Let Joe Know: City of Phoenix approves backyard casitas

Phoenix has expanded housing options within the city to now include casitas in your own backyard. Mayor Gallego and city council members voted on Wednesday to amend a code allowing homeowners to legally build an accessory dwelling unit, or ADU, on their lot. Many people showed up to the meeting in support. According to the Department of Housing, Arizona is 270,000 housing units short of current demand. The Phoenix City Council believes this casita option would help with that and affordability.

This is a Great move! It can help with the affordable housing shortage. It can also help with folks that have elderly parents, not to mention kids that are just leaving college with a mountain of student loan debt. The nay sayers on this, seem to be a little myopic.

Yea... they make this real nice. Modern homes and beautiful landscaping. BUT what about the eyesores and overcrowded? Shacks and home depot sheds tied together cutting corners on the laws of it and taking advantage? Watch and see....youre gonna have 10 people in a crap built shack with cars up and down your block.

They're literally all over Phoenix. Odds are it'll be college kids and older folks will occupy these. Even young professionals wanting to move closer to work. Millennials and younger want to commute less and take transit if we can
