  • PRIMITIVE SKILLS: BUILD CABIN from 7,900 stone (Building Stone House)
The weather this season is not very favorable, some days it's sunny and some days it's rainy, the temperature drops sharply, on average about 5°C to 15°C, I will try to be like a bee working hard and working quickly to have a warm place to live. warmth, get through the winter, this time I built it with very solid stone and I hope it will be long-lasting and sustainable over time!
    Have fun watching the video!

A good roofing choice would be something like bakes clay shingles if you got a good quality of clay nearby, its a lengthy process and requires a good amount of firewood. But it should work really well.
And for drying you could have a longer drying session if they're stored indoors instead.

and those clay tile roofs are relatively light too, so hopefully roof won't collapse

I agree, that's a great idea! Just like John Plant, in the channel "Primitive Technology". He is used to making clay shingles. During the rainy season, he dries them indoors, before baking, as you suggested.

make a form to build clay tiles in an ~ shape and dry them in your kiln at a low temperature in smaller batches until they are dry, then once you have them all dry you can stack them tighter into the kiln and fire them into ceramic. make more than you need incase some break.

Or use a recycled carton material for the roof: it's light and non polluting too. I had a straw roof, mainly out of romanticism, but now am changing to this new material for ease of construction and flexibility too. I can now put a skylight for a bigger passive solar effect without risking leakage.

I'm glad to see you working so diligently, and that you haven't lost hope. Your plan to make a stone house is a good one, and making a clay tile roof will prove to be most effective. Until the weather conditions change, it would be most practical to construct a roof of light, yet sturdy materials that are readily available to you, and require minimal processing. A tightly woven bamboo roof consisting of only a few layers could provide what you need, or you could repurpose your wooden planks. I would strongly advise that you construct a central stone/brick fireplace/chimney so that you can heat your home and prepare cooked food, while also providing additional support to the clay roof. Don't forget to coat all the inner walls with mortar!

  • @hodwooker5584
    @hodwooker5584 4 місяці тому +10

I would advise that you roof the house with split wood shingles. They are simple to manufacture and have a reasonably long life. This would get a roof up fairly quickly and you can use the same type of roof support structure for the shingle that you are going to use for the tiles later. Just build the roof supports for clay tiles then cover it with the wood shingles. The shingles would still be useful after the clay tiles go up. They would be firewood after you take them down.

    Hi Duong,
For the issue of your roof. You could look into the Japanese Shou-Sugi-Ban technique. It requires burning the surface of the wood before installing it. The burnt exterior of the wood then becomes more waterproof, more mold and rot resistant, protects against termites, and is much more fire resistant than unburnt wood. I do not know how difficult the process would be for you but this could achieve the results you are looking for for your beautiful new stone house.

It looks like it will be a beautiful and wonderful home!
If you plan on temporarily constructing a roof with wooden boards until you upgrade to a tiled roof in the future, it would be a good idea to coat the surface with a rubber resin mixed with carbon powder to make it waterproof and antiseptic.
It will also be useful as a packing to prevent rain leaks, and if you plan to upgrade in the summer, I don't think deterioration from sunlight or heat will be much of a problem!

Powdered charcoal mixed into natural liquid latex does sound like a good weatherproofing agent. Maybe some sulfur as well to perhaps get a bit of vulcanization in the heat of sunlight? Around here (PNW USA) I have had good results from charring the outer layer of wood and rubbing it down with oil, wax, or a mixture of the two, sometimes hitting with the torch again, allowing it to wick in, before a final buffing to remove debris and reveal any splinters, if it's to be a handrail or otherwise touched.

Don't forget to do several coats of lime plaster on the walls (both interior and exterior) and it can also be used on any exposed wood as well. This helps seal the mortar, prevents damp, bugs and prevents organic material from causing issues. It'll also help amplify your light sources.

Doing and amazing job so far. I'm a little surprised you didn't have a fireplace in such a fancy place. As far as the roof goes, clay tiles is a great choice which you can dry in batches as needed and then since you have a kiln that you've made the lime in, you can fire them in there. It will take some time and persistence, but I know you can do it. Really good to see the progress you've made so far and know that you're a great inspiration to us all.

