    It's common practice to extend the chimney past the roof peak for the best draft to get the smoke up and away from the area

    • @ConnorMainwold
      @ConnorMainwold 9 місяців тому +6

      Exactly I'm also worried about the interior. The fact that it's wood. Hopefully that's getting taken out as quickly as possible. Well as quickly as structurally possible. We can already see visible fire damage heat damage.

      @@ConnorMainwold charred wood is actually less flammable than raw dried wood. But regardless it will burn once it reaches a certain temperature. I thought that was his plan to burn the form inside the chimney since it's surrounded by stone. I just wonder about heat and cracking the stone and mortar from drying to fast

      ... worried the chimney is not tall enough from the peak of the roof, as big rains can flow inside...
      ... hopefully none of the rocks came from the river, was told river rocks hold too much water and can explode in fireplaces...

    Đường , why don't you try using some of the mud settled at the bottom of the fish pond to grow vegetables? It should be full of nutrients from the fish.

    • @FuelX
      @FuelX 9 місяців тому +19

      You dont want to remove too much clay from the bottom of the pond. But it must contains a lot of nutrients indeed.
      I don't know if he can do that without technology, but knowing his ground's pH would help. When he adds ashes, the ground becomes more alkaline. If he adds mud from the pond it may lower the pH (make de soil more acid). Manure effects on acidity level are more complex. Most compost will help balance pH. Adding coniferous mulch and needles will lower the pH. All those choices have an effect on the vegetables growth.
      Also his soil is dense. It looks like it contains a lot of fine sand and clay. Many plants like well drained and aerated soil. Retaining some humidity but neither soaked or dry. Adding organic material (maybe compost with some manure) could help.

    • @szeddezs
      @szeddezs 9 місяців тому +13

      @@FuelX He should have raised a compost pile as soon as he had chickens so they can dig, scratch and poop in it. Maybe composting is not a big thing in Vietnam for some reason I'm not aware of.

      Duong… in all of these years and despite the amount of suggestions given by your subscribers, I have not ever seen you make much effort to try to improve the soil in your garden areas. You do not add fertilizer. You do not add compost, much less try to make compost. You do very little garden care or weeding and tending to plants to keep the garden clean and healthy. Garden vegetables must have regular care and attention to be successful and produce well. They are not forest / jungle plants that you can just plant and forget about. The soil there is just right for your native forest plants, but soil must be amended and improved to successfully grow vegetables and you must keep your garden area free of weeds, and plants debris removed.
      You could be making a lot of compost to amend your garden soil. You could also be creating and using banana circles to help grow more vegetables. I would think that you need to master growing crops before you add more mouths to feed to your farm that you must constantly forage for food to feed them.
      I like the look of your fireplace on the outside. Your masonry skills are improving! : ) But we did not get a good look at it inside your house or inside of the fireplace itself. I am concerned about it. I was shocked and disappointed that you demolished that window. As well as you plan out things, I don’t know why you didn’t plan a fireplace in your original build. I am also concerned that you did not line your fire box and flue with firebrick. That wood (lumber) will burn up to leave the rocks and mortar constantly exposed to the heat, flames and soot. Flue fires are no fun. And there will be cracking in the mortar over time around the rocks.

      @@munchkin5674 I'm going to assume that fireplaces like this are not common in Vietnam as it's a tropical climate and doesn't really get too cold. Keep in mind that Đường comes from a very poor background and fireplaces like this would be more of a luxury. as for the fertilizing the garden thing he does absolutely fertilize it he just doesn't film it because he's already filmed it so many times. His plan was to use the pig manure to fertilize the garden but with the death of the pigs that option is now gone. He's likely at a loss for what to do now. Chickens don't produce much useable manure especially when they are free roaming like his and for an income level like his, buying more animals is likely not an option that will come soon.

    Add a fine mesh wire screen to the top of the flue as spark arrestor and prevent birds from nesting inside the chimney.

