Are there actually people enforcing these bathroom-related laws? Do they pay cops to stand outside bathrooms and check birth certificates before anyone goes inside?
Were people supposed to carry their birth certificates with them if they might need to use a public bathroom?
But there is not really any 'identifying information' on a birth certificate.
Would they check my toe prints to be sure they matched my birth certificate?

As someone from North Carolina, I can tell you that the law isnt really enforced. And also, that was extremely offensive Calyx
William Dean It is true that there are still many good people in North Carolina, well at least there were when I vacationed there with family in the Smokies. I was treated with as much dignity as the next girl. Even my short stay in Georgia was surprisingly nice. Believe me, I was scared to death, but so many wonderful accepting southerners kept getting in the way of that fear :) But that was before the election.
Not all transgender people can pass for the other sex.
Obviously it's not a law intending to be enforced (because the enforcement is not really viable without sexual assault). The law's purpose is intimidation, xenophobia, propaganda, and discrimination. So it's actually undermining the legal process in the US to make a law that's not even intended to be enforced. Also, just saying I use any bathroom with no line, and I'm not trans. This is one of those rarer cases where maybe the energy should not be wasted on this legislation that's not even serving as legislation but instead focuses on community grassroots efforts like getting public schools to designate nongender bathrooms voluntarily.
When he told me to imagine an impeachment of a president, I got the most euphoric feeling I've ever had in several years.

Can someone explain what the issue is in North Carolina about the bathroom bill....I didn't quite get it, so which bathrooms are trans people allowed use in NC??
The whole NC "Bathroom Bill" (known as HB2) situation is deceptively complex, and one that can be a little difficult to navigate due to the metric-ton of partisan bullshit from both sides involved. The political spin is so heavy on this issue that I actually had trouble finding fair, non-biased sources for you to check out, but what I did settle on I'll link below. Lol I could type it all out myself, but I would have to write a book, so instead I'll supplement these sources with any other questions you might have. I'm not a lawyer, but I am a NC resident.
As for an answer to your specifc question, the bathroom section of HB2 only applies to multi-occupancy bath/changing/locker rooms on government-owned property (government agencies, schools, ect.) In those situations, people have to use the bath/changing/locker room designated to the sex listed on their birth certificate. It should also be noted that trans people in NC can have the sex listed on their birth certificate changed if they undergo sex reassignment surgery. Outside of those specific settings, the restroom laws haven't changed.
