The reason for the floor around the ufo not being damaging is a bit complicated. Its to do with the way sectors change their properties using linedef triggers. Using the standard trigger for lowering floors, it takes the new properties from the adjacent sector it is moving down to. But the floor around the ufo has to rise and change. I had to use a special boom trigger for that, which takes its properties from the sector the trigger is on, and because the trigger is on a voodoo doll conveyor belt i couldn't make it damaging or it would hurt the voodoo doll and the player. There is probably a workaround for that, but i probably figured who cares. It was only ever damaging for cinematic purposes anyway. The other bit of floor that shouldn't be damaging is a mistake though. Regarding the difficulty of these maps, its easy to forget that this game has a pretty high skill ceiling. I got my brother to have a go at this wad once. He plays a lot of fps games and he got absolutley murdered on the first map, just because he wasn't familiar with old-school doom. I've seen skilled players breeze through these maps, and average players get hammered. Thats what makes doom so great, it gives you the tools to enjoy it no matter what. Too hard? Use saves. Too easy? Go rambo. Speedrun it. Everyone will be different though, and the skill differences can be huge, so don't feel like you are missing out by playing on lower settings if its kicking your arse. There are still plenty of monsters to kill
Just make a lowered portion in the voodoo doll room, say 16px long, with the trigger in it. The voodoo doll will hover over it and trigger the line below.
This map has a great build up. The first couple minutes really feel tense and ominous, especially with so many weapons and powerups available right from the start. You just know something horrible is going to happen when you detonate those barrels.
My god, you just wrecked this map without trying too hard. This level is considered quite hard for most doom players. Other playthroughs I've seen people really struggle with this one. Decino is just a doomgod I suppose.

Watching your vids and streams, I think one of your strongest points is your sense of direction and the fact you’re pretty quick at knowing a map when you’re playing it the first time. Man, that takes me a bit more time
There's a cool level- and narrative-desing (lol, narrative in a Doom game) in this map: the exit is obviously an alien ship, somehow buried in a cave under tons of dirt and stone, but unlike good old elevator it doesn't goes down - it takes you beyond... It takes you to 200 Megahurts. I'm super excited to see next Going Down episode.

I mean, it's difficult if you panic and make a mistake or get fool-hardy. Like what happened in the previous map when he got ambushed by an Archy and chaingunners so he ran straight into a Revenant deathpit. Cyriack is great at creating this kind of tension by having monsters appear seemingly from all sides, having your cover disappear over time (as if your cover was getting destroyed by enemy projectiles in real life). Also Decino almost died on this map when he ate a Cyberdemon rocket trying to cheekily BFG them from the top ledge. I'm not denying or trying to lessen his skill, but luck also does come into play on these runs. Also also it's a question of skill level. Decino is a very good player and he makes things look almost easy. The average player will have a hard time because they don't have the same amount of practice/muscle memory. Tl;dr - it's all relative :)

These maps aren't easy at all, decino is just way too good at Doom :) Honestly though, a likely reason you're getting so many "MAPXX is where it gets really difficult" comments is just that Going Down has a very gradual difficulty curve, and where players run into a personal difficulty wall can vary quite a lot. I would personally say only maps 27 and 28 really challenge me, but even then, they're not AS difficult as, say, the final episode of a WAD like Speed of Doom or Alien Vendetta. Even as Cyriak smothers you in monsters, he is also pretty generous with health items and powerups, especially if you can find the secrets. That said, difficulty isn't everything, and as satisfying as I bet it was to overcome a map like Sunlust MAP30, I bet it was also equally frustrating to play at times. Going Down's biggest strength is not its difficulty, but its creativity. You don't need to get your teeth kicked in to have fun in Doom. Looking forward to the next videos in this series!
For me, it got hard starting MAP08, so, yeah. I just played (literally 5 minutes ago) Buried Alive on HMP, and I was overwhelmed by it, even using saves, that when I beat I was *certain* no one could beat this saveless on UV on a blind run. But I still love Going Down: it's not the difficulty, it's the creativity, just like you said.
"As they lower me down into that hole in the ground I scream out for help but they hear not a sound I tear at the lid, my fingers they bleed Is this happening to me or is it just a dream?" (From the song Buried Alive by Venom, featured in the 1982 album Black Metal) BTW, the next map is bizarre even by Going Down standards. You'll see.
Absolutely in love with Venom and I think they really fit Doom. I could really see an Okuplok style map with a MIDI version of At War With Satan as soundtrack, just saying.
This map was fun to watch! When we saw the teleporters, I immediately thought that this might become an arena map where you're supposed to use the teleporters to go around evading the masses of enemies. It was only partially true but that may be because decino doomgod made it look so relatively controlled and manageable
Man, decino is a god. I really like this map, lots of fun. Also, man, thanks for these videos. I've been through one of the worse mental episodes of my life right now. Thanks for being here, keep up the good work.
When I saw all the demons spawn in, I thought it was going to be another death. That breakable wall in the beginning was a neat touch. So was the UFO/elevator. At least it looked like a UFO to me lol
This is the map I was itching to see your reaction to the most. Very impressed you cleared in blind in one go. Believe it or not, this map is actually harder on Hurt Me Plenty, because there are no Cyberdemons to help you out with infighting. the "teleporter" at the end of the map is supposed to be a UFO btw. The next map isn't "hard" per se, but your jaw will drop to the floor for different reasons. Considering you're a Serious Sam fan, I think you'll appreciate the pure spectacle of it.
I just beaten the map on HMP and there are 2 Cyberdemons roaming around in the lava pit. It lacks the one on the top of the alien spaceship tho (there are two respawning Arachnotrons instead)

