Same here. When you have no chance of working a 9-5 or any hours on a schedule as you can’t even sometimes make it to your own birthdays, it’s definitely very difficult to find something to do to be able to support yourself. At least in my experience. I worry about my turn around time answering questions and fielding offers (I’m starting a vintage store and also a skincare one, probably on ebay to start) and shipping right away. Also, shipping time and just shipping in general. And that I forget half the things that happen daily so i have to write every order down as soon as i see it… It’s nerve wracking. When I first got sick I had been working 10 years and had never been let go first any reason. Losing 3 jobs in 2 months really showed me that there was a new boss of me and it wasn’t my self determination (despite what some like to think). So yeh, I commiserate.

thanks for this insane 1 hour long video of you explaining your small business from A to Z. Meanwhile i'm listening to this because i'm taking a break from creating products (eating korean spicy ramen atm). you go girl! i had to subscribe because you gave me a vibe as if you're a friend sharing your experiences with me. i love it
I don't think I'm gonna open my own art shop but I admire your kindness. all that effort to help your fellow artists very inspiring. Spread more love everyone❤❤❤
Big thank you! You can't imagine how helpful this video is. It's giving me hope that I can do it, because this autistic brain of mine feels overwhelmed easily when there's no organized step-by-step instructions, and so far I haven't been able to find something like this on this platform. And I like your seasonal approach :) Never thought about it Thanks again!
For context (not intending to brag about my credentials) I have two bachelors degrees, and an MFA in Integrated Visual arts. I’ve been researching how to establish an art for commerce space for several years. There are countless videos, tutorials, workshops, ebooks, etc. all of which (that I’ve encountered anyway) have vague directions and superficial advice on how to do this effectively. This is the first video I’ve seen providing a truly transparent, exquisitely detailed description of how to do this effectively. Truly, thank you so so much for this informative video. Instant follow, instant fan, I greatly appreciate your work, insight and honest explanation regarding artist small business! ❤️🔥💯🥹
omg🥹🥹 this made me grin so hard thank you so much for your kind words!!🙏🫶 I’m so grateful that sharing my silly lil experience can be so helpful to everyone on here❤️ rooting for you & your shop!
I just subscribed and I'm looking to open my own little shop someday but can I just say your an amazing person for doing a video like this! it's an overwhelming thought to open a shop due to all of the unknowns and you have at the very least given people a lifeline to begin researching the things they need. I don't feel as lost on this journey. keep being awesome!
Im not even a painter but somehow watching talk about the way you planned thia and the way you're breaking it down as a clear strategy with details makes one just wanna keep watching. Your artwork is beautiful, keep it up
I wish I could like this video a thousand times. THIS is the info artists need when starting a business! Not a list of design programs and websites to host your shop. So much valuable information here thanks for this!
I am in shock. This video is so flippin amazing… the info you give is insanely helpful and informative, you explain everything perfectly, and you even included your notes to refer to! Thank you times a million. I’m hoping to finally sell my art and open up a shop after years and years of contemplation. This helped me immensely. Thank you so much 🙏
Thank you so much for referencing the third party ink you use for your Pixma pro-100 printer! I got this printer and did SOOO much research about it before hand and was planning to do exactly what you're doing of using precision colors for the ink replacements. Most of the forums and advice on this printer is like seven years old with some mixed reviews so it was refreshing to see a newer video mentioning this printer. I also have a background in graphic design and would like to open a small business in the future as well :D
omg I’m glad it helped!!! yeah the refilling is a bit of a process (esp the first time when you have to set up the new cartridges) but the youtube videos they have on their tutorial page are really informative and the colours look amazing🫰 best of luck with your shop!!
Wow, thank you so much for this incredible insight! It is also amazing for all the clients to see that this is in fact a very labor intensive process and is not just "I am selling my drawings on-line" as is perceived by many. It requires many steps and resources to set up and successfully run. I wish you all the best :)
Wow, thank you for this amazing video. I'm in the process of launching my own art sticker/print shop and I've watched hundreds of videos for resource but this has got to be the most clear, organized and informative one I've seen on UA-cam.
This is an incredible resource for someone like me who is finally starting to open my own art store. Thank you so very much for this video, it has helped me more than you will ever know! ❤
i've been in the deepest rabbit hole and have watched so much while starting my shop and this is by far the best video. THANK YOU! your art is awesome too :)
I’ve been contemplating creating my own online shop for a while but I was lost and now because I have found you I feel so assured and ready to try my best !!
You're so organized and articulate! Thank you for sharing all of your process and being so transparent. The foundation of any business is getting the accounting correct, and I'm glad you've spent a long time explaining in simple english what you need to be prepared for BEFORE you unexpectedly get hit with that 30% income tax bill at the end of the year (ha ha ha). Your art is lovely and I hope your business continues to flourish! CRA in Canada) = IRS in USA or Uncle Sam, casually :)
Thank you for making such a detailed video with all the steps you took. It's so helpful and I love the transparency of where you started and why you made certain choices.