    Hello Duong! 👋🇨🇦 Hope you are doing well, please take care of your back and heavy lifting. The Fireplace is very beautiful but I worry about the Chimney not being high enough, it should be extended. Also once the wooden frame burns away inside the fireplace, it might cave in, maybe build inside with some Rebar’s, Mortar and Bricks for safety, sturdiness and longevity. ♥️

      these are great suggestions!! Rebar, brick ties etc are pretty key in structural integrity. The wooden frame is going to burn away and I fear his house with it. Also needs at least another 800mm on the chimney to get well above the ridgeline, better draft.

      @@dragonsheartforge8035oh yes that’s very important too, I didn’t think of that, I’m worried about the roof line and sparks landing on it… of course with a clay tile roof it will be much safer but Duong said weather is not good to make clay tiles yet.

    Glad to see that you took my advice a while back and you made a fantastic fireplace. I miss the pigs too 😢. I'm glad to see you are doing well. I'm with a few other posts where the mud from the bottom of the fish pond would be a good starter soil and you can add fertilizer from the animal droppings and mulch. I like the idea of using some of the old vegetable field area as a new place for a barn and a coop and you can expand the airable land where those used to be for fields with quick access to water using gravity and locks. Whatever you decide, I'm her for it and I look forward to sharing some time with you again. Thank you for making my days brighter 🤗

    I agree. The mud from fish waste is very rich.would make great fertilizer. But you should only do it when you harvest all the fish to take to market. So you can harvest the fish waste mud to put in the fields to enrichen the soil. Every year you would have free fertilizer to enrichen the soil. It's a great way to utilize all of the things you have done. No waste left behind. Chicken poo is really rich fertilizer too. Rabbit poo is rich fertilizer also. Pig poo is rich fertilizer. You have alot of options to enrichen the soil for your farming, even the hillside farmland you have can benefit from all the fertilizer.

    Great video, I love your fireplace 😊 The biggest suggestion i can make from my own experience from having wood burning stoves and fireplaces is that te actual chimney should rise 2 feet ABOVE the Ridgeline or peak o th roof. This allows for better airflow and creates less fire danger to your roof. Another suggestion is as someone mentioned, to line the inside of the fireplace with brick. This will help protect the chimney itself and also hold heat longer at night. There is a thing called a damper, which is basically a sheet of metal that is meant to fit into the chimney opening, this lets you control the fire better and also will let you close off the chimney so it doesn't pull out the warm air from your room whe you aren't using the fireplace. I hope this makes sense as i am notan expert by any means 😅. You did a beautiful job the way you made it, both in function and looks 😊. I completely agreeabout movng the pig pen, that area does make more sense. Sending blessings from the USA ❤

A fireplace work's by gathering and holding heat in it's structure, which is why fireplaces are built *inside* the home, with only one of the four sides of the fireplace facing outside, because this wastes the least amount of heat. Sometimes the fireplace is built in the middle of the house, so that all four sides of it can release their stored heat into the house. With the way you've made your fireplace, a good 3/4 of it's heating capacity is being basically wasted, since most of it now bleeds outside into the open air.
    Anyways, phenomenal work on the house. Can't wait to see you make roof tiles and make a proper roof for it.

      After watching him walk around in shorts with no shoes for years now, I get the impression that it doesn't get very cold where he lives. You're absolutely right, but he might not need that much heat.

      I completely agree with you about this. Radiation of the heat needs to be inside the house.

      yea the build and then plan technique, always causes a problem at the end, unfortunatly we see how poor his concrete is which is a concern for the future.

    Looks great. Your cement looks strong too. I would consider a steel chimney liner and extend past the peak of the house one day. Safer . A solar panel setup would be very nice addition . Cheers

    You should of made the chimney higher than that to get more draft through it. i would suggest 1 meter above the peak of the roof

      Тоже хотел написать про трубу повыше. Так ему будет дым задувать под конёк крыши.

      2 feet above Ridgeline will work for clearance and draft.

    Beautiful fireplace! i think the chimney should be a bit taller, to avoid fires to your roof and to let smoke rise further up. Good work!
