On The Doctor being a woman:
The Doctor is not human. The Doctor is from an advanced species that doesn't drag around unenlightened gender biases.
The Doctor has had zero hang ups like humans do about gender roles and conventions. Especially 11. He continually kissed men and women on the mouth non-sexually (with the obvious exception of River Song), and danced with men at Amy and Rory's wedding and was perplexed at the men's reactions and reticence.
There was a lot of chatter in Capaldi's first season that Clara was a stronger character than The Doctor; that she was more The Doctor than he was. I felt then (and still do) that this was quite deliberate on The Moff's part. He is very intelligent and was setting the stage for a female Doctor from way back. Even to the point of having the words "I'm The Doctor" come out of a very strong charactered Clara's mouth. I kept saying to my SP (sweetie pie), "Moff is preparing the audience for the next Doctor as a female. Then there is The Master becoming The Mistress, and the Time Lord General regenerating into a woman without missing a beat. There are many, many more examples of this preparation that I could list, but this comment is already quite long.
The reality is that we are all (male and female) made up of varying degrees of so called 'masculine and feminine' traits, and The Doctor has fairly consistently displayed the traits of both.
While I actually would have loved to see Olivia Colman in the role due to her abundance of sass, her wicked sense of humor, comedic timing, and dramatic acting chops, I really like the choice of Jodie Whittaker. Granted there isn't a huge body of work from her, but she was fantastic in Broadchurch and apparently "wowed" in her audition for The Doctor. That's a very strong endorsement in the acting world. And after seeing the brief reveal vid, I was like "yeah, I see it".
I would like to tell you the direction that I think she and Chibnall will take for her incarnation. Firstly, look at her hair. In the reveal vid. You may say "what? Her hair?" Yes, her hair. While reluctant to point out a "womanly" thing like someone's hair, it is of note. It is a non-fussy cut. I believe this is deliberate. This (and I think the overall personality of The Doctor - with the exception of 10, who was in love with his hair) subtly implies that she isn't going to be a girly-girl. She's not going to be focused on her looks. Or even, I think, all that much focused on her gender. She will be The Doctor, as The Doctor always has been. Passing through, helping out. Never cowardly, never cruel.
I could be wrong, and if I am I'll eat my fez.
So for those that oppose this inevitable evolution, remember that this is the 21st century. And for those still adamantly stuck in the dark ages, stop dragging your knuckles on the cave floor and start respecting the strengths of the other half of our species. Trust that in a show that is all about change, all about hoping to see the best in humanity, and growing us as a collective, that we can get past negative gender bias. Maybe like Madam Vastra, we should all be veiled (but figuratively, instead) to our fellow species members who until they can accept that the reality of who one is on the inside doesn't depend upon what we see on the outside no longer clouds thinking or causes undue judgement.
While it is always very sad (and sometimes agonizing) to say goodbye to a current Doctor, I am greatly anticipating our new Doctor. Break legs, Jodie! (Ok, not literal legs like Smith and Capaldi, but a theatre persons wish of good luck!)
Oh, and I will leave you all with this:
Interviewer to Joss Whedon: So, why do you write these strong female characters?
Joss Whedon: Because you're still asking me that question.
[Equality Now speech, May 15, 2006]'

That's not true. There are a number of species that can change genders.
Clownfish, wrasses, moray eels, gobies and other fish species are known to change sex, including reproductive functions.
Chickens can sometimes undergo natural sex changes. So can some species of frogs.
Several medical conditions can result in a natural sex change in humans, where the appearance at birth is somewhat, mostly, or completely of one sex, but changes over the course of a lifetime to being somewhat, mostly or completely of the other sex. The overwhelming majority of natural sex changes are from a female appearance at birth to a male appearance after puberty. A relative handful of male to female changes have been reported, and the causes of these are not well understood.
      Ain't nature wonderful?

I understand that but it's a little weird seeing a character who started male and stayed male for 60+ years who even had a granddaughter to be turned into a woman just now. It's like seeing James bond turned into a girl, it's just weird and that's not even being sexist it's just not true to the character.

We've had the current console since the second half of Series 7, and Capaldi simply got an orange variant of it, so, I think it's time for the TARDIS to 'regenerate' alongside the Doctor.

However, I really hope they keep it a surprise and show it for the first time on screen when she walks in instead of early press coverage. Same goes for her outfit. I don't want to see her outfit beforehand like they did with Capaldi.

Firstly: Thank you for being one of the only people who isn't treating it as this... "If you want the Doctor to be played by a man you're a sexist evil bigot." or the you're not a true fan crowd. You explained your points very well and I would say better than I did. Props to you for being level headed on this. Now I have a question for you, do you think the ratings will fall after her first episode dramatically? Or will this be Ghostbusters 2016 and collapse from the get go? Or neither?

    • @CouncilofGeeks
      @CouncilofGeeks  7 років тому +39

I don't anticipate a big ratings drop on this UNLESS it truly is like Ghostbusters 2016 and just isn't very good, even on its own terms. Ghostbusters didn't underperform because it was women, it underperformed because it merely ok and by its nature had to be compared to a film that is truly great.
So as long as the writing doesn't go off a cliff, I don't anticipate any kind of similar result for this show as that movie saw.

    • @ScottsThoughts
      @ScottsThoughts 7 років тому +6

Council of Geeks That is true, at least for me though many in my community felt Ghostbusters was kind of pandering and was put off by it so they wouldn't watch it. My biggest concern currently is I am a huge Broadchurch fan but Whittaker kinda acts the same in everything. She doesn't have that Doctor-alien quality. So I fear much of that Doctor oddness might be lost. Maybe it won't but Ive watched almost everything she's in and she's the same part in all. Not a bad actress by any stretch but kinda one note. While I don't like the casting at all I want to be proven wrong. I want to be able to say I was wrong sorry for being that guy kind of thing. Back to the ratings though I think they will boom at minimum of Christmas but I think a large portion of the fanbase won't turn in for episode 2 of her tenure. Generally episode 1 people are curious but 2 you'll see if they stick. Im glad you responded. Time will hopefully tell.

    • @PennyDreadful2024
      @PennyDreadful2024 7 років тому +8

I think having concerns about this is natural and I think that is OK. My issue is with people who have already written off the show and are done watching after the Christmas special. We are getting a new showrunner, new cast, a lot of new crew, a new vision and direction for the show. It's like we are getting Doctor Who v3.0. These people are not even going to give is chance before they decide Doctor Who is now terrible, ruined, and doomed to being cancelled. I think if you are a true fan, you want the show to succeed and should be willing to give it a chance. You could be very wrong. If after watching 3 episodes you don't like it then fine. But to be done with the show right now after watching at least 10 seasons of the show simply because they cast a women instead of a man is ridiculous. If you are going to pick up your toys and play somewhere else just because of that, I doubt you cared for the show and what the Doctor stands for all that much.

I kinda figured out a way they could explain it as part of Time Lord lore. A time Lord's regeneration cycle could be Gender Fluid until they find a partner, at which point they remain the same sex for the rest of their lives.
Since the first doctor was a grandfather we can assume that he found a partner and had children, as confirmed by the 10th Doctor.
The reason he's a female now is because his new regeneration cycle effectively rebooted that biological process, meaning he has had one male regeneration and now one female thus far.
Hopefully that makes a lick of sense xD

I was actually thinking the new regeneration cycle had something to do with it too. Also, I think him withholding and delaying the regeneration makes it more unstable and therefore harder to control, which could be another reason why. If you remember, when Matt Smith was regenerated from David Tennant he said "I'm a girl." Maybe he knew that because Tennant had delayed his regeneration by visiting all his companions, he made the process different?

