Super review. Maybe I missed it, but did you check focusing speed/accuracy with the teleconverter enabled? The thing that is often most affected with teleconverters is the focus speed/accuracy. Of course, the added telephoto reach also makes finding and holding a fast moving subject that much more difficult, which also affects focus speed/accuracy. PS, I agree 100% about the lack of Arca-Swiss compatibility and it is a show-stopper if the tripod collar does not lock down fully.
Would have loved to seen this compared to a cheaper 150-600mm zoom lens for 10x less money. Two people side-by-side in a real world scenario and see the justification for the price.

And if I was unclear, the Nikon reviewed is the product that are WAY sharper. ;)
The complaint about not having an Arca-Swiss foot goes to show how good the lens actually is. It was the only thing that Chris could find to complain about! For the idiots that state the lack of an ARC-Swiss foot is petty.....well you are wrong. It is a standard, and is a very secure and fast way to mount a lens. Especially important for a heavy telephoto lens. Also adding a plate to the foot does in fact cost more than $15.00, which someone in the comments said. In addition a plate adds a failure point to mounting a lens. I've seen them come loose and the results could be disastrous! I have a feeling that a lot of the people in the comments have never used a heavy telephoto lens.....

I agree that it is a serious error that the collar of this Nikkor allows the lens to rotate even when fully tightened... Personally I would not be the least concerned about a lack of detents at 0, 90, 180, 270 degrees. I do also agree it would be nice if Nikon machined an Arca compatible dovetail into the mounting foot. I don't know why Nikon, Canon and Sony don't do that... Tamron and Sigma do... and it seems such a no-brainer, low cost feature for the lens maker to include. (Not that a separate Arca style lens plate costs very much or adds any noticeable weight). Performance, build and image quality of this Nikkor certainly are top notch. But, frankly, EVERYONE makes superb 600mm f/4 lenses. Yeah, Nikon added a built-in 1.4x TC... but they also charge $2500 US more for their 600mm f/4 than Canon and Sony. You can purchase one of either of their lenses along with a separate Canon or Sony 1.4x TC and still have $1950 or $2000 left over to help witth the purchase of another premium lens or put toward your next photo safari. But, yeah, there is what I'd consider a minor convenience being able to switch the 1.4x TC in and out quickly, without need to remove the lens from the camera. I'm just not sure that makes the lens worth an additional $2K.
Whether the TC switch is a "minor convenience" or game-changer depends on the usage. And it seems that the person who can put down their credit card for $13k can also put it down for $16k. They're already in the, "If you have to ask how much it is, you can't afford it" territory.
Weighs about the same as the original AF-S 300/2.8 (the real original, without VR). Ridiculously light lens. The 800/6.3 being under 2.4kg is even crazier.
Well, I declare! Is that Chris with a little old strap on the camera 😊😊😊 Now you know that lens was really, really expensive ... before he even said the price 😂
What a pedestrian review that was. Here we have the best 600 f4 ever made by far. It makes ever other 600 f4 look like an 18th century telescope. The chasm between the Z 600 f4 and everything else is so ridiculously large that the others manufacturers should remote self-destruct their lenses in shame. And somehow obsolete clicks on the tripod collar was thing to talk about. Arca Swiss tripod foot was a thing to talk about. Same thing goes for the Z 400 f2.8. Everything else on the market is a child's toy.
You youtubers are so caughan up in that lense mount to have it click when rotated. So I assume that you always setup your tripod perfectly level?! I’m feeling that mention this just because some other reviewer said it in one of his reviews. You probably didn’t think about it before that (just guessing 😅)
Beautiful lens. I think it highlights how for super telephoto, too large of an aperture can be overkill. In the opening shots, half that wolf's body is out of focus.
That's the entire point of fast telephoto lenses. Insanely sharp focus on the eye and then incredible bokeh and softness no other lenses can achieve. You can always stop them down if you want more in focus...
APS-C is dead for professional use, it’s not 2017 anymore, Z8 and Z9 can crop on sensor for the same result, and still have a higher pixel density than APS-C’s - yet doesn’t give up anything in low light. I can see the argument in terms of price, but as soon as Nikon bring EXPEED 7 to the Z6/7 lineup (like they have with Zf) there’s going to be plenty of cheap but excellent AF bodies.
I wish my RF600 F4 had the built in 1.4TC. Nikon was smart by putting that in on the 400 and 600 for the Z mount and I'm kind of surprised it has taken someone this long to do it. When I bought my first 600 the EF II I bought the 1.4 and 2x TC at the same time and again with the RF model. It just seems like every wildlife shooter who has a 600 F4 buys at least the 1.4 TC right away. I always wondered if Canon and Nikon had a gentlemen's agreement with Arca Swiss plate makers to not build lenses with it built into the foot on new lenses. It's never been a problem for me I but one with a new lens and it just stays on it forever.
Nikon and Canon may have a handshake agreement with Manfrotto to not build lenses with Arca-Swiss dovetails built in. RRS and Kirk sell the replacement foot for about $100-150. The advantage of the built-in TC is that it is specifically optically designed for that lens. The regular TC has to get as close as possible to a variety of lenses.
If birding and wildlife was my profession instead of just a hobby….. I still wouldn’t get it 😅 that’s a lot of money to hand over 🤦🏽. Maybe if I hit the lottery or if the stock market had a major spike. Until then, I’ll just be content watching reviews of it.

