Great video Austin. Nice shot of the deer crossing the tracks. Nice visuals of the stack colors and audio of the stack music. Our local tourist railway is converting their No. 618 steam engine, 1907 Baldwin 2-8-0, from coal to reclaimed auto oil during the mandated rebuild. Folks riding here behind steam for the first time will not have the olfactory pleasure of smelling coal smoke. I am fortunate that I was born early enough in the 20th century to ride behind steam passenger revenue service.
@@zebrashark23 hate to burst your coal burning bubble but 489 is only the testbed for oil firing on the C&TS to see if it even works just as good or better than coal
The Durango & Silverton uses K-36's just like these, but does anybody else notice that the whistles on these locomotives are much deeper and more bellowing than the haunting wail of the D&S K-36's whistles?
Thank you. This is by far my favorite place to visit and should be on every train fan's list of destinations. Something about it sets it apart from the D&S and almost every other tourist line
I've got no idea. It was put on to replace its normal one after a failure and once the normal one was fixed it has stayed on the engine since then. There's an agreement with the railroad and the whistle owner that its current whistle is to stay on the engine at all times with very limited exceptions
Love the doubled header.

Man 484's whistle is beautiful! Thanks for posting!

484 had a terrible old whistle, and they replaced it

Anybody else notice how 489's whistle almost has a snarling quality to it? I like it. Makes it sound like a much larger locomotive.
Man, I loved the 489. Now they completely fucked it up and turned it into an oil burner. I hope they don't do that to any others.

LoL this was posted a month before I went here for my birthday
What whistle is 484 wearing? It should definitely be permanent

@@AustinGoodwin1 i think it was some kind of 6 chime im not sure of it ik for a fact 489 has a AT&SF 6 chime
Maybe a Crosby or Powell 3 chime.
I wanna say B&O 3 Chime
I think its a Crosby, Definitely not a powell, 489 Wore a Powell 3 chime sporadically throughout the late 80's and 90's and even the early 2000's
Just wait if the D&S and the C&TS were joined together.
They were at one point, but the mainline from Chama to Durango was torn up in the 70's.