This has to be the most well thought out analysis I've seen thus far. You make some very good points on all fronts. As excited as I am knowing Whittaker is an excellent actor, we will have to wait and see where this is taken and how the character is written. (Watch Broadchurch!!)

  • @AlienAceCat
    @AlienAceCat 7 років тому +23

Personally, I find it pretty exciting that the Doctor will be a woman. The best part of regeneration is that the same beloved character can change and evolve in different and previously unrealistic ways. So this is a big change, but I think it has the potential to be really fun and interesting and add a vast new dimension to the Doctor's history.
I can't wait to see the new Doctor's costume, I agree, it really influences the character's impact. Its hard to imagine right now what she will wear - Missy's derranged Mary Poppins impression will be a hard act to follow!
I'm betting that part of the reason they will give for the Doctor regenerating into a woman when he never did before will have something to do with his outright refusal to regenerate at the end of series 10. Maybe when he comes back around and finally allows himself to regenerate, he'll do a full 180, and go from 'i refuse to change again' to 'i'm going to change everything as much as i can' in a sort of defiant blaze of glory. IDK, shot in the dark theory.
The Christmas special can't come soon enough. I am going to miss Capaldi like I'd miss my right hand - he's may favorite Doctor - but I'm so eager to see where this new facet of the Doctor will lead that I can hardly stand it!

I seriously cannot believe this..... you Sir have earned a subscriber! Everyone else is bashing people that are up in the air over a female doctor, calling them sexist. You seem to understand why it could be an issue. It has nothing to do with the doctor being female it has to do with how it affects the show via the character change. Which could be awesome or it could be bad. It doesn't mean the world is over it just means change has come for BETTER or for WORSE.

I don't necessarily agree. There are always gonna be idiots of course... but I think the true fan base that has a problem with a female doctor (vs the true fan base that don't) is upset more about it having nothing to do with "give a girl a chance she was the best actress in auditions" vs more a "it was gonna be a female actress no matter what." There have been quotes from both Mofatt and Chibnall saying that it was always gonna be a female no matter what. So for me that says even if a strong black male actor was the best at auditions they was gonna still just cast a female. This is what I have a problem with. I am going to give it chance as I don't have a problem with female actress at all. But as a Who fan I worry about the direction the BBC and showrunners are going.

Then I watched the reveal and was actually surprised. I did hear she did become the bookies favorite last minute but I pretty much thought Chibnall was going to play it safe. How the hell are they going to write historical episodes (you know, half the show)? Any story set before the 1960's will go something like:
    "I'm the Doctor!"
"No your not, it's 1812. Woman aren't doctors..."
    *SPEECH ABOUT FEMINISM AND/OR EQUALITY*

Maybe they'll just have the Doctor make snarky one-off comments and then just go about like she didn't hear them. Plus, I think even in the 1800s, if you're suddenly saved by the a monster by some weirdo with a Sonic Screwdriver, then you're not gonna care what the person's gender is.

    • @ryjinannon
      @ryjinannon 7 років тому +5

@Samual Johnson. A good writer could pull it off, but it will be a hindrance to the writing process and it will be a hurtle to jump over every time a story is set in earths past. Over and over they will have to work around the Doctors new gender.
Taking that in to account plus a new actress trying to settle in to a new roll, a new writing team trying to find their footing, a new show runner in Chris Chibnall (who is a good writer, but not a good science fiction writer) and a noticeable percentage of the fan base who are already unhappy...well, seems like a recipe for disaster.

    • @MaryAnnNytowl

Why 'the hell' do you think episodes must be set in the Earth's past when there is an entire universe and an entire 15 billion year timeline to work with? How very anthropocentric of you to think that everything must be centered around the Earth, and the Earth's PAST, no less!
Not only that, why 'the hell' are you assuming the new Doctor will be flouncing around in ribbons and lace and whalebone corsets? She is quite thin enough that, dressed correctly, she could easily pass for a male in an emergency situation when everyone is too busy running to stop and look for secondary sexual characteristics. I highly doubt she will be using Magic Push-Up Bras and low-cut ballgowns to call attention to the breasts that this regeneration just happens to have.
As for that imaginary discussion you're so worried about... (I must correct the "your" to "you're")
      "I'm the Doctor."
      "No, you're not. It's 1812, women aren't doctors."
      (drumroll, please)
      "Indulge me. Now, RUN!"

I don't hate the idea of a female Doctor, and the one-minute clip of Jodie Whittaker does present her as being pretty charismatic and appealing...but it is a very radical change, and Whovians should be allowed to express their (to my mind) valid concerns without being called sexist, misogynist creeps. Intellectual bullying is the realm of cowards, no matter where it comes from culturally.

Peter Smernoff , Yes, there is no reason for anybody to be name calling, although there have been comments by a loud few that were both sexist and misogynistic. In actual numbers, those commentators have been in the minority. Unfortunately, once people see those (And some have gone viral as show titles, so they have been seen widely) they tend to judge all negative arguments through a lens of the worst extreme and respond accordingly. It's not a good way for people to engage in valid discussion, but it does seem to happen a lot.

I complained that the plot twist felt predictable and lazy. That was more my issue. Then it felt like all her "woman" remarks were a bit too much. Michelle Gomez as Missy is fine, though yes people do and will complain about her. The Doctor I still remember people freaking out that Capaldi was too old and having a walker on the Tardis and stuff like that. So yeah people (including me) aren't necessarily keen on Whittaker as The Doctor. Mine has nothing to do with her gender more how the show will handle it.

to be fair the Master hasn't been written as a male in the way the Doctor has. Sure there were the occasional sexist comments from him but that was just to show he was very bad. Meanwhile the Doctor has always been written as a male. Mostly by being married several times, charming female characters, he's a grandfather, and able to more easily convince people to listen to him. The Master doesn't tend to be written in a way that makes it so he couldn't be female.
My actual issues with this are mostly the lack of need and inherent issues, sexism, they will have to constantly overcome in past settings. I also am not certain that they will write the scripts well.

Especially when they're quirky but brilliant. In fact he reminds me of both House and Sherlock. He's also ignoring the first doctor of New who. Christopher Eccleston never came across as anything but very typically masculine and it worked beautifully for me. I loved all the doctors and they're different sides. Even Capaldis callousness towards death of anyone not Clara was different than most of the other doctors. This is just something new and for me, there is no arch or type that is of any concern when it comes to Timelords lol.

Are you kidding? Curse of Peladon was absolutely brilliant! It excelled in an area of Doctor Who which has now become lost to time. Even late 70's and 80's Doctor Who was often missing this element. In the early early Doctor Who serials, you would always have sub-plots. Each character didn't just exist to serve the main plot but also had their own beliefs, goals, and character motivations, and they acted on their own, alongside the main plot. Curse of Peladon and The Silurians were the epitome of this style of writing, really fleshing out the different factions to the point where they really felt like real people, not just tv characters.

The Lovecraftian Centrist Genesis and Tomb are great stories, don't get me wrong, I love them. However, they are not perfect. One of the cliffhangers in Genesis is literally a cliffhanger where Sarah loses her grip and falls down from a great height, only to conveniently regain her grip on a lower rung next episode. It is a minor hole in the grand scheme of things, I'll admit, but it is a flaw nonetheless. Tomb of the Cybermen had many brilliant moments and aspects, but it did have a few stereotypes which made for weak characters. I'm not one to call things sexist or racist for no reason; in fact, I'm probably the guy people not knowing the real meaning of those words call sexist and racist simply for wanting the Doctor to keep his own gender. However, Tomb of the Cybermen did have some sexist/racist undertones with the middle-eastern foreigner being the villain, Victoria having to be protected and kept in safety because she's a girl, and the black guy being a servant who also gets killed off. Are these major issues? Not for me personally, but they did take me out of the story a bit. But hey, clearly as we can see with these stories, just because it's not perfect doesn't mean it's bad.

