in the manga, the line when atsumu says "I'm moved shoyo kun" is a bit longer
    he thinks to himself
"It doesn't matter if it's short or if it's low,
he doesn't care if it's too close to the net either.
if his setter gave his all putting that ball up,
he'll take it every time... I'm actually moved, shoyo-kun"

In the manga, Tanaka said " That wasn't encouragement, it was a threat". Basically, Kageyama told him "I don't care if you're on a roll or having an off day, don't you dare abandon us in our time of need" when he said "No".

So the scene about the two captains as I interpreted it starts earlier in the episode. Kita, Inari's captain, says he doesn't particularly like the banner because he values consistency and not trying something new everytime, but he realizes that those who do are amazing and he wants to back his teammates. That's why when the twins miss their quick he's there to cover. He feels Daichi is similar to him so he's confused as to why Daichi would make himself a decoy instead of trying to cover for his teammates in case they get blocked or miss the spike.
Daichi rebuke that philosophy, saying that the concept of their team is to slug out every single attack so there's no point in him defending. It ends in a poetic way where Daichi actually get to spike an attack they almost never do, surprising Kita and then the ball hits their banner. Kita sees this and understands that's what "We have no need for memories" is all about and smiles.

      These scenes from the moment
Kita acknowledging Daichi's role > judging him for not following up Tsukki's attack > Daichi saying "I don't need memories" > Kita's smirking

As a warning, next episode has some very wonky ball physics in some scenes but also still has some of my favourite scenes in the entire show. I noticed the animation caught your eye a lot this episode (mostly bad unfortunately) but I hope it doesn't bother you too much in the next episode. It's genuinely a fantastic episode despite the animation problems (COVID issues were really catching up with them in these episodes unfortunately).
Regarding K-Pop, he's mostly just feeling competitive. He's basically seeing Kageyama's growth (since ironically K-Pop actually knows Kageyama pretty well) and feels driven to improve (which is why he starts running and yelling immediately until he notices the kid looking at him lol)

There were a couple moments in this episode that either got cut a bit or couldn't provide as much context due to differences in mediums, so I'll try and explain:
    1) When Tanaka thinks that he needs to live up to Kageyama's trust in him, the word he /thinks/ is "trust", but the word that is actually written in the manga is "threat" ("trust" is written above it, signifying that it's the way the author wants you to read this particular word). The official English translation for this actually wasn't so bad: "That wasn't some encouragement. That was a threat. He was saying, 'Show them why I have faith in you'". There's a bunch of way to interpret this and dig deeper, but, much like the title says, it shows how Kageyama's getting more comfortable with being a king of the court and ruling but also stepping back when necessary - just like Hinata said, it is his true nature.
    2) The whole last scene with Hinata's "gimme the next one too" is chef's kiss. Kageyama thought he was going to complain, because he did that at the training camp, but they key difference was that back then Kageyama backed down almost consciously, choosing to go easy on Hinata, but here he tried his best to set the ball. Before Atsumu says he's moved, he thinks this: "It doesn't matter if it's short or low. He doesn't care if it's too close to the net. If the setter gave his all putting that ball up, he'll take it every time". Basically Atsumu realized that Hinata's actually meeting all his standards as a player xD True competitors are all on the same page!

One thing I noticed is that with the twins' second 'Reverse' minus tempo quick, Osamu set the ball a little too high. I think it was due to Atsumu telling him in their previous reverse minus tempo that the set was a little low, so we see Osamu actually adjust his set(which does result in them not synching but it's still cool to see).

I remember when I first watch this I wasn't able to digest well what Kita was saying hahah but after rewatching it the second time I just realized how beautiful it is (and I'm still amazed now that I've watched it few more times) cause it is true that there are people who are born talented but what we are seeing now is not just a product of their giftedness but the tremendous amount of hard work and dedication they'd put up to. So it is true that it is rude if we think they're genius (or gifted) cause it's like we're saying that they are only that good cause they were born like that and invalidate their efforts.

  • @hugogamboas.5550
    @hugogamboas.5550 2 роки тому +6

One of the most beautiful parallels in the whole anime is Oikawa’s interpretation of what Talent and Genius means vs. Kita’s interpretation of what Talent and Genius means.
Oikawa initially thought talent was something that you had or didn’t have. But during their match against Karasuno at spring tournament qualifiers semis he grew to understand that talent, in a way, also meant to work to make your skill grow and bloom. This is in contrast to Kita, who describes it as a desire to work better and harder, and even goes as far as saying that telling talented people that they are ‘just geniuses’ is disrespectful to the work they put in.
I definitely agree more with Kita’s philosophy but the point is that this show does such a great job at drawing parallels between mindsets, philosophies and personal situations. It’s one of the reasons I love it so much.

I love the title of this episode. It sums up Kageyama's entire arc so nicely from the tyrant king, to over compensating goody-two shoes, back to embracing his competitive, "king-like" nature but now mature enough to properly communicate with his teammates- hence the serene king.

