I replaced the dishwasher heating element but it still didn't work. The BEST fix ending up being to replace the Flood Switch, which has a thermostat unit built in.

If the switch doesn't resolve your issue, check your heating element, look for any signs of breaks or cracks.
Also, I believe it's important to prevent the root cause to keep from having to replace this sensor every so often. We were, for the longest time, using the good dishwashing detergent. We ran upon hard times and ended up using the cheapest stuff we could find. After 2 months, it wasn't cutting the grease we were putting through the dishwasher and it backed up the sensor. I tried to clean it but nothing but replacing it helped.
Do yourself a favor and use good products in your dishwasher. Below are the links to products we use in our home. Try to clean your dishwasher at least once a month with the Allfresh dishwasher cleaner packs. The Cascade helps to break down all of the grease on plates. Give it a try and let me know what you think in the comments section below.

Thank you! My dishwasher wouldn’t warm: I tried the obvious step of replacing the heating element. Didn’t work. Was resigned to buying a new one when I found this video and it worked. Great explanation to help a not so handy guy. Just wish I had found it earlier, would have saved me spending $70 on a heating element.

I try to get the word out but unfortunately it seems people only find it when they have 1) replaced the heating element or 2) have been told by a repairman to buy a new dishwasher! Glad you found it before you replaced the whole thing though. Thanks for commenting!

Thank you. This helped me. I never had a dishwasher before and I hate washing dishes but don't got no money. Then I found this gem in s ditch and accepted it as a gift from God. I expected it was broken but that's no problem. Since I'm basically a mechanical wizard, I fix everything. So it was missing it's door latch interlock switch assembly so I bybassed that and brought it life. Shit started happening but it wouldn't fill with water. I bench tested the water inket valve and it works fine. So the orange wire comes over to this part which is identical to that which you just replaced. Mine is probably jammed up or something. What would really help me is knowing how it works inside. I'm going to take it apart and clean it and gain an understanding of how it works and then plastic weld the cage back on and put it back in. And hopefully I never have to wash a dish again for as long as I live. Hurray! Thanks man dude. Video was a little long. I like videos that assume the watcher is actually not a complete idiot but I guess there are actually a surprising number of idiots. Few wizards. I did thumbs up tho. Just because you have good personality. Ok goodbye

One tip I might add. While I struggled a bit to remove the wire harness from the flood switch, I was fearing that the harness itself would fall back through the hole when I tried to separate it from the switch. So, like the idea to put a paper towel in the drain hole, I put a paper towel in the hole at the bottom of the well to prevent the harness from accidentally falling back through it. I did manage to successfully unclip the harness without fear. Great instructional video!! Thank you.

I watched your video two days ago and replaced this part yesterday. The float/flood part was definitely bad because it didn’t make a sound when I shook it. Put the new part in and the dishwasher wouldn’t start initially. I unplugged it for awhile because I decided to look underneath the dishwasher for a bit. When I plugged it back in it beeped! I ran an empty load with vinegar to give it a good cleaning and checked for leaks. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Now I have to replace the detergent dispenser. 😊

Thanks!!!...worked perfectly by replacing the float WS21X10519....could have gotten it on line. But, purchased at local parts store ($43 +tax), since I wanted it fixed ASAP!! Also, took advice about plugging the drain hole while removing and re-installing screws. Saved me a lot of grief!!! Took apart the old float...full of gunk and detergent residue which hampered the switch.🍀🍀🍀🍀

Thanks for the instructional video! I was able to replace the flood switch thanks to your directions, but it turned into more of a project than your example. My dishwasher didn't have enough slack wire to be able to plug the new switch in, so I had to pull the whole dishwasher out and disconnect another part of the wiring harness to get enough slack to work with. It's back together now, and we're loading it up for a test run. THANKS!

Thanks for the tip of getting all the water cleaned out first. It's a really good idea to prime it before running it through a cycle. Take a pitcher of water and dump it on top of flood switch until it's covering the flood switch. It will suck air if you don't prime or first.

Thanks so much for this video. I ordered this part and fixed my GE Dishwasher model number GDT580SSF2SS. The water level was lower than it should have been (top arm wouldn't turn) and the element wouldn't heat. This fixed both issues. My part also did not "rattle" like the new one so the float was stuck in it. The hardest part for me was hooking the wiring harness back on. Pay attention to the orientation when you take the old one off. This really helped me - I never would have deduced it was this part without this video.