''you had six YEEEEEARS to get used to this, all right?''
this snarky attitude will likely kill the show for me. let me explain:
11th Doctor ''I'm a girl?!'' the Doctor seemed shocked and surprised by the thought. this seemed to me like he isn't capable of such a radical change and was amazed for the second he thought he had. of course he also checked his limbs, why? could he regenerate without them?! (I assumed he was just dazzled after the regeneration and was speaking nonsense)
that Time Lord the Doctor talked about that could change gender every regeneration?
okay, why? how? was it something this Time Lord was able to do like a unique ability or was the Doctor lying?
    Eight Doctor.
needs to become someone else to be able to fight the war, he's offered a controlled regeneration. ''man or woman'' was one of the options. eh, why?
''you must save us you hero you! but first change your...gender?'' why was this an option, why does this ability exist?
    Missy.
the Master regenerates into Missy, why? how?
did he always want to be one? was it forced on him? why does regeneration work like this?
regeneration is basically a healing factor, great, why did it 'heal' the Master from being male?
    that general.
''all that ego'' didn't 'she' like being a 'he'? why not? ''finally back to normal'' what? are all Time Lords originally female?! why did he become a she? if 'she' didn't like to be a 'he' then why did she become one in the first place? did the Doctor just murder someone? ''see? a man can regenerate into a woman!'' (get used to this...all riiiiight?) funny, because if you cut that scene from the episode it makes no effect on the story. it just happened for the sake of it happening.
    the 10th Doctor.
    ''I don't want to go!''
okay, then don't? why is the change forced on him? why does regeneration work like this? where does it come from? why do they regenerate?
    the 12th Doctor.
    ''I will NOT CHANGE!!''
then...don't? what's stopping you? can't the regeneration heal your injury and then have you be whatever you want to be? why did the Time Lord design regeneration to be this way?
    the First Doctor.
''I will not change, no, no, no the whole thing is ridiculous.''
eh? then why did you accept a regeneration cycle in the first place? couldn't he have asked for the none changing cycle? no? why? was it forced on him? how did he get the cycle in the first place? is there a ritual? a temple they go too? is it a reward for finishing Time Lord school? was he born with it? did he had to take a cycle for any reason?
    the Ninth Doctor.
''every cell in my body is dying''
he needed to be rebuilt on a cellular level. his regeneration implies that regeneration isn't perfect that it will heal him but also change him. okay, cool. why did the Seventh Doctor change then? his injury was just a bullet wound and poor operation. why did the Fourth Doctor change? he just fell from high up. why did the Eleventh change he was just an old man at that point?
the point isn't that we had 6 years to get used to the idea of one day there would be a female Doctor, no the point is that they had 6 years to build it up properly and they haven't.
right now you might as well say that the Doctor can fly, oh remember that time when he jumped after the TARDIS in series 8? yeah, he can totally fly bro, all Time Lords can? and you had four years to get used to it, duh!
I can tell you why Spock blocks his emotions, or why Korra had trouble Airbending. but regeneration? why the Doctor has to change his face (aside from changing actor) or why his people can swap gender? no clue. 54 years and no one bothered to explore this ability, kinda shocking.

    • @MaryAnnNytowl
      @MaryAnnNytowl 6 років тому

It would be like exploring why we need oxygen, or why the sun is hot. Because that's how the physics of it works. You have these 4-year-old or 5-year-old questions that are as obvious as the nose on your face is.
Let's take these questions of yours in order (well, in the order you have them), shall we?
#11 was probably suprised of the possibility of being a girl because the rest of the physiology at that moment didn't feel like it was; since it turned out he wasn't, no big deal, but that did show once again that it was a possibility. The rest of the body check was also potentially because it was a possibility (Eccleston's did mention the possibility of 2 heads or no heads, after all). As for why, and how, because that's how Timelord physiology works.
The "Timelord that regularly changed back and forth, you ask "was it something this Time Lord was able to do like a unique ability or was the Doctor lying?" Why must it be either? I am assuming you were referring to the Corsair, and the fact that gender changes are a regular, even expected thing is literally built in to that story. Because that's how Timelord physiology works.
You are asking next about the Sisterhood of Karn, and their patterning of a specific regeneration. This was because, had it been random, it may not have been a character and psychology suitable for a warrior, which the Doctor requested. Because regenerations are, well, random, as every cell, every atom in the body is being replaced, even down to what makes a person who they are. That is, again, why it's possible to have a gender change, because it's a complete, and completely random change. The Doctor requested to become the Warrior because at that moment he believed any Doctor (male or female) would not have been able to do what "needed to be done." And, yes, the Warrior could have been a female (as female warriors have often existed in humankind).
Your next question is about the Master and Missy. No, a change from male to female isn't a punishment - where did you get that idea? It is simply a random regeneration, and that one happened to have a female body. As for regeneration being "basically a healing factor," that's where you are making your error. It is a way for a dying Timelord to *replace* the dying body with a new one. Some Timelords waste their regeneration energy, but they are not supposed to (remember River slapping the Doctor for using it - wasting it - to heal her broken wrist?), unless they want to be considered foolish.
The General - well, yes, that was a bit over the top, but - consider this: each regeneration is a whole different character, and there's no saying that that particular regeneration's character is a grumpy female that doesn't particularly care for men. Is it nice? No, not really. But it isn't any more 'unusual' than a male on here stating that becoming female might be a punishment. *eyeroll*. it is simply an opinion, stated by a non-primary character, and the point of that being in the show was to show Clara that no, he didn't really kill anyone, since they were on Gallifrey, and regeneration would be almost immediate, AND, it allowed him access to one of those memory-wiper doohickeys (darned if I can remember the item's name right now), to save Clara, which was why he was there to begin with.
The 10th Doctor saying 'I don't want to go" was an affectation of his, where he wanted to remain that version longer - recall that he had used some regeneration energy once before to heal himself but didn't change, because he wasn't immediately fatally wounded - and was exceedingly pleased with himself when he managed it. When Timelords are fatally wounded, though, the process starts up on its own, and is extremely difficult to stop (there was one Timelord that refused to regenerate, and they looked upon it as a suicide). The regeneration process is very difficult to control, though, as has been shown before. And, why? - simply because that's the way Timelord physiology works.
#12 saying "I will not!" could have been him trying to stop the process (like the Timelord that committed suicide did), or it could have been him trying to better control *when* it happened - we don't KNOW yet, because that story hasnt yet played out all the way.
As for the First Doctor's complaint, it could have been like I described above, but he simply wasn't determined to suicide, or he may have been vain, like #10 was. However, once one is a Timelord, one accepts that is how it will be. From the time he was a child and looked into the Untempered Schism to start the process of becoming a Timelord, that was a path that he was going to be on, without fail. The childhood of the Timelords has never been fully explored, no, but it must be a very challenging process, or it wouldn't have driven the Master over the edge into madness, and it wouldn't have been something that the Doctor was afraid of failing when he was a child (the episode where Clara travels into his past).
Now, for the longest question, where you finally notice that regeneration means "every cell" is changed, but then you ask about multiple different regenerations. With the botched surgery, I believe it was the attempts to revive him with the paddles that killed him, though that isn't exactly clarified IIRC, but it still caused regeneration because, well, it killed him, and that's what causes regeneration. The Fourth? Perhaps it was because of HOW he fell, not the distance he fell. A couple of broken ribs could've punctured two separate hearts. The Doctor is tough, not impervious to injury. As for the 11th, you should rewatch that episode, as it was well-explained. He had come to the end of his regeneration cycles, and that body was hundreds of years old at that point & unable to continue battling the Daleks - then Clara spoke to the rest of the Timelords and pretty much demanded they help him - whereupon they gave him a new set of regeneration cycles. The change back to a young version was, as he said, just the "reset," and then he had to finish the regeneration, whether he wanted to or not.
Now, that all of that has been covered, you then jump back to the original complaint, and then add a complaint that "the Doctor jumped after the TARDIS because 'Timelords can fly?'" - when it's more like the TARDIS came and caught him, LOL - because she's Sexy and she wouldn't let anything happen to him. ;-) SO, just because you don't understand how Timelord physiology works doesn't mean it hasn't been covered at least enough for you to get the hint - the Doctor is an ancient ALIEN with two hearts and a blue box that travels all though time and space, and whose body and character completely change rather than dying. There is no canonical reason that said alien cannot become a person that just HAPPENS to have breasts rather than testicles. And there is no proof as of yet that this will damage the show in any way.
By the way - the snark? It comes from dealing with MRA nutjobs day in and day out complaining about how this change was "ONLY BECAUSE OF THE SJW LEFTIST TRANSGENDER AGENDA!" Pardon for the ALL-CAPS, but that's what a few ugly people have been screaming all over the place since the day the news came out. The snark was directed at that type.