Probably what happened was you accidentally found the intended quiet spot of the level early in the fight, where one is meant to strategically play the map from.
I think different people struggle on different parts of doom, some find maps loke this overvhelming, but for decino big map with all the weapons is where he is most comfortable. He understand what enemy to prioritize and what weapon is most effective, and he has infighting on his side, i guess that what playing sunlust does to people. It's really cool way to bring your level game mechnic into visual design.
This map is obviously very hard. But decino is very good at managing to spot where monsters cannot follow. Which immediately reduces the panic running ambush tendency, as well as avoiding getting pinned or trapped. For most people, chance is pretty good that they take a rocket or two from a cyberdemon while they are getting worn down and pinned in by the barons and cacos. Add in the chance of not being able to get to the pain elemental or archvile without risking more damage and...yeah, this is a good map. This is indeed a pretty easy level in my opinion. As long as you stay in the center the only thing that is really dangerous are the Revenants on the edges and later the Arachnotrons , who are very easy to quickly rocket. Everything that spawns in the center is simple to defeat as long as you aren't pinged by the enemies on the ledges outside the center, and the hell knights will take care of the cyberdemons. The level is also quite generous with health (which is something I appreciate about going down, most hard levels have a good amount of health and armor). I'm surprised someone would say this level is a difficulty spike, maybe they meant level 19. Still a very cool and memorable level.
I had to play through this wad on HNTR to warm up, and it still kicked my butt plenty of times. cyriak is rather skilled at sabotaging obvious camp points, and the unstable cave theme gave the collapsing walls a clean cover.
this map is a little breather before not necessarily in the next but definitely in map 20 really gets down to business again. So a short time to relax for you decino.😉
Good god, this map was so hard for me. I didn't know you could camp the middle like that, I thought demons converged on you no matter where you were. There in lies my mistake. You made me look a fool haha.
I think decino's two deaths in map 12 and the one in 17 were down to him getting careless. I reckon if he's aware of the next level's layout and gimmick, he won't die there.
Another map well handled! If you didnt have your streak already ended, my bet would have been, that next map would have ended it. Funnily enough I would call map 19 actually very easy, if you know what to do, but its easy to panic and completely screw it up. Also 3:23 for funny decino noise.
Excellent gameplay. I really hope the comments about the wads difficulty haven't gotten your expectations too high. It's more "difficult compared to Plutonia" and less "difficult like a Ribbiks wad."
I'm not surprised you are doing well. You know how to camp, prioritize weapons and get the enemies to infight. People are saying it's hard because it is. That said, you make it look way *too* easy. Either I'm bad or Zagemod Alpha Guy UV Fast is actually a much higher difficulty mode than I give it credit for cause I've died at least a half dozen times on all of these maps, and a handful I've just said screw it and done quick saves through. Either way, both things are true: the maps are hard and you are good.
Wow you got the winning strat without practice, only by instinct. yep securing the elevator cliff, and clear all those sniping skeleton and the cacodemon are key to victory. Once the bfg drop and all the cybie are in the baron horde the map is won. Still really nice to complete this one first try. I am not sure which map will kill you now.
The reason for the floor around the ufo not being damaging is a bit complicated. Its to do with the way sectors change their properties using linedef triggers. I left this megawad around MAP21 or 22 and I can't wait for you to get there and be awesome
I had to play through this wad on HNTR to warm up, and it still kicked my butt plenty of times. cyriak is rather skilled at sabotaging obvious camp points, and the unstable cave theme gave the collapsing walls a clean cover.
You have now entered the alien spaceship. A world of hurts awaits you.
going sleep? heck no, going down!
I'm so looking forward to the next map
1:20 Ancient Aliens confirmed! 👽
Another excellent level from Cyriak! The amount of infighting was cool, would be interesting to see a pacifist run sometime 👀
Cyriak placing armour bonuses: I can make Decino go where ever I please.
Makes it look so easy, well played
this map is a little breather before not necessarily in the next but definitely in map 20 really gets down to business again. So a short time to relax for you decino.😉
its very satisfying to see all 3 counters being at 100%, especially with resurrected monster kills sometimes pumping up the kill% above 100
Good god, this map was so hard for me. I didn't know you could camp the middle like that, I thought demons converged on you no matter where you were. There in lies my mistake. You made me look a fool haha.
Such amazing wad
Cyriak was warming up for 50 Shades of Graytall.
Damn, those map titles sounds like fun is going to happen - last time Rest in Pieces, this time Buried Alive.
Excellent gameplay. I really hope the comments about the wads difficulty haven't gotten your expectations too high. It's more "difficult compared to Plutonia" and less "difficult like a Ribbiks wad."
Oh, the horrors that await in the next one...
Words alone cannot adequately express how hyped I am for the next level.
Also decino: "That wasn't that bad."
I remember beating this level my first playthrough and thinking it wasn't too bad, but I died a few times when I played it again a few years later.
Burnt by solid rock. Chills on lava. Doomguy goes on the weirdest vacations.
7:45 what my lawyer told me 6 months before I was sentenced to 18 years in prison for felony tax evasion
"I'm just going to follow the bonuses".
*serious sam ptsd*
Wow you got the winning strat without practice, only by instinct. yep securing the elevator cliff, and clear all those sniping skeleton and the cacodemon are key to victory. Once the bfg drop and all the cybie are in the baron horde the map is won. Still really nice to complete this one first try. I am not sure which map will kill you now.
I think people die a lot in this map because they run around at the start instead of camping in the safe spot. That's what I did anyway haha.