You can put the clay tiles into the fire kiln and dry them with fire, that should provide you with all the clay tiles you may ever want!
    ----
Chào Duong, bạn vẫn có thể làm mái lợp từ đất sét mặc dù không có nắng để làm khô đất. Bạn chỉ cần làm như bạn đã làm với đồ gốm đất - đơn giản là nung đất trong lò. The gaps in the river stones would have to be filled a little better, as the stones are very round and smooth, so that the walls have the necessary stability to support a heavy roof. The blanks for the clay bricks could be dried in the kitchen by shaping clay around halved bamboo tubes and hanging them up to dry in the kitchen or placing them on a shelf or something similar. If the blanks are dry enough, you can fire them in the oven as normal...

It would help if you had a chimney to properly heat the structure. It should be in the center for the best coverage or as far away from the door and windows as possible to prevent the heat from escaping too much. Warm air rises so you do not want the fireplace too close to windows or doors or you lose much of the heat.
I would recommend that you make a frame for the roof that you will use for both the temporary roof and the tile roof, thus it means less time remaking the roof if it doesn't work for the clay roof. For the temporary roof, I think you should use bamboo or wood as they are going to last a bit longer than palm leaves and will leave less chance of vermin making nests in your roof.
Also if you are going to make the temporary roof out of bamboo I think it should be two layers of bamboo, making it less likely to leak. If you make a wood tile roof I suggest you treat the wood to prevent water from getting absorbed by it. I do not know much about this but I think you can either treat it with oil, fat, or burn the wood to lessen the impact of moisture.
Another great video, hope to see more soon.

I agree with many of your followers. You speak of fireproofing your home. thing is, wooden planks are okay as a temporary solution but wood is not fireproof. Plus, like the other roof you just took down,, the wood rots, can have the termites attack them, or worse - wood rot which spreads quite quickly. Clay tiles is the way to go. You have a kiln to heat and burn limestone. I'd suggest you use the kiln to dry the clay tiles as well. And if I might suggest that the tiles have "hooked" top edges and "dipped" lower edges? The tiles will fit into each other better, with less chance of slipping off. I admire your work ethic. When you have something to do, you do it, no matter the obstacles. Take care and stay safe.

Hey Duong! Just a reminder that even though your back is healed, that doesn't mean you can't hurt it again!!! Remember how I told you to use your legs to lift heavy things? Please don't forget! Do NOT use your back to pick up heavy things, use your legs!!! You can hurt your back again if you keep using it!!!!!!!

It looks great! I'm not an engineer, but if I were you, I would put a wooden frame all along the top-edge of the wall to distribute the weight of the roof evenly. River rocks are strong, and cement is strong, but oddly shaped rocks stacked with mortar might not be as strong as you think it is. If you put the weight on points along the wall, or even on the corners, the mortar might not be enough to keep the rocks from shifting position.

I recommend inserting rectangular pieces of wood into the stone walls to enhance the wall's flexibility.

Your new cabin is looking great! Something that may be worth trying is so mold some clay around a piece of bamboo cut in half, and then set them around a fire or a warm stove to dry out. Once they're dry, you can fire them in your kiln to make them solid and weather resistant. You would need to make a lot of pieces, but it is certainly doable!

Your idea is great, to implement it I probably need at least 1 month to have enough clay tiles

@@PrimitiveSkillsnet Straw could probably be used in the meantime, even if you preferred to wait for summer. If it's not a permanent structure, then your new cabin wouldn't really be at risk, even with a flammable roof. Wood is expensive for the amount of effort and time it takes, and it looked like you lost a lot of your old roofing to damage and splitting, so you would still need to make new planks. Would it be worth that cost if you plan to replace it in the summer, anyway?
The walls of the new cabin certainly won't be at risk of burning if you had a temporarily flammable roof, even if the doors and windows would be. Your kitchen has a larger risk of burning at the moment than your new home does. You might want to consider re-roofing it with tiles as well, just to reduce that risk, if you think the columns in your kitchen can support that weight.

I'm glad you're starting to have a home. But the idea with the roof is good, in principle you can dry them around the campfire, but I do not know if they can crack. I believe in you ✊

You are doing an awesome job! For the roof you could use bamboo for now. Split it in half and put the first layer so that the rainwater can run inside the "channel" downwards. Put a second layer the other way arround on top, so that there is a bamboo half covering the area, where two from the lower part meet. I think this would be pretty waterproof.