''It would be like exploring why we need oxygen, or why the sun is hot''
with these questions, we don't need to address: world building, character development, continuity, dialogue, acting, filming, editing, music, authors voice, pacing. act structure, beginning, middle, end. or any story telling structure of any kind. with these questions, I would direct you to a science book, a science teacher, a documentary or a simple google search. these questions would only be relevant if it's relevant to a story.
''Because that's how the physics of it works''
science explains how the real world works. in fiction its the author.
''You have these 4-year-old or 5-year-old questions that are as obvious as the nose on your face is''
and what an impressive nose it is, for the nose knows and always aims at the right direction.
''Let's take these questions of yours in order (well, in the order you have them), shall we?''
do we have too? I have the kettle on.
''#11 was probably suprised of the possibility of being a girl because the rest of the physiology at that moment didn't feel like it was; since it turned out he wasn't, no big deal''
your interpretation of that scene isn't immediately superior to mine just because it's your personal interpretation of that scene. you are filling in the blank to best suit your enjoyment of the story, while I enjoy a story if it has the basics. ''I'm a girl?!'' he utters in shock and with a hint of disgust. (just look at his face when he says it and the sound of his voice)
(Eccleston's did mention the possibility of 2 heads or no heads, after all)
Indeed, so when can we expect a regeneration with no head?
''As for why, and how, because that's how Timelord physiology works''
and why does it work like that? why did the writers write them to be that way? just because they are aliens? as in ''a wizard did it''? that's very 2 dimensional and lazy writing.
''I am assuming you were referring to the Corsair, and the fact that gender changes are a regular, even expected thing is literally built in to that story''
yes, the entire episode was about the Corsair. (hint: it wasn't at best it was a throwaway piece of dialogue with no actual substance to it or meaning for the rest of the story, quite normal for Moffat's era)
''Because that's how Timelord physiology works''
and who told the writer that Timelord physiology works like this a wizard?
''That is, again, why it's possible to have a gender change, because it's a complete, and completely random change''
awesome, I've been hoping for a Judoon Doctor for years now!
''And, yes, the Warrior could have been a female (as female warriors have often existed in humankind)''
quick Mary, you're our only hope, time is running out! by drinking this you'll change gender and be our savior, hurry now!
      -
yeah... the question isn't if a woman can be a warrior. the question is why a gender swap was even one of the options. do Time Ladies have special abilities Time Lords don't have? no? then what was the point? sorry that scene made no sense at all and frankly is just unintentionally funny. why not give the Doctor a clown car and a rubber ducky to fight the Daleks with while they were at it? a writer can't just throw that at the audience and expect it to work.
''No, a change from male to female isn't a punishment - where did you get that idea?''
how regeneration works. why they do it, why only 12, where it came from, why don't all on Gallifrey get a regeneration cycle. why are they forced to change face/body/mind/gender when they clearly don't want to. is it a cultural reason? is it a punishment? was regeneration purposely designed to be this way? and if so, why? 54 years of Doctor Who stories and no writer thought these might be interesting topics for tales? we can have 'Genesis of the Daleks' but no 'Genesis of the Time Lords'? the order our main hero is part of? we can have endless aliens of the week stories but no Time Lord world building stories?
''As for regeneration being "basically a healing factor," that's where you are making your error. It is a way for a dying Timelord to replace the dying body with a new one.''
as in regeneration is basically a healing factor.
''(remember River slapping the Doctor for using it - wasting it - to heal her broken wrist?)''
remember that the Doctor was supposed to be out of regeneration energy all together at that point? that's the level of writing and inconsistencies I've been critical off this whole time. it only became a problem when it became a problem, brilliant writing.
''unless they want to be considered foolish''
      who doesn't?
''But it isn't any more 'unusual' than a male on here stating that becoming female might be a punishment. *eyeroll*''
you know we can't see you eye-rolling right?
I suggested that changing face/gender or whatever might be a punishment, could be. I don't know and the writers don't care to know.
''it is simply an opinion, stated by a non-primary character''
the 12th Doctor: “We're billions of years beyond your petty obsession with gender and its associated stereotypes''
apparently not. and sexism is still alive and well on Gallifrey. then again ''the Doctor lies''
''he didn't really kill anyone, since they were on Gallifrey, and regeneration would be almost immediate''
Second Doctor: ''You can't just change what I look like without consulting me!''
Tenth Doctor: ''I'm going to die'' ''it feels like dying'' ''I don't want to go''
I guess it's okay if the Doctor does it to someone else, our hero ladies and gentlemen. in any case, he forced a regeneration (Second Doctor anyone?) and so shortened the General's life expectancy.
''or he may have been vain, like #10 was''
''I'm going to die'' ''it feels like dying'' ''I don't want to go''
      odd idea of vanity.
''once one is a Timelord, one accepts that is how it will be''
and rebel Timelords are known for following the rules...
''The childhood of the Timelords has never been fully explored''
54 years worth of stories and this never came up.
''the Doctor was afraid of failing when he was a child (the episode where Clara travels into his past)''
      Tenth Doctor: ''I can never go back, I just can't, I can't!''
funny how problems aren't problems anymore when it convenient.
''where you finally notice that regeneration means "every cell" is changed''
finally, took me long enough (to quote the 9th Doctor, which was relevant to his regeneration)
''but it still caused regeneration because, well, it killed him, and that's what causes regeneration''
point was that his face and body was fine, only his hearts stopped and he had a bullet wound. changing body was totally unnecessary. the reason why I compared the two (Seventh and Ninth) was that Nine had every single cell in his body dying, and the only way to fix it was to fix every cell in his body at the cost of losing his current body for the process isn't perfect. cool, awesome actual rules. under these rules, why did the Seventh have to change body and face? the Eleventh heals Rivers wrist with regeneration right? you just pointed that out. great, so healing without changing body and face is possible. the show says. yay! he never has to change again....
and death causes regeneration? pretty sure 2-4-8-9-10-war and 11 weren't dead at the time of theirs.
''The Fourth? Perhaps it was because of HOW he fell, not the distance he fell. A couple of broken ribs could've punctured two separate hearts''
so regenerate the broken ribs and keep the rest the way he wants to be. (just like healing River's wrist)
''As for the 11th, you should rewatch that episode,''
      no thanks.
      ''as it was well-explained.''
I disagree. that episode was pretty poor.
''then Clara spoke to the rest of the Timelords and pretty much demanded they help him - whereupon they gave him a new set of regeneration cycles''
*why? because Rassilon had an off day?
*how? Gallifrey was frozen in a single moment at the time. how did they give the Doctor a new cycle? and how did they get out of that anyway?
*what? where did that nuke power come from? why didn't all Timelords go nuclear during the Timewar? yeah, just send some agents to infiltrate Dalek strongholds and cause a nuclear regeneration kwaboooom! why not just do that every time there's a problem? why was the Doctor still surprised Gallifrey was somewhere when he got a new cycle from them? oh, here's that wizard again.
''Now, that all of that has been covered''
not in a very satisfying way, however.
''Timelords can fly?'" - when it's more like the TARDIS came and caught him, LOL''
amusing, this is why I wrote ''might as well say the Doctor can fly...'' not that he actually can. yet saying that he MIGHT, has just as much buildup as turning him female. I mean you saw him in the sky right? what ya means he can't? it happened in that episode, you had four yeEEeEeEAAeEeArs to get used to the idea that he can fly, duh. you don't understand how Timelord physiology works. which is on the same level as 'the Master turned female because he did' see? it's possible. and then have no character, not even Clara question it. or ask the logical question ''wait a minute Doctor, if she can...can you?'' she saw all 13 Doctors after all and all male. to be clear: what is normal to Timelords ISN'T normal to humans. yet, everyone on the show acts as if they are Timelord experts. even U.N.I.T never asks any questions about this. like I don't know is this the same Master who has shown up time and again to cause trouble? the same Master who was prime minister of the UK a few years ago? poor, poor writing.
''just because you don't understand how Timelord physiology works''
this has to become a T-shirt.
''the Doctor is an ancient ALIEN''
a fictional one, as in someone writes him.
just because the character is an 'alien' isn't a pass to do whatever.
basic story telling rules still apply.

