Rise of Kara Mustafa in Ukraine (Ottoman Empire vs Tsardom of Moscow)

  • The Muscovite and Ukrainian Cossack forces under the command of Hetman Samoilovich and Prince Grigory Romodanovsky besieged Chyhyryn and forced Hetman Doroshenko (ottoman vassal) to surrender in 1676. Doroshenko then exiled to Central Russia as Voivode of the Muscovite.
The Ottoman Sultan Mehmed IV appointed Yuri Khmelnitsky, son of legendary Cossack Bohdan Khmelnytsky, as hetman of Right-bank Ukraine. In July 1677, the sultan ordered his army under the command of Ibrahim Pasha to advance towards Chyhyryn, retake the city as seat of the Cossack hetmanate. But the campaign was a disaster, with Ottoman forces failed to capture the city and lost almost half of the army against smaller cossack-muscovite forces.
In July 1678, newly appointed Grand Vizier Kara Mustafa personally led larger Ottoman forces complimented with the Crimean Tatar army besieged Chyhyryn once again.
Samoilovich and Romodanovsky was defeated and fled across the Dnieper river to the Moscovite controlled Left-Bank Ukraine. The city was successfully taken but due to heavy fighting the city was reduced to rubble. Hetman Yuri Khmelnitskythen moved the Right Bank Cossack capital to Nemyriv, close to the ottoman province of Podolia.

De la Croix (Secretary of the French Embassy) pointed out that the Turkish units that returned from the campaign "seemed more like the remnants of the army after the bloody defeat, rather than a victorious army." The participants in the battles confessed to him that never before had victory cost them so much, never before had they met such a stubborn and strong opponent. They were especially impressed by the courage and bravery of the Ukrainian Cossacks, who, having lost one arm, fought another one to the death. In those battles, the Vizier sustained losses (dead) about 30,000 personnel of his army.
The captured janissary Mustafa Madanov said during the interrogation: "And they were killed in this war out of 20 thousands, and nowhere so many Turks have never died in wars before".

No, defeat at Vienna was mostly his own PERSONAL fault, not listening to Swedish King's and Crimean Khan's council, refusing to send cannon and riflemen for Crimean Khan's troop, openly insulting the Khan and causing Crimeans to retreat without a fight so Ottoman army gets attacked from 2 sides, refusing to lift the siege despite some of his army is fighting an outside force... He was dumb as fuck and did a lot of stupid personal mistakes because of his gloated ego. A lot of better men before him recieved that punishment for much less.

If the Ottomans had not been busy with a civil war against the Timurid dynasty, the whole of Europe would have been under the Ottoman flag.
It is quite sad that the Ottomans behaved very selfishly in the 14th century. Peace and permission were granted to conquer Eastern Europe, but the Ottomans canceled their natural spread to Europe and returned to fight against the Timurid dynasty, who were also Muslim brothers and desired sole rule. This led to the most devastating war in Muslim history. Thousands of elephants from India were used by the Timurids to crush the Ottomans, resulting in the deaths of 40,000 Ottoman soldiers. The Ottomans were declared defeated after their leader was killed by the Timurids.

Nawet sami Turcy go darzą szacunkiem. Takiego ataku nawet my nie mogliśmy powstrzymać.

German historian and pioneer ethnologist (who worked in Russian Empire), made a copy of Bohdan Khmelnytsky's Universal:
"Bohdan Khmelnytskyi - the Hetman of both sides of the Dnieper and the Zaporozhian Host (Army/Troops). To the Pans (feodal lords, landlords), General Starshyna (general officer staff), Colonels, Polkova Starshyna (regimental sergeant-major), Sotniks (certain captain), Otamans, and Plebs of the entire Ukrainian army and people of every condition (status?) ....Their proud aspiration to the blood of Christians to the end were tamed, and their growling maw on the crown of Poland and on the pious Ukrainian people was closed, and the entrance to Poland and Ukraine was blocked..... but from the whole Zaporozhian Host and Ukrainian on both sides of the Dnieper, which is far expanding, we are given the might and power both in the Host and in all cities and all Ukrainian peoples to manage..."

@@jailedtwice735 1) Miller wrote not about Ukraine but about Little Russia (Malorossia) and the Zaporozhian Sich 2. Ukraine at that time was not the name of the state. This word meant the outskirts or borderlands. It was an outlaw territory, where people from Russia, the Crimean Khanate and the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth flocked and these people were called Cossacks. Then there was neither Ukraine nor Ukrainians.

What outskirt, borderland? On what language? I guess on yours, Russian. But you must use language of local people. Thus, Ukraine will be U (pronouncing like oo) + kraina (means country) = Inner country. In Pamvo Berynda's The Slovene - Russian Lexicon, Church Slavonic (we can say Bulgarian) word "Strana" (Country) as Povet, Storona, Kraina. @@jailedtwice735 1. Gerhard Friedrich Müller - was a Russian historian of German origin who lived and worked in Russia. And in Russia he is called both Muller and Miller. 2. His essay was called "Historical writings about Little Russia and Little Russians" and there he does not call the inhabitants of Zaporozhye Ukrainians, but Little Russians. 3. The fact that the name Ukraine comes from the word Kraina is nonsense invented by modern Ukrainian state propaganda. First of all, the territory of the Zaporozhian Sich was not a country, it was a border zone of three states: the Russian Kingdom, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Ottoman Empire, and this territory was sometimes called the outskirts, which sounded like "ukrAina" in Old Russian language and "kraniec" in Polish. And the Ukrainian language did not exist then. Secondly, where have you seen a country with the name "Country"? And why they addeed the letter U to the word "country"? It does not make sense

Because, suffered heavy losses. They were especially impressed by the courage and bravery of the Ukrainian Cossacks, who, having lost one arm, fought
the second one to the death. In those battles, the Vizier sustained losses about 30,000 personnel of his army.
The captured janissary Mustafa Madanov said during the interrogation: "And they were killed in this war out of 20 thousands, and nowhere so many Turks have never died in wars before"