Great video pal...thanks for posting this. I found it very detailed, diligent with some useful tips on covering those holes with paper towel from losing those nuts. I followed to the "T" to resolve my issue to open and clean the Float Switch and put it back and guess what my washer started working like a champ again.
For those who are wondering... my issue started after I cleaned my dish washer as it was smelling with all debris at the bottom. I may have twisted the flood switch hoping it would turn but guess not. It appears like it disconnected the underlying power harness and as a result my dishwasher was not filling or spraying with water but does drain okay and heats fine. Removing and putting the flood switch back resolved my issue. My Model GE GDF540HSF4SS came with our house in 2015.

Using a wee dab of petroleum jelly in the pocket of the nut driver would cause the hex head self tapping screws to adhere to the nut driver's pocket, and implement the reassembly of the flood switch replacement tremendously! I didn't bother to count how many times you dropped the screws... I've done a bit of mechanical repair work over my years, and that's a quick and easy trick to help everyone.
    .
I strongly recommend using petroleum jelly rather than heavy axle grease, the heavy stiff grease won't melt and wash away like the petroleum jelly will...
    .
Thanks for this video, I was about to call a repairman (and pay to the tune of 200+ dollars for the parts, service call, and labor. I haven't replaced my flood switch just yet, but it will be ordered as soon as I'm done with this comment.

@@BreakFixRepair FYI, I followed your instructions to the letter, yes I plugged that hole with a paper towel, and yes I dropped a screw down there even though I used petroleum jelly, but a handy pair of needle nose pliers saved the day.
Bottom line: I repaired our dishwasher and I did it in about 20 minutes total. Most of the time was spent soaking up the dishwater.
Tested it, and it's working great, HOT WASHING and hot drying.
BFR, Man you saved us at least $150-$175 dollars in service calls and parts.

One thing I would add is to temporarily hold harness is to use a hook of a bungee cord or similar so you don't let go of it. The other is to definitely a magnetic tip nut driver.

Our dishwasher (same as the video) had basically become a dish moistener. Lots of globby gunk left on the dishes. Most of the silverware still dirty. Didn't heat the water or dry properly. Reminded me of the little girl in the commercial, "So, what does the dishwasher DO?" With guidance from this video I took out the flood switch and found it impacted with gook. Tried to wash it out but couldn't get the float to move. Called my local appliance parts store who had them in stock. It was pricier than A..... ($58) but we have company incoming so I wanted it fixed ASAP. Bought one and installed it and the dishwasher is acting like its old self. Haven't finished running the first load but I'm confident that it is fixed. Thank you for making the video!

As senior citizens. we didn't want to have a repair person in the house in these c-virus times. In our household, I'm the mechanic. I browsed the web for fixes and when I found your step-by-step video with your patient and thorough instructions (funny, too), plus the positive comments, I felt confident. I ordered the float switch and nut driver. Once into the machine, I ran into a glitch. The nut bolts were frozen with a ring of calcium build-up, so I soaked them for a half-hour in distilled white vinegar. That made my repair take longer than most. But the repair was successful! Even thingI don't need to spend time pre-washing the dishes any more. Ts I didn't know were bad are now fixed. The ball inside the old flood switch didn't rattle around, so the water level had been low. Maybe that's why the glasses were smelly sometimes. Now the right water level is reached. The spray arms shoot out a heavy volume of water when I open it to add one more thing. The hot water with power boost is super hot. The hot air is really hot. And the machine is a lot quieter, too. So thanks again!

I knew it was out of warranty, but I called GE anyway. BIG MISTAKE. $250, two trips from the tech, and 3 weeks later and I still don't have heat in my dishwasher. Seriously, I think this tech is trying to get as much money out of me as possible. He replaced the wiring harness that goes from the control board to the heating element. All he did was plug his laptop into the control board and said, it's fixed. He left, I ran the dishwasher, still no heat. With the help of your videos and a couple others, I was able to test the element and it's good so I ordered a float switch that should arrive tomorrow. Hopefully, that solves the problem. Success! The most difficult part was the wiring harness, a little stubborn undoing and reconnecting. I took an extra step and put a long zip tie on the harness just below the plug and that kept it from getting away from me.
