As some one who was once like picard, kids make you feel SO JUDGED.
Its like, you can chalk up an adults judgments of you as "well he's an asshole".
But if a 6 year old looks at you and goes "i dont like you"
it feels like god himself just told you that you aren't a good person. Their judgment is just TOO PURE and BASIC.

There is a hilarious skit on I Think You Should Leave that touches exactly that

      As a parent, don't take a 6 year old's judgement too harshly.
To be blunt: small children aren't terribly bright and often have no manners -- they can be little monsters. 😅

I find giving them the Gowron stare and saying, "if you were any other man, I would kill you where you stand" usually gets them to back off

Picard - "I hate kids yet starfleet gave me a ship with children"
Starfleet - "Give him a ship with kids. The biggest ship we have, the only one with kids on board, and schools, and PTA meetings, and let them run about the ship and throw holographic but somehow wet snowballs upside his face, give him that ship, and make the teachers have a captain Picard day every year without fail. And also give him that android who looks in his 30's but is actually a teenager. And remember his friend jack who died? Put his ex wife and child on the ship, and make her the chief medical officer so he can't avoid her".

That's what happens if you refuse to be promoted to admiral. They make being a captain unbearable.

and to think this is almost immediately after he was like "Commander Riker, you're going to manually attach the saucer and drive sections. that's not a problem, is it? good. now get the fck away from me" and now he's all like "I need your help, I hate children."

I believe part of the concern is that the Enterprise had a large civilian population, which was different than his previous ships.

maybe that's what the writers were intending to show when they wrote this scene

That part of the storyline proves the point that there was some odd writing in the first couple seasons especially.

Having kids on the ship was just stupid. I can see the civilian science people and such. But that ship was in danger every other week and that saucer stayed on that bitch the whole time save once.

    • @TheRealNormanBates

I think it was addressing the Enterprise (no letter) on a "5 year mission". If the crew had a family, and you have near godlike powers (antimatter powered weaponry, warp drive, transporters, etc) it would make sense from an optimistic, benevolent society to think it would be a good idea that the families of the crew went on the voyage with them.
Speaking of which, wouldn't have been cool if instead of destroying the ships at Wolf 359 the Borg cube would launch pieces of itself to ram and melt into the ships, and Borgerize the ships? And then later you see Borg kids, since they assimilate all the families onboard the larger starships?

There was another time in The Arsenal of Freedom episode in season 1. It's the only episode aside from the pilot where the original idea for why and how they separate is obeyed. Geordie ends up in command trying to rescue Picard, Data, Riker ect from the planet

I still wonder how he made it to the captaincy without people skills. He has no patience or sense of humor, is often rude to his subordinates, never apologizes but gets away with it because after all, he is the captain.

I don’t know the whole world of the behind the scenes of tng, but since this is the first season, and Gene Rodenberry said he sees himself in Wesley Crusher, and we know how much influence he had on the first season, I would take a guess and say picard’s dislike of children and specifically this scene was definitely something inserted or at least promoted by him for some sort of conflict, something that would attract more exposure of wesely and picard’s relationship. But that’s just me lol

In that generation, not being good with kids was sometimes seen as manly and professional. Like, it was a sign of how serious and professional you were that you just couldn't relate to kids and their unserious ways. That was woman's work. It never made sense in a society that was supposedly without gender norms.

It is always amazed me how people who watched Star Trek picked apart the social dynamic of the show rather than the tech. Science fiction to me was possibilities of what if for technology not if Picard was a wired human being. But to watch their own .
