Did the serpentine belt on your car or truck just break on your way home? Should you keep driving? Can you use something in its place just to get home? Should you try that? In this video, Andy demonstrates how important a serpentine belt is, and why you shouldn't drive without one, or try to replace it with household objects.

My quess would be strapping that you'd buy at a fabric store, or online.
It's very strong, it can stretch, and can be cut to whatever length you'd need.

Instead of going thru all this just carry an extra belt. Also a gallon jug of 50 50 coolant. And a small tool box of basic tools especially a wrench that will fit your tensioner pulley usually 19mm works great.

I broke a hose clamp, upper radiator hose on a 69 Camaro, and used strapping tape to booger a fix together. The key was keeping the sticky side out. Was able to really cinch it down that way. Made it 30 miles to the farm. I think strapping tape might be a good option here. Or duct tape sticky side out.

I'm not going to try this at home. I'm going to try it by the side of the road. lol
I was actually thinking why not use the broken drive belt? Cut the belt to length if you don't want to include the ac pump, etc. Drill 3 holes at the end of each belt. Don't put the holes too close to the edge. You will risk tear-out. Then feed solid wire or zip ties through the holes and tighten the belt up.
I need to move my truck around my yard. Out of the way until I can fix it. I'm not going far. So I only want the power steering pump to work. My truck is super hard to steer manually.
    Great video. Thanks

Gosh i am so stupid my serpentine belt was splitting so I called a mobile mechanic off Craigslist they stop by AutoZone picked up a new belt for $20 I paid him $50 to replace it and drove home and watch this video and again how stupid am I I could have used my shoelaces and duct tape and the worst thing that would have happened is the belts would have broke and I would have drove off a cliff with no power steering and no power to the engine and then if I would have lived through it climb back up the cliff and walk home and it would have "cost me nothing "I would have saved so much money if I had watch this video instead of paying 50 to $70 to have somebody drive out to to replace my belt in 15 minutes I'm glad you're a Certified mechanic representing A-1 Auto and saving everybody mony

Yea its not a repair but in a pinch it could get you home and save you a tow fee. Think Im gonna have to get some good straps and rubber bands for my brothers explorer. I'd recommend the best quality you can find cause the cheap ones dont hold up long.

Drove with no water pump and steering pump 1,4k miles back home. Luckily the alternator was on the different drive train, not connected to the main serpentine belt. That video won't help me since the belt failure was a biproduct of the seized puller but great video overall, gives good ideas how to survive if just belt is the issue. Thank you!

It is an old motorcycle trickfrom the early day of belt drives,.
Cut a piece off the old belt and sew it into the broken belt.
Or if you change belts on a schedule keep the last belt in your trunk that way you have a spare to get you home.

Why did you not wrap any of your fixes around the tensioner pulley? That way it forces the potential fix against the water pump pulley. That is what I would have done.
    James Bolin

    • @kd5nrh
      @kd5nrh 3 роки тому +1

If using something without enough length, I could see skipping the tensioner, but yeah, the rope definitely should have gone around it.
Of course, for most vehicles, you can buy the cheapest available serp for $20 or less, (mine was $12) and anything that fits right beats the hell out of improvising, so not carrying a spare just doesn't make sense.
And then there's the other question: who's going to have all that crap in the car when the belt breaks?
Uhh...besides me, I mean. I think I actually do have all those things in the trunk, but they're right next to my spare belt.

Fortunately , there was a guy who stopped to help, found a "ROPE" , cut it to fit, re-wove it to fit, (understand it just had to go from the crank to the alternator). The guy did this for me, I don't know how to weave, (like braiding a womans hair), and it lasted some 20 miles, until we could get back towards Mexicalli,,,, from : San Felipe, B.C.Norte....... it really worked! It's better if you measure it with paracord then make one out of duct tape with a paracord core, can get you over 900 miles if you split a paracord and run the fibers thru the duct tape flush. Cut the belt, measure it with a line of duct tape, cut the strings out of the paracord and run them with a double pass around one half of the duct tape, then fold the duct tape over it, add an extra two layers of duct tape.