  • @Alwayz114

With episodes like this, you can really imagine the development of the animation. An artist going "Hey boss, we have Tsuki's hands in the wrong spot. Should we go back and fix that", to which the boss responds "It's fine, it works, we need all the time we have on Tanaka's spike. It's the apex of his character arc"
With tight budgets, both time and money, they spend their resources wisely imo

The Mita twins are super talented but also prone to losing focus and trying new things mid match. Even though their captain is a mostly defensive player, him being in the match makes the twins focus up and zone into the match more, hence why him going into the match is their best offensive tactic.

"Right now, every single time "now" is the best chance we've got." Most of us missed this quote from Atsumu because we are so much into the action.
Btw yellow one is the setter(Miya Atsumu) and grey one is the opposite hitter (Miya Osamu) but usually set the ball when Atsumu touch the ball first.

  • @anicka_kozume

Coach, i think you misunderstood why Oikawa (k-pop) was "pissed". He wasn't jealous of Kageyama. He saw the set that Kageyama gave to Tanaka and knew that Kageyama changed, Kageyama finally managed to be the best setter he can be (because he wasn't always a good setter due to him being "a king"). Kageyama learnt to understand his hitters, something he couldn't do before, and Oikawa really saw that - so he felt competitive, not jealous. He sees that Kageyama is improving, and he feels that he needs to be even better than that to be the best setter there is

I always thought the Serene King title referred to Tanaka because they made so many references to him finding restraint in himself and his volleyball play. With even Coach Ukai noting how he was on point and not going wild like he used to as the stress was continuing to build from Inarizaki. And then that bit at the end of that ridiculously clean line shot and the focus on his sister who’s also usually more rambunctious, just admiring in calm silence, the level her brother had reached. Same with Kageyama. I felt like those peace/calm expressions were brought on by Tanaka but yeah, that was just my read on the situation

Him putting Kita in helps keep Atsumu/Osamu at their best. As we saw when he came in before, Kita's presence on the court means that his teammates feel like they can't start to slow down, slack off or chill out because of the pressure that Kita applies.
So putting him in while both of the twins are playing at their best means his presence (Kita's that is) will continue to keep them performing at the highest level, meaning their attacks stay strong.
It's their strongest attack since so long as Kita is in, all of the attackers on Inarizaki are going to be playing at 110%, whereas had he potentially not come in, they may have become complacent, and potentially only work at maybe 90% of what they could be doing.

I just realized, right after Oikawa was shown being frustrated/motivated by seeing the Kageyama-Tanaka play... we see Kageyama doing a powerful jump service ace then deceptively changing to a soft jump serve, something that Oikawa did against Karasuno during clutch match point (forgot if S1 or S2).

  • @timfangrad5173
    @timfangrad5173 2 роки тому +2

I think you are kind of right about kita's "passively defensive" comment. Kita is a player whose only purpose is defense. He is never in the front row. Kita thinks that putting him in would send a message to the team to try and hold out versus stepping on the gas. As for the coaches response, everybody always plays harder when Kita is subbed in cause they don't want to be on the receiving end of his cold logic. If the Miya's see Kita coming back on, they know it's time to go full throttle cause Kita is backing them up, and cause they will be scolded if they slack off.

Coach, subtle detail in the episode towards the end right after they show Oikawa. Kageyama changes his powerful jump serve into a lofty float, which is exactly what happened in season 2 after oikawa punished Karasuno with a powerful jump serve. As much as Oikawa wasn’t the best to Kageyama, Kageyama has taken the best qualities of Oikawa and made them his own subconsciously. They have a super weird dynamic but seeing Kageyama do well in Nationals probably makes Oikawa strive to be better. In my personal opinion, it’s a love hate relationship.

Kageyama is totally Oikawa's fanboy. He keeps on learning from him. Also, when you consider how he said that he thought his middle school was strong, but in fact it was only that one Player that was amazing. And if you think of his full backstory in the manga, Spoiler! Tobio was doing pretty well when Oikawa was still in Kita ichi. He had someone to aspire to, who run in front of him (those run up the hill panels kill me every time), it was after Oikawa left it became so hard for Tobio.

What their coach meant when he said “…step on the breaks” means that the Miya twins will lose their momentum and slow down. Since they’re playing really good offensively, putting in a defensive idea will balance things out but at the same time, they are losing that “best offensive”. Even if the coach puts in their captain, and later takes him out, that momentum is lost forever. Both options are ok but playing offensive is better because it’s working so far; The more they play like this, the more momentum they can get.

    • @twossaint

Not quite. Inarizaki has a history of being unable to finish off their opponents when they are leading late in a match, as mentioned by some of their fans in the earlier episodes. Inarizaki’s coach put Kita in the game because of his role of keeping the team focused and accountable. So when the coach says, “The last thing they should do is put on the brakes.”, he’s saying that by putting by putting Kita in that the last thing the Miyas should do is slow down or stop attacking.

