flush in height but they said that the work has done with good craftsmanship anyhow 😅) Just discovering this step that they most certainly did not do so no wonder, or advise me to do it. If you own it you have to learn at least what it takes to execute because contractors will con you and gaslight you.
Oh my gosh, they sure will! I learned this the hard way too. Hopefully you’re able to get your tile fixed!
Thanks Tamera! I have waited and been stood up by handyman for months now,I will just do it!
The soapy water was a great tip, I've always had trouble with calking sticking to my finger. I'm sorry you don't do the videos anymore, but I understand your reasoning. I watched many of them today and found them informative and your presentation quite enjoyable.
Best video I’ve seen on how to use this product, thank you.
This is a great and comprehensive walk through of this process and I’ve seen many videos on this
Thank you! Hope it is helpful! ☺️
Wow Tamara, That really came out nicely! A person won't find that tile selection at their big box home improvement store! You really have some great ideas for making the mundane tasks like a re-tile unique. (Painting a washer-dryer! :-)) If a person was planning on selling their home and was making repairs in preparation for showing/open house etc., a project like this could add value to the asking price and make the home stand out from other potential buying choices. Great Job!
+Steve Patrick Thank you!!
I’m
Kudo's Tamara! Your presentation and pleasant disposition were flawless! I could see you with a segment on Ask This Old House. Thank you
what a great job i love your show you are very informative i have always been good at that kind of stuff, but you taught me a few things. that tile job was beautiful.you make it fun to watch with your upbeat attatude thanks.
Wow! great job on the tile!!
Thank you!
Love shower floor tile ! Really nice .
That shower is such a great design 🙂 thanks for the video
I so love this shower floor. What is it and where from!?
Love that floor!
Thank you
Patricia
Thank you! ☺️
Regarding the edges of the shower, you applied sealant over the grout and then finished with caulking. Are there any issues with putting caulking over sealant?
I was wondering if you sealed the walls too besides just the floor ? Thanks- good job by the way
I didnt didnt see the product, only blue bottle, most important. Good show
You’re a very good presenter.
Great explanation, and enjoyable to watch
A woman who is Crafty and beautiful love it
😊
Hi, after using this product to seal how do you clean regularly your shower without tempering with the seal? Can this be used on the walls as well? Thank you!
Best Always Tamara.
This is a great video! Thank you!
Great tutorial! Thanks.
I didn't find an answer to the question about Shower Tile Walls with Grout. Is the 511 Impregnator Sealer used and same method to apply and wipe?
Should be!
You should actually spray the soppy water onto the joint after you apply the caulking then wipe the joint with your finger and then you will achieve a perfect job ! It keeps the caulk from sticking to the floor and wall as you wipe the joint with your finger !!! So much of a time saver and so much less mess and a better finished product !
Thank you for the tip! Will definitely do this on the next round.
You have very high standards for what monkeys should know.
😂 I aim for the stars!
Should you always caulk last? Could you also caulk and then seal everything?
Caulk before sealing. Also one can use a silicon based tile grout caulking for the whole job. The caulking comes in many colors, sanded and unsanded.
Thanks for the soapy water tip, I will try this on my backsplash project!
Hi Tamara, this video was very informative. Thank you. I wanted to ask: Do you put back the remaining sealer solution back into the original can if any is left over after you finish sealing the grout?
hello Safina I know answer
Thanks for your video
Well done work and video. Only beef on my end would be the title, since monkeys have proven so many times to more intelligent than many fellow sapiens. ...but if the title make you happey so be it.
Your shower came out awesome!
Thanks for the great video!
My pleasure! ☺️
I love it... Looks great!
+Noelle Montalvo Thank you!
Does this prevent grout from darkening when wet ?
It does not. The grout will darken slightly when wet. This sealer penetrates the grout and soaks in (which might cause a very slight darkening to begin with) so the grout looks natural, or like it has nothing on it, when dry though it is well protected from water. Depending on where the grout is located you may want to check out a non penetrating grout sealer. This kind of sealer is not for areas that are wet all the time (like a bathroom) but has less chance of darkening since it sits on top of the grout.
@@MonkeysKnow I am confused. Did you put 511 impregnate sealer on your shower floor ? Sorry if dumb question.
