this song is evidence that music is universal. It was a big hit in the Netherlands in the late `70s or early `80s. In those days we did not have internet or cellphones or what ever, except our turntables and stereo-sets. So how the f.. could we know what the lyrics meant. Only years later when i read an article about Anak Krakatau ( in the straits of Sunda) i learned that Anak means child. It is a beautiful song and an ever better arrangement, with the guitars and strings and all. Great song, timeless!

This is Freddie’s entry to the First Metro Pop Song Festival in Manila Philippines in1978. It didn’t win the first prize but it became the most popular and most appreciated all over the world. I am very proud of you, Mr. Freddie Aguilar. A song like Anak comes once in a lifetime. I’m lucky it came in my lifetime. But this song is timeless. This is a post from a fellow Filipino from other UA-cam video of anak cover.
Anak means My Child (spoken in 2nd person). This is NOT a literal translation but my own way of translating it so you have a better appreciation of the song. I added the "my" before the word child as this is more befitting for the song popularized by Freddie Aguilar (Folksong legend in the 🇵🇭).
    Anak
    Freddie Aguilar
    ANAK LYRICS
Nang isilang ka sa mundong ito
(when you were born into this world)
    Laking tuwa ng magulang mo
(your parents felt a surge of pure happiness)
At ang kamay nila ang iyong ilaw
(and their guiding hands are your beacon of light. )
At ang nanay at tatay mo'y
    (and your mom and dad)
    Di malaman ang gagawin
    (are fretful and afraid)
    Minamasdan pati pagtulog mo
(that they keep watch over you even in your sleep)
At sa gabi'y napupuyat ang iyong nanay
(and with sleepless nighttime , your mom )
    Sa pagtimpla ng gatas mo
(prepare and feed your milk) > NOTE this shows the sacrifices of the mom preferring to the milk as a symbol
At sa umaga nama'y kalong ka
(and at daytime you are cuddled )
Ng iyong amang tuwang-tuwa sa iyo
(by your dad who is overly blissful with you)
Ngayon nga ay malaki ka na
(and now that you are an adolescent )
    Nais mo'y maging malaya
(you wish to be free and independent)
    Di man sila payag
    (though they have hesitations)
    Walang magagawa
    (they allowed you)
    Ikaw nga ay biglang nagbago
    (Suddenly, you begin to change)
    Naging matigas ang iyong ulo
    (became stubborn and indignant)
At ang payo nila'y sinuway mo
    (you defied their guidance)
Di mo man lang inisip na
(why haven't it crossed your mind)
Ang kanilang ginagawa'y para sa iyo
(that everything they do are for your own good)
    Pagkat ang nais mo'y
(should it be because you wanted)
    Masunod ang layaw mo
(to just follow what you feel like wanting w/o thinking of their welfare)
    Di mo sila pinapansin
(you completely shut your door behind them)
    Nagdaan pa ang mga araw
    (As time passed by)
    At ang landas mo'y naligaw
(your life spiralled downhill and you went astray and got lost)
Ikaw ay nalulong sa masamang bisyo
(you succumbed to vices and wrongdoings. )
    At ang una mong nilapitan
(the first person you asked for forgiveness)
    Ang iyong inang lumuluha
(is your mom who is in crying in grief)
At ang tanong, "anak, ba't ka nagkaganyan?"
(and she caringly asked, "my child, why did you end up like that?"
At ang iyong mata'y biglang lumuha ng di mo napapansin
(and your eyes begin to tear up suddenly)
    Nagsisisi at sa isip mo'y
(you're full of remorse and in your contemplation)
    Nalaman mong ika'y nagkamali
(you realized all the mistakes you have done. )

Also the world is so small if you are eager to explore it.

The lyrics translated into japanese is the most accurate compared to other languages. And one more thing i guess is that bc unlike other asian cultures where children often obey and take care of parents, which relationships btw them are in hence strong, japanese life style is similar to that of western countries. Maybe this song unconciously hit their hearts and reminded them about those who raised them, feeded them, took care of them in the childhood. The old in japan are lonely and have to take care by themselves.

i think i was 5 when i heard this song. i love this song so much for unknown reason. i even don't understand what this song meant, but when i was a child, i found this song is sad, but joyable at the same time. it's happiness and sadness at the same time. i love it. i never knew what the song called, but i remembered my brother told me it's anak. in indonesia anak means child. i dunno why, but i forgot about it eventually. it was the time of tape record. we lost the tape so i never heard it again, and the tape player was broken. now, i missed this song because soldier of fortune by deep purple reminds me of this song, i asked my brother for this song. luckily he still remembers it. now i know what it means, and i think this was fated to help so many people in this world, because i already felt the emotion in it when i was a child, when i know nothing about world. it's amazing really.

