    What is the shielding effect?
    What is an effective nuclear charge?
    What is lanthanide contraction?
    How does shielding effect cause lanthanide contraction?
    What is the order of shielding efficiency?

    In the ncert it speaks that the reason for lanthanoid contraction is poor shielding effect of one 4f e by another in same subshell for lanthanoid contraction, can you please elaborate it

      4f orbitals are diffused in shape (l=3), that's why they poorly shield other electrons. So that nucleus will be able to pull them closer.

    So as l increases, the shielding effect decreases because of nodes which allow the electrons more attraction to the nucleus?

    • @ChemistryNotMystery

      Yes

      @@ChemistryNotMystery Thank you! Quick question, though. Since the s-orbital has a node after every energy level, why would it be the most efficient at shielding? Thank you for your time and help!

      @@thatonecommentor7758 As compared to others, s orbital shields better. No of nodes increases with increase in principal quantum no, and it is true to every orbital.

    Why the contraction in size across the 4th period is larger mam?

    • @ChemistryNotMystery
      @ChemistryNotMystery  3 роки тому

      Because of weak shielding of d orbitals. Nucleus pull the outer electrons strongly and causes contraction in size.