Not at all a dumb question! Yes, I did use the 511 impregnator sealer since this was a shower floor. Until you asked your question, I had not thought about that it darkened the floor a tiny bit. The color change is minimal.
@@MonkeysKnow what I am trying to fix is grout getting darker when wet from shower water and then it drys lighter. It bugs me !
I understand! I have asked a friend who lays tile and as far as his knowledge goes, sealers that are shower safe are going to have a little bit of color change when they get wet. The non penetrating sealers won’t have a color change, but they also run the risk of trapping water in your grout and causing mildew (this is why they’re not recommended for wet areas). A grout paint *might* do away with the color change but not guaranteed. You also might try contacting a store specializing in tile and grout. They may know of a product that would solve this. I’m sorry I couldn’t provide a more sure answer!
How long do you have to wait between for second application ? Can't find that answer anywhere.
You should not need to apply a second coat of sealer. If you’re wondering how long it lasts (years or months), most of them say on the container. My rule is usually to reseal every couple of years.
You talked to much and didn't show to to put the seal on, I just saw the small roller you had and that's it 🤔🤔🤔
If you can paint you can put this on :)
Good job. But dont run the fan. Let that stuff soak in, circulation doesn't help. Also color matched sanded grout cault instead of silicone
its amazing video , you need keep going dady
Wear a respirator! The once meant for VOC's that painters wear. Other than that, great vid!
Great point! I do these days!
You caulking gun has a spot just for cutting off the tip of your caulking tube.
I'm crying. Great comment. Esp bc the title of the video lol
You should have had a respirator on that sealer is very bad to breathe in. It states that on the label.
511 has low VOC's now
Mark Markovic I just sealed my new 25 sq ft shower floor with 511 Porous Sealer. It had a very strong chemical smell and gave me a slight headache. I didn't wear a respirator but probably should have.
Bet. I was afraid to buy it yesterday after reading the label and seeing "cancer" I decided to check out some videos etc .
rubbing alcohol works perfect for cleaning up excess silicon.
Great idea!
your caulk gun will have a cutter built in
ummmm.......what if you caulked first? (She says as the caulk dries.....)
Penetrating sealers only address porosity in grout not the sandy texture that traps soils and sticky sugar and oils or in the case of a shower soap scum and hard water deposits. Mopping does not pick up the soils and grunge that builds up. Doing this for over 20 years we recommend Color sealing as the premier product to seal grout. Mosaic shower pans are less common but we have developed a way to color seal even those. Clear penetrating sealers can't fix permanent stains in the grout or any hairline cracks needing repair. Check out an even faster cleaner way to apply a better kind of sealer. 3 feet in 2 seconds with no cleaning the tile. No sealer gets on the tile with this little tool.ua-cam.com/video/W8pPbphkcBM/v-deo.html
like your experience
Monkeys are smarter than humans it's proven
No doubt!
Your application is too fast so we couldn’t see exactly what you are doing.
6:27 😍🥰
LIKE YOUR I WILL DO A GOOD JOB APPROACH THAT ALONE IS WORTH WATCHING === DID YOUR HOMEWORK DETALILS ARE GOOD AND NOW MY PROBLEM EVER PAINT GROUT===================================
Do yo seal a tile wall?
I would, otherwise the porous qualities of the grout will allow mildew to take a stronger hold. It will grow more easily and be more difficult to remove.
@@MonkeysKnow Thanks!
Yes, definitely !!
But Clean that Wall grout First !
Tile Cleaner, Borax/water paste, Hydrogen Peroxide or Brightening Toothpaste clean tile. Buy several Grout Brushes @ H.D. Good Luck!
Concrobium will Kill Mold …Apply and wait according to instructions, then Rinse. 1 Qt 13.49/ 1 Gal $40 @ Home Depot. Cheers
@@jeffbilbo3313 It is recommended to Seal the Grout at least Twice, before use.
Try using a damp micro fibre cloth instead of finger
Talk to much
Dago Aguilar then don’t watch asshole
I'm sorry but those shower blocks look horrible....
Why thank you!
Na , I like those shower blocks.
@@MonkeysKnow I'm sorry that some people are so acidic. Thank you so much for sharing this video. You did great!
Why are you talking so much??it would be great if you talk less and do much
