I acquired clay pipes with the intention of using them as ollas for garden container beds so when I put water , it leaks slowly out of the clay pipe. But the coating on it is preventing this from happening? Any idea what type of coating is used and how to take them off the clay? Thank you.
Ollas and clay pipes are not the same type of ceramic. Ollas are fired at a low enough temperature that they maintain porosity (like terracotta pots), while clay pipe is fired at a high enough temperature that it begins to form a continuous glassy phase that makes the ceramic nonporous (like stoneware or high-quality bricks). It's not a coating per se, but an intrinsic part of the ceramic itself. The glassy phase is why they're sometimes specifically called 'vitrified clay pipes'.
Finally you showed me Ken. How many times you practice that?
Super sir
