  • In the past, steam locomotives previously relied on Coal.. this once was the main fuel source for thousands of steam locomotives in the United States. Now it’s becoming more rare to see a coal fired engine. On our trip to the Cumbres & Toltec, we had the opportunity to watch two coal fired K-36 locomotives work together up to Cumbres pass!
Sit back and enjoy some steam action as they charge up to Cumbres Pass on this beautiful fall morning!
    Steam locomotive information:
Number 488 & 484 built in 1925 by the Baldwin Locomotive works, the K-36 is a 2-8-2 Mikado. With a total of 10 built- 9 still are in existence, 4 are at the Durango & Silverton & the remaining 5 are at Cumbres & Toltec.
They were retired between 1962-1968, but the engines didn’t have a long retirement. They soon were hauling passengers on the old Rio Grande line from Chama to Anantio.
