I am very interested in grafting. I took some serious botany classes awhile back at our local JC, but never did any. Species I'd like to try would be sour cherry and pears.

I will say, I've not had the best experience with combination fruit trees. We got 2 4-way trees from a nursery about 7 years ago. Don't get me wrong, they produce 4 different apples and the fruit quality is great. The problem is that on both trees there's one dominant variety that has become 50% of the total mass of the tree, with the other three species splitting the other 50%. When they were small we tried to pull the dominant variety down with ropes and trim it back to keep it even, but eventually gave up. We decided we'd try and clone the over varieties into their own trees and just let the 4 ways trees be single variety trees.
I think multi variety trees are only useful if you have a small space where you can't have a tree for each variety. Perhaps with aggressive pruning every year they could be kept in check, but I feel like ours would still have ended up with one variety in the middle stealing more than it's share of energy. I suspect that any combination of varieties would end up with a dominant, but in our case Granny Smith (and the other which I can't quite remember) is the culprit

Often the choice of cultivars grafted does make a big difference. The ideal would be to have many individual trees but in small spaces a multi type fruit tree can ensure pollination and provide variety 🌻🍁

Haven't tried this yet, but from what I am reading/watching, if you prune back further on the dominant varieties, the others will have a much better chance to balance it out. The tree will put much more of its growth hormone into the tallest points it has. I guess evolution always in competition, favors height, even when we don't want to get a ladder! LOL.

It’s scion like science, not sky. Sigh-on
