As a current CO, I can attest that we aren't paid well at all. Overtime is where any potential money is. And the hours with mandates have just gotten out of hand. I don't like how the prison system treats their inmates. Respect is a two way street, I know it doesn't always go that route, but I try to treat them as people. This job has made me battle my morals. Larry, I'm not sure if you've ran into COs like that in your time, but thats why I like your content, it's unbiased. Keep up the great work my friend!
I left corrections for a reason. People in prison know what they did no need for people to poke the bear until you have to use a force.... I couldn't keep watching it. People deserve to be treated like people not animals. Respect goes along way with the people incarcerated.
@@tommyvalerius3853 the worst of it is when you catch yourself engaging in that foul treatment due to the long hours, feeling stressed and irritable. I've had incidents where I've thought to myself, "what have I done?" But not till the job was done. It's a scary mentality to live in.

$2000 a year increase is $40 a week so basically an extra $1 an hour more. She said $2000 instead of $1 an hr. Cause she knows it's a joke
It's actually less. .95 cents and that's at 40 hrs most corrections officers work a lot more than 40 hr weeks

Larry--Much Respect to you--I was a California prison Doctor of Optometry for 3 years in the 1980's. I was young & Idealistic; I thought I could make a positive difference--I was wrong ! The quality of medical care in California prisons is abhorrent-- Mostly staffed by foreign doctors ( India, Vietnam). I suspect some of these had forged foreign medical degrees. I believe in punishment as a deterrent & retribution for crimes, but prisoners should not be subjected to this. Much Respect to Larry from Colorado.
A lot of these political appointees are talking heads that collect 200k a year and then go onto lobbying/consulting firms in DC to make 1 million. They really don't give a fuck about what is happening to rank and file people, like you do. It blows.

Sounds like my country where simply to increase ITL staff so that prisoners can get to therapy and education classes regularly would be great. That instantly lowers unrest and violence, at least it does in the maxi where I work. Also, let’s have a full time dyslexia psychologist (preferably a minimum of two) for each prison site instead of testing these poor guys dozens of times to reinforce that they have learning conditions (and to rub their noses in their lack of literacy skills, which does nothing for custodial/prisoner relationships) which means they can’t read and write well, conditions that are then left unaddressed, yet we then throw a correspondence course at them, expect them to successfully complete the written modules by themselves in a cell, then say, “We gave them a chance but they turned it down: they didn’t even finish the course. No dedication, bad attitude. They even ripped up their cell (out of sheer frustration, but the response to that is classically, “We all have frustrations. Are we in prison?”) They obviously don’t want to change. No more support because they don’t want it.”
I’ll get off my soap box, now. But I’ll be back on it tomorrow.

You may know it already, but I've been a security officer for 14 years (never worked in prisons, though) and all I hear coming from this lady is an ocean of bullsh*t. That's the kind of speech that comes from all business owners/directors/managers.
"We'll raise salaries to help recruitment." Actual raise : $1 an hour.
"We'll open new positions to grow our work force." On the ground : still no new recruits and the forces are over-stretched.
"We'll put more money into mental help." Here is a phone line number... knock yourself out.
"We'll invest into repairing/building new structures." Like this brand new roof that was repaired last year, which is somehow still leaking and is even causing mold inside the walls ?
Man, that is a laughable speech... that too many business owners/directors/managers are having.

You absolutely SHOULD run to head the BoP.
$20 camera is not going to integrate into an eneterprise NVR system and also you will need infrastructure to be installed for each camera . On top of this you have the extra challenge of the cameras being in a prison which requires extra measures during install and difficulty of install. On the surface the $20 camera thing is an off the cuff comment that has not been thought about to depth

NYC DOC is 47k to start 92k after 5 years. Supposed to get new contract. Evidently a lot are leaving.
NYPD: is 58k to start. 130k after 5 1/2 years. S
NYC sheriff deputy. Is 36 to start and 92k after 5 1/2 years.
Departments are using increase pay and new contracts for incentives.
Currently installing a bunch of cameras around my house - professional style with 12 4k cameras and network storage. I wish I would have done this sooner, I didn't realize how cheap it can be done! My 12 cameras might not be prison grade, but they cost $20 each and they can see better than I can, even in the dark!
The idea that any institution would not be fully covered in 2024 is ridiculous, even a library has cameras!

Listen, Larry, I am with you on prison reform I don’t think that the prisoners are treated very well. I mean first of all yes they committed a horrible crime to get themselves thrown in prison to begin with, but that doesn’t mean that they’re basic human rights should be shot upon. I never had anyone that I knew in prison, except for my brother, went to jail for three months and he was violated, and I think that changed him a lot and he turned to drugs and alcohol when he got out to cope and you know cause in prison, you know you can’t snitch and so I mean when he got out of prison, he told us, but that was a far as it went, and he didn’t go into detail about what happened soI think that the bureau of prison needs to rethink their system that they’ve got in place in hire you to fix it because clearly you have a plan and you know what you’re doing you know what you’re talking about because you’ve actually been in prison

Get real Larry. No politician is going to do anything to appear "soft" on crime. Very rarely is a politician in the mood to solve a problem either.
It has nothing to do with being soft on crime. If these prisons are not run correctly they simply promote violence. Rehabilitation is necessary.

Why does she sound like a school teacher, talking to the kids, doesn't sound like a professional person,,
I dont think they can improve the system without consulting the inmates. but its hard to know who will give you the most actionable feedback. Theyre always trying to add more charges to criminals and inmates, but when its one of their own, they try to get them as little as possible.
A few points that need to be discussed further and Larry has taken things on face value.
$20 web cam is not going to interfere into an NVR. You also have to install the infrastructure that runs the extra cameras.
The higher percentage of those that are put in the hole are likely to come back to prison. Those that are put in the hole were probably included to come back anyway so that skews the numbers.
Putting less people in prison , look what’s going on in sanfransico where the cops not allowed todo their job .