Well done Nikon, looks to have AMZING IQ
Why you don't mention the tripod collar ? May be you should reshot this video and try to talk about it ;)
What a nice lens for street photography
Weighs about the same as the original AF-S 300/2.8 (the real original, without VR). Ridiculously light lens. The 800/6.3 being under 2.4kg is even crazier.
Well, I declare! Is that Chris with a little old strap on the camera 😊😊😊
Now you know that lens was really, really expensive ... before he even said the price 😂
Wonder if it was specified in the rental agreement
@@sharvo6 They don’t ever dictate any handling rules. They just look at me with disapproval because they know me well.
@@niccollsvideo lol, I thought I saw an almost-slip in the video, but I'm taking it to my grave, unless that was your idea of a joke?
@@niccollsvideo There's the regular insurance added to the rental. And the Niccolls Premium added for you. 💰💰
So it's just three Not in price while filling more than three spaces in the backpack.
Not too bad of a deal!
Damn I need to go to the zoo.
Hmm. I don't think Chris likes the tripod foot for some reason
It's odd that Sony, Canon and Nikon seem to refuse to have arca-swiss plates incorporated into their lens collar feet.
That is not a Nikon... That is a "King-kon"!!! Very nice!
You have a gift for hyperbole.
1:27 look at that tongue. very sharp and clean.
You youtubers are so caughan up in that lense mount to have it click when rotated. So I assume that you always setup your tripod perfectly level?!
I’m feeling that mention this just because some other reviewer said it in one of his reviews. You probably didn’t think about it before that (just guessing 😅)
It is weird that they left out a few things that much cheaper lenses have.
Awesome
Beautiful lens. I think it highlights how for super telephoto, too large of an aperture can be overkill. In the opening shots, half that wolf's body is out of focus.
That's the entire point of fast telephoto lenses. Insanely sharp focus on the eye and then incredible bokeh and softness no other lenses can achieve. You can always stop them down if you want more in focus...
I was going to buy it for my Z50 to photograph squirrels in the local park but... no arca swiss plate cut outs? Hard pass.
I have 2
One for Saturday
One for sunday
You've definitely got Nikon's attention on the lack of an ARCA Swift style tripod cutouts 😂😂
If only there was a professional APS-C Z-mount body (D500 in Z form) to pair this with for mind-boggling reach...
That's not a lens...THIS is a lens!
If birding and wildlife was my profession instead of just a hobby….. I still wouldn’t get it 😅 that’s a lot of money to hand over 🤦🏽. Maybe if I hit the lottery or if the stock market had a major spike. Until then, I’ll just be content watching reviews of it.
Mine just arrived last week; 13 month wait, but well worth the wait. Only have a few hundred shots (all hand held) on it so far but dang it IS sharp and ooooh the creamy backgrounds! As for price, I find I'm functioning well after selling a kidney :) P.S. -- you can't harp enough about the ridiculous refusal by Nikon et al to not put arca swiss feet on their lenses. Infuriating. Right up there with the 50 cent lens caps and $2 hoods!
