A Black Mist Filter Will Add a Filmic Effect to Any Camera (Hidden Gems)
Welcome to the Hidden Gems series, where I uncover the best-kept secrets in filmmaking gear! In this episode, I explore how a black mist filter can add a stunning filmic effect to any camera.
Documentary-Style Footage with a Black Mist Filter
In this video, I showcase documentary-like footage captured with a super minimal BMPCC4K rig, highlighting the incredible results of using a black mist filter. The footage demonstrates the hazy and blooming light effects that this filter creates, making it a must-have tool for achieving a cinematic look.
Why Use a Black Mist Filter?
A black mist filter enhances your footage by adding a dreamy, filmic quality that can elevate any camera. While having a cinema camera like the BMPCC4K certainly helps, the black mist filter alone can significantly increase the filmic look of your videos by softening highlights and creating a beautiful, hazy glow around light sources.
Who Should Use a Black Mist Filter?
Whether you're a professional filmmaker or an enthusiastic hobbyist, a black mist filter is a hidden gem that can transform your footage. This filter is perfect for anyone looking to achieve a cinematic aesthetic without investing in high-end gear.

Thanks for the support!
Ay bro, just make sure to put your voice over audio to stereo instead of mono. Otherwise the audio is just coming from 1 side.
Got it thanks for the tip
Dawg you gotta at least convert to rec.709. Everything you say is overshadowed by the fact that you're showing off flat footage. Just hop in davinci and change the project settings (or apply rec 709 via a node) to color managed then make a few nodes to adjust tone/wb. Don't need anything super fancy to start, but you gotta at least try to bring out the color if you're gonna be making videos like this.
Thanks for the advice, yeah I've never done any color work before I got this black magic so I'm new to that but will get the hang of it
@@TOMMYBMP No worries man. You'll feel alot better when you start seeing your footage at its full capacity
@dangould882 I haven't minded the flat faded look because it caters to my style a bit but I definitely need to be able to bring those colors out more so I'll take your advice!
@@TOMMYBMP Check out Roy Anderson films. His style often leans toward a flatter look, but it ism't flat.
Take a shot every time he says "filmic"
I'm drunk
It Def has a cinema quality, but at the same time everything looks so dull.
I think that's more to do with my amateur color grading abilities but I'm improving day by day. I can make it less dull by adjusting the brightness curves but for this I was going for a vintage filmic look so I thought it was a nice touch

@@TOMMYBMP Man, I'm right there with you. Beginner BMPCC4K shooter here. Planning to have some stuff up soon. You've inspired me!
Have you forgotten to colour correct your log footage?
Lol no it is graded I'm just limited on davinci with my PC sometimes I have to throw on pro res and edit in capcut for now. I think these first few videos I simply didn't add enough contrast back in. Next ones will look better!
@@TOMMYBMP have you tried correcting it with the provided luts ? You can dial it back a bit later, with the key tool, if you like it a bit more washed out. I would also advise you to star picking your colours, once you manage to understand well that first stage of correction. By picking your colours, I mean enhancing a few colours to bring more attention to them. Some shoots I enhance my character skin tones, others I bring some more colour to their clothes.
If you need any help, feel free to ask.
@@CineGui I have a few luts now to use, and thanks for help! I'll get better with the colors just need to keep practicing