''There is no canonical reason that said alien cannot become a person that just HAPPENS to have breasts rather than testicles''
yeah, just like there's no canonical reason why said alien can't fly. shoot lasers out of his eyes, or turn into a car. I mean he is an alien, and aliens can do whatever for no reason. because he's an alien there's no need to explain it.
''And there is no proof as of yet that this will damage the show in any way.''
Doctor Who has been in a downward spiral ever since Steven Moffat took over. once the show attracted 7-10 million views an episode, over the last few seasons the show lost many, dropping to about 4-5 million views an episode. even a series finale can't compete with the shows glory days. (series 1-4) usually, when a show is in trouble they will try something controversial to try and gain interest again. will it work? will it backfire?
is the show heading towards a new hiatus? perhaps, perhaps not.
what was the main complaint from viewers dropping the show? either because their favorite Doctor left, or the poor level writing the show fell into, writing where things just happen for no reason. off screen story telling, convoluted series finales and giving characters abilities they didn't have before (nuclear regeneration, gender swap based healing factor)
once fans turned away because the Doctor would wear a rainbow clown suit for no reason, or strangle his companion. is history about to repeat itself? and the 13th Doctor will repeat the errors from the 6th? or will this be a start of a new golden age for the show? I wish them all the best of luck. Jodi Whittaker deserves better than to be the 'female Doctor, just because she is, shut it'
''The snark was directed at that type''
      I'm a Leo actually.
seeing you ignored my final paragraph let me elaborate on a point I made in it. ever saw the show 'Avatar the last Airbender?' in it we meet Aang, an Airbender. he's from the world where people can use one of each natural element to aid them. so Air, Water, Fire and Earth benders. Aang, however, is the Avatar and so is part of the Avatar Cycle. this gives him, with training, the ability to use all four elements. the Avatar Cycle dates back thousands of years and during the show, we learn that he is reborn again and again. as in reincarnation. during the course of the show, Aang will learn about his past lives, gains the abilities of his past lives within the 'Avatar state' and under special circumstances, he can transform back into his past lives. he does this twice, he becomes Avatar Roku again, a male. and at one time he becomes Avatar Kyoshi again, a female. during vision quests, he talks to both male and female past Avatars. he has been male, female, fathers, and mothers many times. he has even been part of every people in his world. (born in and has lived in all the nations of his world) race, sex, nationality are all meaningless to the Avatar. the show proved so popular that a sequel series was made: Avatar: the legend of Korra. set 70 years after the original series and is about Aang's next life: Korra a female Avatar. seeing it wasn't out of the Avatars ability to be born female there wasn't any real issue when this show was announced. aside from a few who just wanted more Aang stories and some who claimed that girls can't be Avatars, nonsense of course because the show set that up perfectly. the ability was always there. and the outcry to this was tiny. Korra became another hit. not to mention went even further into the show's lore. where does the Avatar come from? who was the first Avatar? how did bending start? all explored in wonderful detail. in just 100 episodes the Avatar franchise explored its 'Avatar Cycle' in glorious detail while on Doctor Who the Doctor's regeneration Cycle is nothing more than a gimmick to get another actor when the last one leaves.
want to learn about the origin of the Daleks? get 'Genesis of the Daleks' want to know the in and outs of the Timelords? their history, science, the key players? their powers and limitations? their culture? anything? you get hints sure, but nothing with any real story meat to it to truly get into. and so I'm not at all surprised people are upset by this. for it feels again like 'and now this happens for no real reason' as the show sadly has de-evolved into.
I like stories that explore its concepts, world(s), and characters.
and Doctor Who hasn't been satisfying in that regard at all for the last six seasons.

You keep asking “why? how?” They’re aliens and also when you say 12 doesn’t want to change he can’t help it you can’t always stop a regeneration.

    • @henkman00
      @henkman00 6 років тому +2

yes, I am asking the ''five ''w's'' of storytelling. if you don't know this is a logic tool to create well-crafted tales. they are:
      who?
      when?
      why?
      how?
      what?
any well-crafted story will have satisfying answers to all 5. if not then there are plot problems. things just happen for no reason.
let me give you a few example questions and let us use your answer ''they're aliens''
      1. who are these aliens? who is the Doctor?
      2. why do they regenerate? why do they change body/face? why do they change gender? why don't all Gallifreyans regenerate? why can't other beings regenerate?
      3. when did regeneration start on their planet, when does regeneration begin? when do they run out?
      4. how does regeneration work? how do they get regenerations? how do they get more?
      5. what is regeneration? what are the limits? what is a 'Timelord'? what is stopping other beings from gaining regeneration abilities? what is stopping the Doctor from remaining the person he is or wants to be/stay?
granted some have answers like they have 12 regenerations, sadly this leads too: why only 12?
however if the answer to all is ''they're aliens'' there isn't much of a story.
they had 54 yeeEEEaeEeaaars to explore the Doctor and his people, yet the truth is that regeneration is just a gimmick. an excuse to replace the actor.
very unsatisfying. it's not a female Doctor that I have a problem with, its the complete lack of world building, when the only possible defense is ''they're aliens'' then there are massive holes in the 54-year-old lore. if you are fine with ''they're aliens'' then power to you, but I enjoy stories with some meat to them. ''they're aliens'' is not a reason at all. because they aren't they are fictional characters in a fictional world. and then it's the writers that decide how the history, science, culture, powers and weaknesses, the tech and everything else works.
the question is then: why did the writers create a character with this ability? (aside from changing actors)

Let's face the biggest problem with a female Doctor Who, is the fact that the BBC is at the helm - so it will be nothing but agenda pushing. Fairly blatantly at that - Jodi Whittaker is a good actress I've seen her in other things and I've liked, but SocJus stories just aren't good and no actor/actress is good enough to combat the awfulness of the scripts she'll be presented with.

This wouldn't be 30% it would be 100%, it would be constant. It would also be ham-fisted and preachy. Where the classic episodes allowed the viewer to come to a conclusion, rather than telling them the conclusion and trying to force them to come to that conclusion.

You don't know that. None of Chibnalls stories for Doctor Who have been overly preachy, most of them have been fun little distractions and oh man have you not seen enough classic Who if you think they weren't ham fisted and preachy a lot of the time.
People are just assuming that "since Doctor is female it's going to be about feminism 24/7". Yes, I think even most feminists would agree that would be a problem if true. It is beyond ridiculous to assume this is going to be the case.

