    VICE News sent Suroosh Alvi to Mexico to see the effects of cartel oil theft firsthand.
    In Part 2 we tour Pemex's fragile operations in the Burgos Basin, and sit down with a member of the infamous Los Zetas cartel.
    Mexico’s notoriously violent drug cartels are diversifying. Besides trafficking narcotics, extorting businesses, and brutally murdering their rivals, cartels are now at work exploiting their country’s precious number one export: oil.
    Every day as many as 10,000 barrels of crude oil are stolen from Mexico’s state-run oil company, Pemex, through precarious illegal taps, which are prone to deadly accidents. Pemex estimates that it loses $5 billion annually in stolen oil, some of which ends up being sold over the border in US gas stations. As police fight the thieves, and the cartels fight each other, the number of victims caught in the battle for the pipelines continues to climb.

Unfortunately that happens always with cops there they wont let you go until you give them a bribe (money)and they let you go and yes cops are mostly working with cartels but the real problem is the goverment the whole systems are corrupt...and unfortunately your bro and friends got stopped by some corrupt cops ...but thats what ruins the country it makes tourism bad for others ..but most parts are good but also im saying the culture and things

    Will legalizing drugs stop things such as this? I often wonder if drug legalization will stop massive gangs like this. They know there's people that wanna legalize drugs and they know their profits will sink if they do become legal. They're businessmen through and through, they will find more ways to get money. Drugs will take a huge amount of their cash away but would it change anything?

    • @nehuatlchango5077
      @nehuatlchango5077 10 років тому

      No, it won't stop them. Legalizing things won't do a damn thing except drive criminals to do more risky things for profit. Mind you, Zetas are stealing gas and Los Caballeros Templarios are stealing Iron Ore. When some drug profit went down, a lot of cartels began kidnapping people and selling for ransom. Usually the hostage would be killed regardless. Also they resorted to human trafficking and when they got the money, they'd leave the people to die. Drugs are just one branch of the illegal tree cartels have. Like someone said (I can't remember who) "Do you honestly think that if drugs are legalized, they will just give up and get honest jobs?" It's a sad thing for the people who live in fear. Mind you, not all Mexicans are like this. My parents taught me to be a hard-worker and to be respectful. Many Mexicans live in fear of being targets for no reason and having their family killed. As pessimistic as this sounds, I don't see an end to this any time soon.

      Yes it WILL hurt the criminal organizations 100%, anyone with any understand of history or economics knows that. Legalizing Alcohol is what broke the back of Al Capone's mafia.

    • @egyptianspaceodin1373
      @egyptianspaceodin1373 10 років тому

      Rose BPOS Yeah, it'll hurt them... but will it STOP them. Zetas aren't Al Capone. Far from it. And look at their new source of income.

      When you fail to pay your Spec-Ops for over a year and they defect and then become a Spec-Ops-Cartel I doubt there is much that can stop them completely. The Mexican government created a worse monster than terrorism when they screwed over their special forces.

      Ne'huatl Chango
      the first question should bot be will it stop them
      the first question should be will it make them get out of the drug trade
      the answer is yes
      once they are out of the drug trade then the authorities will have to move on to the next illegal activity they are involved in
      then the traditional police techniques might work: investigating, gathering a list of names and infiltrating the organizations to get information about their next move
      these don't work in the war on drugs because the black market never goes away no matter what anyone does

    not too many people come to realize what politically is going on in mexico. the last time i was down in mexico was last summer and for some reason a city ran out of gas for four days makes a person wonder wtf is going on. people just think the cartel are bad people who move drugs and kill people, which yes does make them bad. but the fact being that the cartel are interrupting an oil monopoly in mexico that they had to break it down into factions that has been controlled by the Government for decades. thats some serious extra heat they didnt want.