I always rewatched what Kita had said towards the last few minutes of the episode. It’s true that some people really have the talent for smth and in the case of Atsumu, it’s volleyball and being a good setter. The thing is, he needs to work harder in order for him to evolve. If he gets complacent and keeps relying on his “talent” then he wouldn’t be where he is right now. This a big lesson to all of us actually that we shouldn’t overestimate someone and not take on the challenge. We should all work hard so that we can evolve and be successful someday. There is no shortcuts to glory anyways😌💯💯

Kageyama went from dictator, who wanted to dictate exactly what each hitter would and should do, to a 180, where he overcompensated and became a "goody two-shoes", giving in to all requests and flaws of his spikers. Finally, he evolves to this serene king, where he won't dictate exactly what his hitters should do, yet also pushes them to do better than they think they can do.
He won't set you as high as you jump, but as high as he knows you can jump.

I just really love Kita's speach about "genius" because as an artist that was extremely relatable, I'm 20 years old and I always see 16/17 old artists that are more skilled than me wich makes me feel bad that I wasn't "born a genius like them" but then I always remember Kita's speach and I correct myself from those thoughts "they problably have drawn and studied a lot more than me" wich ends up motivating me to do more.

Forgive me if you already know this. Our coach Donny sometimes mentions about ASICS shoes. And we can see the footprint illustration with “ics” on players shirts. Foot is “Ashi” in Japanese. So it is Ashi-ics… I love this little joke :)

12:19 while watiching Tsukki's move, I had a feeling that the animation was off, as if his hands pass through the net. And it's kind of the case. I slow the video to 0.25 and when touching the ball, his hands are above the net, but the very next frame (after touching the ball) his hands are behind the net ! Tsukki got super powers xD

I know ive said to look forward to the next episodes lately but it genuinely gets a lot better in these last few episodes (looks like you already said it whoops) I didnt think he was gonna get hit in the face when it went silent and you see his more exaggerated appearance. Like i said last episode, do pay attention to the music, it helps so much with different moments as you saw not only with last and this episode, but also next episode.

Around 14:54 in this video or 10:08 in the episode as they pan the camera up Tanaka's leg you can see his adductor shaking from him reaching his limit. A small detail I only noticed because of watching your videos and starting to look for the little things Haikyuu does in each episode!

Tanaka's scene can be interpreted as either trust or threat. Trust that Kageyama puts in him and that he knows Tanaka's true abilities and threat that the pressure Kageyama gives to Tanaka as he trust him and so Tanaka feels the need to make sure that his trust was well worth it. It was also kinda stated by someone that when Kageyama said "We need your attacks" is similar to when Oikawa before every match would say to his team that he trusts them. Its like a threat that people need to live up to. So Kageyama is basically embodying his senpai's teachings and mannerisms despite how chaotic and spiteful their relationship is which I think is cool as people always tie Kageyama as Oikawa's student.

Just a casual reminder as I noticed it's still a source of confusion, which is OK by this point, the grey haired twin is the opposite and the yellow haired twin is the usual setter, which is the cause of the shock with the super quick being done in reverse, I think it's definitely something that can confuse people in the high tempo of the anime, but that's why their hair is different, maybe it's something you can remind yourself about before recording or have a reminder on or by you as you record, just so you won't get confused 😁

you always mention how the serve approaches have to many steps, but its often just from that angle, seemingly a reused animation template. Whenever its a front facing serve or a serve where we can see the proper form, it becomes the proper 3-4 steps

ynow hinata kicking the ball up can seem like a almost cop out moment but when you think about it, back in S1 in middle school one of his friends who he got to play volleyball with was a soccer player who he probally also played that sport with. so its nice that you can look back and see where he would have learned ball control with his legs like that
i also like where you can see Kita says Daichi probally could have put up the ball that Tsuki missed a spike on, back into the air and a few plays later Kita puts the ball up in the same exact situation when one of the twins misses the ball

I really love Kita's speech and his philosphy. He explains to his younger teammates that simplay calling someone a genius or just born talented is actually rude and discards all the hard work those people have done to realize this talent and bring it to the court. It also conflicts with Oikawa(k-pop)'s mentality that he just wasn't born with the talent others have and he can't do any better to reach those heights.

  • @KRonPire

    Yo Coach! Few interesting points:
    1. Tanaka underwent the 'Bokuto development' in one game. As Bokuto recited his story on how he began hitting line shots to Tsukki, he mentioned that his cross shots were constantly being blocked and eventually he took up hitting line shots to defeat that team. Tanaka underwent the same development - he started mimicking Bokuto's cross shots from the moment he first saw it in season 2 to finally using it in the current season and as his cross shots were being stopped, he shift to line shots eventually in the game! The way of the ace!
    2. Kita's narrative on genius is so profound that I have taken it up in my everyday life. As a copywriter and as a cyclist, I am bound to see people who are younger than me , being better than me. And that's okay. It took me Haikyuu- to understand that consistency really is underrated and if you can't be at par with a 'genius' you are allowed learn from them, respect them but not be jealous of them.

Kageyama's character development has been good but Hinata is my favourite character.
    Reason:
There has been a lot of characters like Hinata in the past who are energetic and hopeful. So much so that they feel bland and Cringy . But somehow Hinata character doesn't feel that way.
    He is just naturally lovable.
As manga reader I can say for sure that Hinata steals the spotlight after season 4.