My main problem was that last seson, when they intrduced bill, we where told that it was not just some hype having a black gay female companion. Then Every episode we where told how she was a black gay woman. I see no reson this will not turn out the same. That all the stories now will be about how the doctor is a woman now. It will piss off most of the fans, and the peopel who screamed they wanted female doctor are not going to watch, because they where never fns in the first place. So the ratings will drop and the show will be canceld. And we are going to have to wait 10-20 years for the serie to start up again. It is the same thing that is happening in marvel comics.

And it was a feture because it made her conect difrent with the romans and the martian queen, because according to sjw writing. all woman are freinds. It was the same bullshit we have gotten from marvel comics. By the way, did you see the other episodes in the seson?. I would not have minded it if it was just the pilot. Having seen the whole seson I know more about the personalities off most of the backgroung characters than i know about bill, except, She is gay, black, a woman and does not like Donald Trump. thats it. O yeah, She falls deply in love after 2 min of talking. I would hate her as a charcter no matter her gender.

"My main problem was that last seson, when they intrduced bill, we where told that it was not just some hype having a black gay female companion."
That's not true in the slightest. You only saw this because you're too much of a bigot to see anything outside of her race and sexuality.
And you missed spelled season, introduce. And it's were not where.
"Then Every episode we where told how she was a black gay woman."
She brought up her race one time and it was only because it was she was concern about her race being in the past. Something any normal person would ask. She only brought when she was gay when guys would hit on her. Something every companion and woman for the matter has to deal with. It didn't bug you when the others turn down guys when they weren't interested but Bill doing basically the same thing is some how bad.
"That all the stories now will be about how the doctor is a woman now."
None of the stories have only focused on a person race or gender......
"It will piss off most of the fans, and the peopel who screamed they wanted female doctor are not going to watch, because they where never fns in the first place."
So called real fans got the Doctor they wanted 12 (a male) and the rates are now at their lowest.....
"So the ratings will drop and the show will be canceld."
The show rates are already going down with a male actor and at their lowest. IF the show gets canceled it won't be because of her, it would be because of people are just not interested in the show anymore regardless of who the Doctor is.
And you miss spelled canceled.......for the 4th time since we last met.
"And we are going to have to wait 10-20 years for the serie to start up again."
Again The show rates are already going down with a male actor and at their lowest. IF the show gets canceled it won't be because of her, it would be because of people are just not interested in the show anymore regardless of who the Doctor is.
"It is the same thing that is happening in marvel comics."
Still using this argument I see.
So having people in your entertainment that are not only white straight males ruins it for you. Do know that makes you a close minded bigot?
"Did the fact she was dating an (new) woman erevry 3rd episode did not make the serie bether. Had she been dating a new man evry 3rd episode I would not have liket it any bether."
She tried to date the girl in the opening and Penny and that was it..... The Penny date lasted about 5 minutes as well.....
According to your math, she should have dated 4 girls in the show and that never happened. Literally made something up.
Guess you're bad at math as well.
"And it was a feture because it made her conect difrent with the romans and the martian queen, because according to sjw writing."
Once again just saying SJW is what made it bad like a mindless drone again.
      "all woman are freinds."
That's why she tried to kill her?
"It was the same bullshit we have gotten from marvel comics."
So having people in your entertainment that are not only white straight males ruins it for you. Do know that makes you a close minded bigot?
"By the way, did you see the other episodes in the seson?"
Apparently didn't since you made up half the stuff that you said happened in the show.
      Miss spelled season again.
" I would not have minded it if it was just the pilot. Having seen the whole seson I know more about the personalities off most of the backgroung characters than i know about bill, except, She is gay, black, a woman and does not like Donald Trump."
That's not true in the slightest. You only saw this because you're too much of a bigot to see anything outside of her race and sexuality. And the Doctor hates Trump too by the way. Pretty much anybody with a brain does.
And you miss spelled season again....
" I would hate her as a charcter no matter her gender."
Having a hard time believing that since you completely ignored any of her actual character traits and made stuff up to hate on her.

Also, Aperently the docktor think donald trump is worse than hitler. Hate all humans, except sjw. He cares about melanin, think music is the same as math. And can not save the day without help from a female sjw who speaks emoji. But do tell me. What character development did Bill have after 12 episodes and 20 years. In what way was she not the same child at the end that she was at the begining?

Lol nice job at trying to twist it. A lot of the people who "simply want a male Doctor" have been claiming that the Doctor should never be a woman (even though the Doc is an alien), and that if they did announce a woman doctor that it was only to tick boxes, as if the job couldn't possibly be performed well by a woman. These are the same people who would've been whining if the actor hadn't been white.

    • @mahfuzurchowdhury2765
      @mahfuzurchowdhury2765 6 років тому +6

I haven't twisted anything. And what you said about the majority of people not wanting a female doctor, because they're sexist has no proof or statistics to back you up. Yes, there maybe a certain percentage who believe that but not all, and certainly *not* the majority.
Also, you're saying that "these are the same people who would've been whining if the actor hadn't been white." What!? You're, just assuming, again. That has been proven wrong on a number of occasions. Just watch a whole load of videos and read some articles about people not wanting a female doctor, or "whining" as you call it. They have said they wouldn't really mind the race of the character, and I agree.
And although I think the BBC allowed Chibnall to go ahead with the female doctor idea to "tick a few boxes", I don't believe it was the main reason. It makes more sense to say it was because of the viewing figures dropping quite low, and they needed to draw in more people - That seems like the more obvious reason.
Now, please don't get me wrong. I'm sure Jodie will do well in the role, but not feel like THE DOCTOR, much like Michele Gomez as Missy. Missy was her own great character but never felt like THE Master, like her predecessors (just my opinion). But I can't be sure it was her gender that caused the feel of her character to be slightly off - it could've very well have been the writing, the more likely case.
So that's why I still have hope she'll be fine. But if the writing is off, unfortunately, Jodie will get the blame, even though it won't be her fault, no doubt about that.

"Sorry, did you mention 'the rules'? Never EVER tell ME 'the rules'!"
And to quote also Peter Capaldi as Twelve:
"(Time Lords are) billions of years beyond your petty human obsession with gender and its associated stereotypes.”
So, you butthurt fans who feel "betrayed" from a woman Doctor, after FIFTY YEARS of white male actors to play the part, get the fuck over it: the Doctor can technically change not only appearance, but race and sex too and can even take an alien form if he wants to. No rules are broken here. No choice was done just for political correctness. This is coherent. What is broken, is a rigid and sad tradition that frankly has really done it's time. How.... HOW can people who claim to be fan of this show, a show that has made "change" and "renewal" its strong point, be so scared of this and even say idiotic stuff like "Doctor Who is over after this"? This fandom is cancerous. Terrible beyond belief.

Yeah but it's only been canon under Steven Moffat. Outside of this little bubble, it's never been canon. Are we really going to ignore 50 or so years and 13 Doctors of established canon just because in the last couple of years social justice warriors are trying to make everything in pop culture about them? They're clearly pandering. Like if RTD tried to get a woman after Eccleston left, I don't think you would have had as much controversy because it would be a purely artistic choice. The fact that it's simply being done now seems to suggest that the BBC is just pandering to an audience interested more in politics than in sci-fi. They're trying to act progressive just to appease the feminists, instead of having a good reason to do it. Mainly because, there is no reason to switch genders, hence why it was never even conceived of before as a legitimate possibility. There's nothing sexist about wanting to keep the Doctor his own gender. Funny, I don't hear any men crying that we need a male Romana, because that would be stupid and completely change the character to point where it's unrecognizable. But if you try explaining that for the Doctor, oh no, now you're a sexist, mysognist pig.