Thank you so much for making this video. This was very informative and eased my anxieties about hopefully starting my own shop someday this year. You speak so clearly and confidently. And now I have to jump off that deep end and get going
I’m so glad you found it helpful! It’s such a huge intimidating process to think about but once you get going it’s kinda just like one foot in front of the other - you got this!!💪🙏
This video is exactly what I needed!!! Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us!🙏 Your bullet points and the way that you explained this overwhelming topic is extremely helpful and informative! Once again thank you very much! And... happy sales!!!🙌
Its amazing you took the time to make this video to help other artists! I have a question (or two): how did you write your terms of conditions for your webshop and return policy? Second question: are you considering selling digital products?
mmm for my return policy I basically just said no returns & missing/damaged packages will be taken case-by-case (usually I’m cool to re-send something if the customer is willing to pay for shipping again) and a lot of disclaimers that once the package gets mailed out it’s up to the postal gods lol - I just kinda looked at what other shops were doing to help decide on what the general standard is for that stuff, and it seems like most small businesses don’t do returns. And then as for digital products probably not on my shop, if I do anything digital I’ll save that for my (eventual) patreon :^) Hope this helps!🙏
thanks for posting this - Its been on my mind this past year to start something and as Canadian you don't find many videos like this so I really appreciate your videos explaining the dreaded tax stuff. XD
First of all: Awesome video! Thank you so much for all the info and thoughts in here! I don't have any critique, I'd just like to add something regarding pricing. In this video, it sounds a bit like you are weighing the prices just against the immediate production cost. People who don't really know or realise what goes into that might think it's too expensive, so I just wanted to stress that a higher margin is more than appropriate. Because besides the time you put into the production, packaging, etc. of that one print, you put so much more time, money, and energy into making this print. For one, whatever you print has to be created first. And before that you had to learn the skills necessary to produce it (and probably are still learning). In addition, as someone who is self-employed, your sales have to cover all the other costs that come with the business - including hours spent on stuff outside of that one print (like marketing, planning, material, software, etc. - basically the whole process). That is obviously not supposed to be covered by one print but by everything you earn money with. I am not super sure why I wrote this because non-artist customers probably won't watch this and therefore won't misunderstand, but I guess I just want to stress to everyone that "higher" prices are not only okay but necessary. So, I just hope that at least one person is feeling a little less bad and more confident about their pricing reading this (because I know many people struggle with that). Be confident ❤
I’ve been on an art hiatus for the longest time but I really want to so a creative side hustle but so hesitant to give this a shot once I have my initial branding and art together. You answered all of the questions I had that made me hesitant to start that no other video has given me so thank you, thank you for making this extensive video
This is such an incredible video. It is so hard to know what all to do. Thank you for putting all the work and detail into this that you did! I am looking forward to more videos. I loved all your points about marketing and how skeezy it feels, and how accounting (especially taxes) should not be such a mystery and the fact that it is definitely makes it a little bit of a daunting task. Your personality made this such a great video as well. So many people are loud or gimmicky. I love that you are just a regular person selling some art. This whole thing felt like talking with a friend.
dang bro this was incredibly helpful, thank you for your time and effort, I know how exhausting it can be to make long talking videos haha, but wow this had sooo much good stuff and thank you for being a visual person coz all your examples were perfect and helped so much!!! (yes I made it to the end and was also tired but had to keep watching coz I wanted all the info you had to share lol) Bless you XD
Thank you so much for including a text form! I am one of those people that have trouble understanding things without reading them. It was very helpful and unique, as I haven't seen other creators do this. Much appreciated!! I hope everything goes exceedingly well for you and your business.
Its taken me over a week to watch this whilst working but very useful info as i try to make my art pay. Lots of very useful stuff here that i will go back over and make notes. Must have taken you hours to do this so thank you very much. Cheers Rich
God, this is sooo helpful, i am a 15 year old trying to make something professional out of my mom's artwork career and had this video not been on UA-cam, i would have been screwed. Thank you so much!!
Thank you so much for sharing your process! This has helped me so much in starting to sell pottery! I’m so glad this is all in one video instead of trying to search through multiple videos from different peoples processes. You’re amazing! Keep it up!
You are my new art business Warrior Goddess Super Shero...ive been selling my jewelery here and there and not been able to truly get organized and going. This is a MASTERCLASS. Subbing right away. And deep diving into the rest of your content. THANK YOU SO MUCH!❤❤❤
I appreciate you soo much for this video. The time you took to explain everything! This has been helping me IMMENSELY as I step into being full time artists with no role models to this independent business path
Thank you so much for the info, specially about stickers, I've been trying to figure it out for a long time and you've swooshed me in the right direction :)
This video is easily the most detailed, helpful, and informative on art shop launch I've been able to find anywhere. Seriously, thanks for all of this info. I needed chapstick after this video and I was just watching it. 😂 Thanks for sharing.