Freddie Aguilar Anak (English Version) Lyrics

When you were born into this world
Your mom and dad saw a dream fulfilled
      Dream come true
      The answer to their prayers

You were to them a special child
Gave 'em joy every time you smiled
      Each time you cried
They're at your side to care

      Child, you don't know
You'll never know how far they'd go
To give you all their love can give
To see you through and God it's true
They'd die for you, if they must, to see you here

How many seasons came and went
So many years have now been spent
      For time ran fast
And now at last you're strong

Now what has gotten over you
You seem to hate your parents too
      Do speak out your mind
Why do you find them wrong

      Child you don't know
You'll never know how far they'd go
To give you all their love can give
To see you through and God it's true
They'd die for you, if they must, to see you near

And now your path has gone astray
Child you ain't sure what to do or say
      You're so alone
No friends are on your side

And child you now break down in tears
Let them drive away your fears
      Where must you go
      Their arms stay open wide

      2X [Child you don't know
You'll never know how far they'd go
To give you all their love can give
To see you through and God it's true
They'd die for you, if they must, to see you]

ANAK is a universal song, the original is in the Tagalog language, sung by Freddie Aguilar and translated into many languages all over the world. I don't know Tagalog at all but the best version of ANAK I enjoy most is the original Tagalog version and that too sung by Freddie. Freddie's voice is deep penetrating when combined with the music and tune. This is an evergreen song that will last for a 1000 years.

Once I was tempted to "investigate" about what he is singing, but then I refrained from it, since this way just everything is in that song. Depending on my mood and train of thought Freddie sings about the according subject.

I’m Filipino with a family of my mom and dad I’m an only child. We moved to America when I was baby the only generation from my fathers side that left the country. After high school drugs took a hold of me. Been arrested locked up in a cell, me and my parents were always going at it my life was deteriorating. When I turned 30 God came into my life and since then I’ve been clean and sober and back with my loving parents. During the dark times during my drug use my parents always loved me no matter what and they are so happy that God has changed my life.
I always heard this song as a kid but it took me until just recently to understand what the song means and the story it sings and it made my heart drop. I will forever play this song to remember how my parents stood by me through the rough times. The song damn near represents what we went through

I barely understand a word but the song is stunningly melodic, warming and cuddling.

but the message of this song is pretty painful---not warming nor cuddling at all--but I guess the melody gives a certain warmth which is good to alleviate the painful words of the song.

im filipino, and "anak" basically means son, and the song talks about a son who is very ungrateful to his parents and doesn't realize his mistake until after he got imprisoned when he did bad things

Love you Freddi... This song will sang till the end...
    Love from Bangladesh. 🇧🇩
When you were born into this world
Your mom and dad saw a dream fulfilled
    Dream come true
    The answer to their prayers
You were to them a special child
Gave 'em joy every time you smiled
    Each time you cried
They're at your side to care
    Child, you don't know
You'll never know how far they'd go
To give you all their love can give
To see you through and God it's true
They'd die for you, if they must, to see you here
How many seasons came and went
So many years have now been spent
    For time ran fast
And now at last you're strong
Now what has gotten over you
You seem to hate your parents too
    Do speak out your mind
Why do you find them wrong
    Child you don't know
You'll never know how far they'd go
To give you all their love can give
To see you through and God it's true
They'd die for you, if they must, to see you live
And now your path has gone astray
Child you ain't sure what to do or say
    You're so alone
No friends are on your side
And child you now break down in tears
Let them drive away your fears
    Where must you go
    Their arms stay open wide
    Child you don't know
You'll never know how far they'd go
To give you all their love can give
To see you through and God it's true
They'd die for you, if they must, to see you live
    Child you don't know
You'll never know how far they'd go
To give you all their love can give
To see you through and God it's true
They'd die for you, if they must, to see you live

My wife played this song at home and I liked it so much I played it over and over. In May of 2013 I was in Manila with my family and when I expressed a liking for his music a Filipino friend asked me if I'd like to meet him. We went to Ka Freddie's, his club in Manila and when he came in he was not only approachable but I got to shoot a few games of pool with him. (He's pretty good, we broke even). When he went up to do a set it was a great time. Many of the songs he played that night I still listen to just to remember.