    • @therocpd
      @therocpd 7 років тому +3

I'd have no problems with Romana being portrayed by a guy.
with respect to your opinion I don't think those of us who have wanted a female doctor have done so for the reason you think.
you say there is no reason to switch genders but in my view there was never a good reason why he would stay male.
if you regenerate and have a new body that is completely random, from a probability point of view the doctor should have been a woman several times
it wasn't a 'we want a female doctor because we want one' it was more 'it's ridiculous that the doctor hasnt been a woman yet'
and I don't think in the 60s and 70s and 80s they kept the doctor a man out of purposed choice. rather it was a mix of no one thinking of that eventuality and those that did thinking society wouldnt accept it.
in the orginal doctor who they wouldn't have had a pansexual capt Harkness, because of the society of the time of production not due to plot. it's more ridiculous that for so many decades the doctor DIDN'T cross paths with a pansexual character

    • @UnchainedEruption
      @UnchainedEruption 7 років тому +7

+therocpd Oh wow, it looks like god himself has come down from his high horse to ordain what is okay.
Spoiler Alert: The world doesn't revolve around you. What you have an issue with or don't has no bearing on the reality of the show. Whether you like it or not, it is a fact that that is simply a staple of the show. You're not going to see a Zygon Doctor or a female Doctor or a gay Doctor or an Asian Doctor simply because somebody out there (probably not a fan at all) gets offended that the Doctor happens to be a white male.
Yes, except it's not random. That was the whole fucking point of bringing up Romana. She's really the only female Timelord we've seen regenerate in the classic series, so my point was that it's not just that the Doctor should be a man because I'm sexist. It's because the gender you're born with is the one you're stuck with, and that applies to female Timelords as well.
If anything, that should be proof that he can't change. If it were truly up to probability, then you're right, we should have had 6 female Doctors by now, maybe a couple of gay ones, definitely some black and minority race, right? But no, that's clearly not how it works. He's always a straight, white male in every incarnation. So clearly, probability has no impact because being anything other than the one you're born with *is not a possibility.* If it's not even possible, then probability must equal 0. Pretty simple.
Yeah, they were right to think the fanbase wouldn't accept it. The Doctor is a character that had been going on by that point for 10-20 years. To change him would be to betray the fanbase and kill the show. Nobody would dare be so unbelievably stupid...until now.
No, it's actually not. The proportion of bisexual people in human population alone is very, very small. Before what was it, 2010 or something really recent like that gender dysphoria was considered a mental illness. So evidently, no, he would not normally encounter people like that.
By the way, it's not like being gay necessarily excluded you from the show. John-Nathan Turner was the producer of Doctor Who for 9 years--that's longer than anybody else in the show's history, even today, and he was a homosexual. I, personally, have no issue with now adding in gay characters, as long as they still have their own identity and character other than being gay. Jenny and Vastra, for example, were bad characters not because they were gay, but because that was the only really identifiable characteristic they had. You don't see straight people going around being proud of the fact that they like to bang girls or make that their only character, so likewise, gay people can be gay as long as they have some other characteristic. That's why Captain Jack worked so well. Nobody gave a shit that he was gay, because he still had great charisma, great chemistry with the other actors, and a solid character.
So as long as the new character works, fine, add them. But *DON'T CHANGE A CHARACTER THAT ALREADY EXISTS JUST TO FIT YOUR AGENDA.* It's one thing to add someone like River Song who's a strong female rivaling the Doctor, or someone evil and stronger than the Master, like the Rani, but don't go changing already established characters whom the audience is accustomed to.

    • @gizmofrompizmo2177

As I said above, regeneration wasn't canon until Hartnel left the show, during Troughtons era it was explicitly said they could live indefinitely unless they were destroyed until Tom Baker introduced the twelve regeneration limit. Canon is and always will be added to to fit the needs of the current writer or writers.
And maybe if people stopped claiming a SJW conspiracy then maybe people would stop claiming anyone who wanted a man for the Doctor is a misogynist. Undoubtedly Chibnall has his reasons for making the Doctor female. You don't know what those reasons are. All you're doing is projecting your own bias and making assumptions.

    • @vettebodee

    • @UnchainedEruption

Gizmo fromPizmo Really? It's a conspiracy? Are you ignorant of the outside world? Look at the current state of movies. The Ghostbusters debacle last year, the Force Awakens had Rey the Mary Sue, video games are sacrificing historical accuracy and realism for the sake of diversity, Marvel had its most famous and beloved heroes change genders and become minority races. Marvel faced great backlash from its fans and sales figures tanked.
I wouldn't call it a conspiracy, but yeah there is definitely a trend going on where big corporations who own major franchises or pop culture icons are trying to force diversity and 3rd wave feminism into their latest products. Whether their leadership is simply ideologically motivated or they fear the bad press from leftist media I know not, but what I can say for sure is that this is happening and it's only happened in the last couple of years.

I think we should remember that we are in good hands! Watch an interview with Jodie where she talks about the show - she's animated, she's moving around and excited. She's not over it, she's not calculating and PR-stoppered. She seems really really engaged with the show. That's a very good sign. And the loss of certain subversive aspects of the doctor-as-sci-fi-hero allows for the introduction of subversive aspects of the doctor-as--sci-fi-heroine, which could be just as interesting. The most important thing is to wait and see, and join in on all the excitement about the changing of this dynamic series.

This will be the last doctor.

  • @zipperman6045
    @zipperman6045 7 років тому +4

gender identify isn't something to be celebrated an it in fact devalues the actors achievements and it feels like they choose "a woman" one who the director already knew just to placate the SJW's by being extra progressive and start the conversation to counteract low ratings.
The shows always been progressive just look at captain Jack and Bill(heck even the cross species Victorian lesbians sorry I forgot their names) as well as the general and the master becoming women losing a paternal doctor is going to hurt but I am not opposed to a female doctor and I have the full intention to watch the series to its finale.
everyone's afraid of change and wanting the doctor to stay male isn't a sexist or backwards (considering 50 years of strong male actors with female companions who have often been more badass and useful in some ways than their respective doctor) and this change doesn't feel like it's for the right reasons.

    • @MaryAnnNytowl
      @MaryAnnNytowl 6 років тому +1

So, first off, there is ZERO proof this had anything to do with anything other than just Jodie did the best at the auditions. All of the "SJW" nonsense is just coming from people like you, nowhere else. Secondly, if you don't like the fact that people/aliens from the future and from other planets aren't as sexually uptight as you are, why are you still watching? Third, you started your comments with complaints about change, and then say "everyone's afraid of change." And then complain about "badass" female companions? Forgetting the fact that there were often only male companions, of course. Mainly because Timelords aren't very gender-oriented, and don't let it make a difference in either themselves or the choice(s) of their companions. And completely ignoring the fact that there is nothing saying a female Doctor won't be badass, too... because you haven't even SEEN a single episode with Jodie being the Doctor, and you won't see a full episode with her until 2018 - probably a full year from now.
So why don't those of you complaining about SJWs and claiming women can't be paternal (oh, you'd better be sure to let all the single mothers out there know they're not good enough for you!) just stuff your opinions back down the rabbit hole and WAIT until we have a few episodes to judge by? Or is that too "progressive" and "leftist" and "SJW" for you?

