    Essentially what this kayak delivers is increased range and speed. That's important to a rather small subset of kayak anglers. The absence of any GPS integration to monitor speed over ground makes the cruise control application limiting given that in many of my troll fisheries a difference in speeds of 0.2 mph can make the difference between limiting out and getting skunked. In the end I suspect many, myself included will decide that at $6000 the cost to benefit ratio doesn't pen out. If you have certain high current fisheries that river or tidal in nature it may make a difference to those individuals that simply lack the physical endurance to participate. I'm also not a huge fan of the Bigwater hull design. If they could drop the seat, shed 15 lbs of plastic, lower the center of gravity, and incorporate traditional gear track it would be a lot better kayak. At $6000 though it does make the AutoPilot look like a better deal with its advanced features. However, if you just wanted a speedy motorized kayak with a pedal drive I think I'd rather just buy a Newport motor NK300 ($1300) and a Chin's 100ah 36v battery ($1100) and slap it on any pedal drive kayak you want and probably come in $1000-1500 less than the new Bigwater 132 ePDL+. With the used kayak market saturated right now you could probably do even better than that.

      This is the comment i was looking for. It looks like you could swap the peddles into an existing bigwater but if they were even going to offer the peddles standalone they would be 4500+ is my guess

      Pretty spot on take. Like you, I would have liked some changes to the design...pretty much all that you said. I for sure think this was made to simply be an assist motor system and not anything that would undercut the AP. This also raises the question of when the AP 2.0 comes out...what will THAT cost is this ePDL is at 6k? We shall see.

    Great review. Just got one of these. I’m very pleased with the performance after two outings.

    I think the bigger issue is the fact that the motor is a 36v system. It comes with a 20 amp hour battery, but I can't imagine the range is all that great especially if you're a tournament angler

    I did email Oldtown on the date of the announcement and the battery is NOT recharged by pedaling. I'm a fan of what they're doing here but will probably wait for v2.0 in hopes that they either include as standard or as options, Spot Lock and the ability to charge the battery via Pedal Power. I agree this Kayak was made for Lake Michigan Salmon fishing which begs the question "How could Oldtown not have thought to give the ChiCityYaker one already to put through the paces and review first hand?!?"

    • @ChiCityYaker
      @ChiCityYaker  Рік тому

      I don't ever see SpotLock coming to this thing...it would canibilize the AP. I'm getting my heads on one soon, they're still not even in full production so I'll get a pre-production demo unit to test and make a few videos on to share. No eta on this tho.

    Ideal if it allows a place under the hatch for a 100ah + battery along with space for a second battery dedicated to the electronics but $6k is a hefty ticket

    I LOVE my BigWater! I wish they had the option to just buy the drive and put it on my existing hull but I wont be spending that kind of money any time soon. I like the gunnel sytem lets you drill holes if the track desnt work as well. i feel like it allowed me to customize easier and more and when you sell it just swap out the plates.

    20ah @ 36v is the same amount of power as 60ah at 12v. 100ah at 36v is a huge battery

    I had a FeelFree Dorado withe the motor that inserted in the pedal drive. I sold it within a year and bought the AP120. Going on 3 years and still like it. I like the concept of the ePDL. I would not give up spot lock and other features on the Minn Kota on the AutoPilot. I have a Salty that I would consider putting the ePDL drive in it if it fit.

    • @ChiCityYaker
      @ChiCityYaker  Рік тому

      yeah same here I won't ever give up the AP but the ePDL would be a nice addition to mix it up and be able to pedal and have power too.

    Like the side-by-side commentary. Thinking BIG difference between 20AH 36V & the 100AH 12V you run on the AP-120.

    When I was young I thought boats are too much because one had to deal with that trailer in order to own one etc. So i bought 18 foot Clipper McKenzie fishing canoe. I roof topped it, I rowed it and I motored it with a 4hp 4 stroke outboard it came with. It was yellow and I loved it… until my back screamed at me😅 sometimes happens once you reach a mature age. So I tried a boat. This boat I put on the water and park a trailer in less than 10 minutes with both down-riggers and all the gear already in. In comparison it seams it used to take me half a day to fiddle with that canoe and it’s content just to put it on water and the rest to put it back on a roof rack😂. Now having lived with a boat on Great Lakes shores for 4 years It’s beyond me why people spend any money and effort to go fishing in a kayak or a canoe. It must be more than just a fact they never tried to fish from a boat! Try before you buy! Your azz will later thank your head, trust me on that! A used boat in good running condition might cost less than those latest and greatest kayaks. I wish someone gave me the advice years back. I would have fished more! As a bonus you could piss like a boy in the process😂😂😂

      I'm of the mindset to each their own when it comes to choice of fishing vessel. To counter what you said, for someone to have a boat now brings with is gas costs, maintenance costs, storage costs & accommodations, insurance, trailer & trailer maintenance, emergency costs when something inevitably breaks or fails. With kayaks its a one-time upfront costs which after that there is no more costs to maintain it. More importantly though its a unique way of fishing which is vastly more intimate, which is the best way I can describe it.

      @@ChiCityYaker all valid points liability wise, and those were exactly what kept me from buying one all these years, until l made a move. I live on Lake Ontario. I bought a 2004 16 foot StarCraft dual console 60 hp merc with all boat accessories, two electric downriggers fishing rods all included for 11 grand Canadian. I keep it in my garage all ready to go. No storage fees. Car insurance covers my boat and trailer up to $10K so having received a few quotes it did not make much science to pay extra. It’s optional in Ontario. As for gas I probably save now for Ontario lake 15 min drive from my house, wile we canoe i had to drive hundreds of miles up north looking for a calm waters of smaller lakes. Ontario is too unpredictable and cold in case you capsize in a canoe. Hence king salmon was out of question before. Now kings or steelheads is 80% what I end up with. Sometimes coho, lakers or browns in spring. But the cherry on the icing is I can go every day. Before or after work depending what shift I work. So it is case by case for every individual depending on lots of factors. I just wish I switched earlier.

    Absolutely hate it lol. Seems like a 100% downgrade from my autopilot 136. You lose half the casting deck to the petals. No spot lock?! No ability to troll around and steer while standing up because they got rid of the remote!? And $1500 more than the autopilot!? Terrible lol. Only people I can see wanting this is old people that want a back up motor for when they get tired. But then this would be too heavy for them.

      I think it wasn't meant to be on par with the AP otherwise it would cannibalize it. Seems like a middle of the road options between pedal drives and the full functionality of an AP. I'm curious to see how it does sales wise.

      The ePDL will be for me. Need speed, range, & confidence to return from coastal forays. Trolling motors only leave you a paddle when it goes down. This is for those who need range & strength to beat down ripping currents.