This video was very helpful in my planning process, thank you so much! I love the crafty thank you cards and the "DO NOT BEND" stamp : ) really great ideas. I was also torn between building my shop first or focusing on my art first, thank you for confirming that it's a good idea to focus on my art first : )
Thank you so much for sharing this! I initially had your video on while doing work (since I find these videos of people sharing their stories to be relaxing), but I ended up taking down notes and brainstorming ideas for myself as well. Your transparency in your journey/launch process made me realise that I can/ might be able to try something I've been putting off since forever. Grateful I found your page and not binge-watching your videos. Appreciate this so much!
@@heymandyrigma I'm so glad it was helpful!!! definitely anyone can do it, it seems like a lot but totally doable if you take it step by step at your own pace - rooting for you!! thank you for your kind words🥹🙏🫶
you just got a new subscriber! I really like the concept of this video I can tell that you genuinely care and want to help other artists, I'm looking forward to watching more of your videos and I wish you the best of luck with your art and business :)
Haven't watched an hour-long YT video since.. forever. I'm just about to start an online shop and this video is exactly what I needed. Thank you so much for the detailed info. Wish you a lot of success on the next launch!
Oh my god you couldn't have made this video at a better time. I'm in Canada too! (hi from manitoba 👋) And I'm working on starting an art store as well! Just ordered my stickers today. This video was so incredibly helpful in clearing up a whole lot of things!!
OMG I was just scrolling through my recommended and saw this vid and had the wildest need to watch it. An hour later, I'm so fckn glad I did! I too am a cowtown girly - it's so rare to find artists online from here. so hello, neighbour
What an amazing video! I haven't seen any other quite like this. Filled with so much helpful info and encouragement at the end :) thank you so much! Getting ready to launch my shop soon 🤞🤞🤞
This was put together so well! First I thought oh this is too long😅 But I understand why. You really gave so much detail and so much more. Thank you for the hard work!💖 Loved it!
This was such a comprehensive video! Really covered pretty much all the bases, and I feel like most of the stuff you talked about was super relevant and helpful even for people trying to sell something completely different. Ty!
This is by far the most informative and useful video I've come across while I've been researching how to launch an art web shop. Thank you so much for sharing this stuff
The taxes and accounting part!! I always wanted to start an art shop but tax is giving me so much headache 😩 There aren't a lot of videos about how it's done in Canada, so this video is really helpful!!! Thanks for sharing 😊
Thanks so much for this! Super detailed 🔥🔥🔥 made me realize I'm definitely not ready for this. In a good way. Taking one step at a time is always wise.
thank you sooooooo much for this vid! the details was insane and it helped me alot with what i need to get ready for. i love that you are very transparent and supporting!
Hiiii! I just wanna say this video was so awesome and I'm so sad I only now stumbled upon it. I'm just about to start my own art shop too so this would've been so helpful starting out but c'est la vie! Just stoked to find a fellow canadian art shop beginner on here xD
Fantastic video! Thanks so much for sharing your experience with us. I found it immensely helpful. I'm a few days away from opening my own shop, too. Nice to see that I wasn't the only one going through similar struggles! What doesn't kill us, makes us stronger! LOL! 😁
hahaha totally understand the marketting part but you did great ! can't say about instagram but your content on youtube has been really chill and interesting so thank you for all that hard work :)
This morning while driving I was thinking about how I would setup a SKU system for my new business. My inventory is getting bigger and I need to start doing that asap. I saw your video and started watching it, but not because of the SKU thing, just for tips in general. And you started talking about SKU?? Haha, that's fantastic! Thank you so much for SUCH an in-depth vid! I'll have to watch again just to see if I missed anything! EZ Sub, EZ like :D
WOW, thank you so much for all this great information! This is precisely the information I’ve been looking for here. I truly appreciate it! BTW, you’re a fantastic artist! 🤗

I am making enough money to be able to afford luxury items, but for many years I am buying more top quality replicas, than real items. I am not person who is looking to fashion as investment. When you have no chance of working a 9-5 or any hours on a schedule as you can’t even sometimes make it to your own birthdays, it’s definitely very difficult to find something to do to be able to support yourself. At least in my experience.

I was also torn between building my shop first or focusing on my art first, thank you for confirming that it's a good idea to focus on my art first : )
it's so kind of you to share your experience🥺 and you even post the notes! i'm so grateful i found your video.
you are an inspiration, thank you 🤍
This is the best video I've ever seen about anything like this.