Yeah, the people running it in the 1980s wanted a woman Doctor, too... but no one ever stated a particular time/season/series for it to happen, until Jodie knocked it out of the park at the auditions she attended. If she hadn't done so good at the auditions, we could have easily gotten a(nother) (white) male Doctor this time around, too. As far as the middle of that sentence, it looks like it 'kind of got away' from you, there. "... doesn't mean the applicant I never complained about the female companions... " Huh? Wanna put that into some sort of, er, semblance of sense? Or at least put a freaking period or comma or semicolon or SOMEthing in there to help the rest of us know what on earth it was supposed to mean? 9. Was good, brought the show back.
    10. Was perfection.
But the writers had a huge story arc ( Amy, River, Melody, the doctors wife, Amy's baby ect. ) that wouldn't work with 10. You just couldn't have 10 love River more than Rose. So you need a new doctor.
    11. Did well, he had a string of great stories and episodes and bad guys like the silence.
    12. Poor 12, he was just a bridge getting us ready for 13. 12 had nothing to work with, bad stories bad ideas ( sonic sunglasses) and it was all girl power from day one. The impossible girl, the immortal girl, River, the black lesbian, Missy
I feel bad for 12 he's going to be thought of as one of the worst doctors when he could have been one of the best.

Of course not. By and large my concerns are just that: concerns. Not stringent guidelines, or things that the Doctor MUST or MUST NOT be. So think of it more as me pointing out the road hazards and then trusting the writers can be smart enough to avoid them in the ways they see best.

Theres no way that this isn't being PC to give in to the SJWs, 55 years of DW where theres been 12 doctors and the war doctor, if there is truly a 50/50 chance of becoming a woman we'd of had one by now, gender swapping wasn't a thing til Moffat thought he was clever making Missy the Master (terrible incarnation of the Master btw). • @liamwilliams6651

Its sexist to want my male characters to stay male? If anything its sexist towards men to want to change the gender to female. Don't see people crying out to change female characters like Wonder Woman and Lara Croft into men do you? How about they come up with more female characters instead of changing the gender of existing male ones? Or is that too much of an effort for our poor writers? Consideration is nothing they probably considered it and realised how bad of an idea it was and dropped it, this time I'd say they had no choose cause otherwise they'd be labelled as sexist, gender swapping was unfortunately canonised in 2014 when the master became a woman, and yes you can compare it to Ghostbusters, change is a major part of DW yes but the changes have never been too drastic, good writing can't save it if a big chunk of the fan base don't wish to watch it in protest to this decision, I may not know for definite but I'm quite confident in my belief that the shows ratings will plummet to a point where the show may just go beyond saving.

I haven't watched Doctor Who in a while, I dropped off around Capaldi's first few episodes (not because of Capaldi, I started working nights so I didn't have time to catch all my shows while they're on), but since The Doctor began his new regeneration cycle, I've assumed that each regeneration of the Doctor gets younger as he makes his way through the cycle, which is why we go from the youngest looking doctor to one played by Capaldi, who was the same age as Hartnell when he played the character. I don't know how old this actress is, but it compromises that trend. I don't know if that's even something that makes sense in terms of Timelord physiology, but it made a lot of sense.

I've watched Doctor Who since I was 7, when I was that little, Jodie Whittaker taking over the role wouldn't have phased me. In my eyes any version of the doctor WAS the doctor, not an actor. With every regeneration I am like everyone else sad about what is lost, and skeptic about the successor. But regardless of skepticism among fans, each doctor leaves a legacy, Jodie Whittaker deserves a chance to leave hers. I am immensely excited to witness the adventurous and vivid personality I can already see from her short apperence. She has proven to be a talented and brilliant actor, with good writing I think her doctor will win the hearts of us all.

My only problem with the doctor being a woman is that the next doctor (doctor after Jodie) if it's a man people ate going to be like
Oh I knew it a female doctor couldn't work
If it's a female again, people will complain that they had two female doctors in a row

I’m looking back at this in 2020 and I think it is really impressive how quickly for me at least she really took on the doctor as a character. And I agree that I was nervous for her to no longer be a male character who was (mostly) non violent. However they did gain back some subversion for me in the fact she was funny and self confident-traits I feel we don’t see as often for women main characters.

I'm thinking her outfit is what we saw in the reveal video. If not, I'm guessing we won't see it till after the Christmas Special. After all, unless the regeneration happens early in the episode, she'll only be seen wearing 12s outfit, and she'll likely get her new outfit with the next series premier.

    • @CouncilofGeeks
      @CouncilofGeeks  7 років тому

It's been confirmed that outfit is a placeholder. Now there's a chance it might turn out to be something close to that, but it hasn't been settled on yet. I expect we'll get promotional images of the finalized outfit between the Christmas Special and the start of the next series.

      @CouncilofGeeks  6 років тому +1

Oh there was plenty of eye batting at the Master. There were a TON of people in denial and insisting it would be revealed that it was really the Rani pretending to be the Master. Maybe because they opted to believe that there was less outcry because they could put off dealing with it in their own heads.

After watching many of your posts on the show ( that I have loved since first seeing it in 1983) I became a sub. The reasons why ( 1) You are open minded to the fact that things change and it may be for the better(.2.)Before offering a solid opinion on anything, you do your research, until you have a clearer view point of your subject matter, it is more of a general observation. (3) Your thoughts are well ordered and easily followed. (4) I believe YOU to be a true fan of the show because you have stuck with it for good ( which is easy to do ) or bad (not so easy) hoping it will be good. By the way , Tom Baker is my Doctor and always will be.

Remember how the Derek Jacobi version of the Master was inspired to regenerate into the John Simm version when he saw the Tenth Doctor? Maybe, on a subconscious level, the Doctor is basing his upcoming female form on Missy? This has happened before, at least according to Doctor Who Magazine: the First Doctor met the Monk and soon afterwards regenerated into a body somewhat similar to his, and the Fifth Doctor regenerated into an exact duplicate of the Time Lord Commander Maxil (both played by Colin Baker). Maybe Time Lords can base their new forms on other Time Lords who leave a strong impression on them...

My biggest problem with 13 being a female is that the 14th Doctor is guaranteed to get massive backlash. If 14 is a male, people will say 13 was a token. If 14 is female, people will continue to blame SJWs and feminist agendas. The least amount of backlash I can imagine is a male of a non-Caucasian ethnicity (which I would love). Even that would have its fair share of haters though.

    • @CouncilofGeeks
      @CouncilofGeeks  6 років тому +2

Yeah, I don't envy whoever is in charge during the next regeneration. I don't think that's actually a reason to not have the Doctor be a woman, for the record. But it's going to be a very unpleasant situation pretty much any way they go with it. And that just kind of stinks.

  • @kickingroses8925

I agree that I'm looking forward more to the reveal of her costume. And along with that, I just want her to have her own eccentric personality that every doctor has had. Even those who played the role quite straight like Pertwee and Ecclestone had something about them that made you look and go; "oh, they're definitely an alien." I haven't seen Jodie in anything else so far so I'm curious to see how well she could pull something like that off, but I'm trying to be optimistic.

With regards to why the Doctor never regenerated into a woman previously, it wouldn't be to much of a stretch to suggest a second regeneration cycle is more fluid, allowing for a more diverse range of actors in the role.

71 year old new whovian here. I really enjoy your commentary, Kiddo. Mostly because you tend to agree with me most of the time. I,too, am concerned that what I find endearing about the doctor won’t be seen as endearing in a woman. On the other hand Jodie Whittaker was beyond amazing in Broadchurch so I trust her to be genuine. I also love that the TARDIS threw her out! It goes a long way toward explaining that incredible Mona Lisa smile at the end of the reveal when she finds it again. I agree about Chris Chibnal’s episodes in Doctor Who. But he did an amazing job with Broadchurch and was also the writer and producer for UNITED - which is one of David Tennant’s best movies. Check it out. So. I am holding my breath and hoping we get more of the Mona Lisa smile.

First time the Matt Smith-Doctor was on screen he did say "Im a girl!", so genderchange was in the mixer. Kind of like roll a dice.
Also means that timelords/ladys are asexual but with a original male or female mind.
Jodie might play the doctor as a male mind in a female body.
