I'm using Foreflight in the plane, but use a couple for planning. One that doesn't get much press, but works well if you are an AOPA member is their planning tool. I definitely use it during the planning phase, but not so much as an EFB in the plane. Also another tool, not for planning is Cloud Ahoy. I use it during training to review flights and identify areas for improvement (and there are plenty!).
Her in the USA , I,m a Foreflight user , its great , total flight planning on the iPad or the website with the filing option too . BTW , your sentence about you TV being your secondary screen and the iPad being primary , well thats me too , planning mock flights etc while some random tv show just plays in the background !!!!! .. one other note about Foreflight , theres an ADS-B receiver which I have called "stratus " which works in conjunction with foreflight and basically turns your iPad into a mini glass cockpit .. pretty cool . safe skies , keep moving !!!!
I have recently changed from OzRunways to AvPlan EFB as well, I like the extra integration AvPlan has for things like the Bose A20's. The other things like you have mentioned in the video as well, the overlays, the terminal information etc. I do wish that you could have a feed for OzRunways and AvPlan EFB planes. I have found that a lot of the RAA planes use OzRunways so you don't see them in AvPlan and the other way as well.
stef, I'm a retired traffic policeman and future student pilot. the policeman in me noticed you might hae put your mike helmet on backwards! HOWEVER you wore your helmet!!!
Gday Stef, I notice you created this 3yrs ago. Any chance you could create a updated comparison between OzRunwys and AvPlan EFB? I purchased an iPad Pro last year because I wanted the larger screen, but as I’ve realised it’s too large for the cockpit so I’m about to choose a 7”ish option. I’d prefer a Samsung, but it seems there are features not yet available on the Android release (W&B) that are available on IOS that I really would like to use. I’ve used both of those listed above and like them both, but I’d be interested to hear a more current evaluation of the two…….if you can be bothered. Cheers.
Thanks, Stefan - very helpful indeed!! I'm also glad to hear you have at least some pity on us poor learners forced to plan complex navs completely by paper and whiz wheel. :o
We've all been there Cameron, it's good to get the basics before moving on to the electronic versions. But I can definitely see a day (not that long away) when paper maps and pencils are a thing of the past.
Nice video, thanks for sharing your thoughts on EFB's and what you use and why. Also liked the more 'raw' vlog which made it feel more like having a bit of a chat with you! Look forward to the next one!
I use my AVPlan with XPlane 11 using real world satellite imagery when at home. Great way to get used to the app but also see what the route looks like flying VFR.
Controversial... AvPlan vs OzRunways is like: Boeing vs Airbus Low Wing vs High Wing Cessna vs Piper Cirrus vs Diamond Holden vs Ford Melbourne vs Sydney etc... But a good video and solid reasons for your choice... horses for courses. I prefer the other brand but I've been using it for a long time so I'm used to it and for what I use it for I like the way it works.
I had a classic 'the people you meet' story the other day, and read on because you'll see how it relevant. I was out one night and me and some of the other guys there started talking about aviation, we discovered we were all AvGeeks, and started having Phonetic Alphabet competitions. Then this happened; Me: X-Ray, Yankee, Zulu A guy (I forgot his name): Tango Delta Sierra Me: Wait, what? Stefan Drury? Him: Yeah, my dad knows him Me: :O We talked for a good 15 minutes about your videos and your outback trip!
Try saying Mike Foxtrot Sierra a few times first thing in the morning (before coffee). I had to yesterday and after my line-up call had the tower say to me "Too early for you, huh?" True story. (Some call-signs should be banned..)
What happens if you get ramp checked? Do you still have to produce paper charts to the CASA inspector? Do you keep 2 EFBs as a backup? I realise going electronic for everything these days is important but don’t forget Dead reckoning, and your CRP-1 and your pencil cases and protactors........
As long as your EFB is CASR175 approved (this is the important bit) then you are fine. Be aware however that not all EFB's claiming to have Australian data are approved. As far as I'm aware (and I'm not an expert nor do I represent any particular brand of EFB) OzRunways, AvPlan, JeppesenFD and Lido are approved and all others aren't. No paper is 'required'. You do however need to produce a working EFB... so if it over temps or otherwise dies you may be in trouble. You don't 'NEED' a second EFB device as a backup for PRIVATE operations. Note in commecial operations you do, but there are a whole other bunch of boxes to be ticked to use an EFB in a commercial environment like administrators and data versions etc. However that all said smart money would be to have SOME form of backup, be that another device or paper. I agree with your last point, you should learn the manual way first, so you understand what the machine is doing... after all garbage in garbage out!
Thanks Floyd, I'm trying to open up the world of aviation a little for pilots and non-pilots alike, that's one of the objectives of this channel so it's great to hear feedback like that. Thanks for commenting mate, cheers, stef 👍
Hey Stef, just found your channel an d I’m already a fan. I am starting my private pilot course and I am going to use an electronic handbag and I am wondering if you could do a video showing students what kind of apps we need and the overall things to expect. Thanks mate!
I have to re-enter it. I know some apps can sync (like the Garmin Pilot app) but not sure if AvPlan can do that. Or perhaps it can and I haven't worked that out. But bottom line - I manually re-enter the flight plan hence the mistake I made in this video: ua-cam.com/video/t_kUvuk6hQA/v-deo.html
Stefan. I am off to Canada next August. Do you have a vlog about a trip to Canada flying from Melbourne. I am not a pilot just interested in Travelling. Keep up the good work. PS I do ride and own a few bikes.
Hey David, I haven't shot any Canadian carrier videos actually, that's a bit of a gap in my back catalogue. Hopefully someone from Air Canada is watching, I'd love to vlog the Melbourne - Vancouver route...
Yo @Stefan - sorry to be one of those guys... but you can't use your iPhone (or other smart phone) as a backup EFB here in Australia - see www.casa.gov.au/regulations-and-policy/standard-page/frequently-asked-questions "EFBs need to be able to display information in a manner comparable to the paper aeronautical charts and data they replace. They should have a minimum screen size of approximately 200mm measured diagonally across the active viewing area. A PDA can only be used for calculations. A smartphone is not appropriate or acceptable as either a primary or backup device."
Yes judging by these comments its different strokes for different folks and wether it's legal or not to wear a helmet it's always a good idea to put one on because it could save your head from KAPUT.
Hey Stef, Currently doing PPL Nav Training. Could you please do a video on how to plan a NAV flight and get the VTC and VNC planned, using a wiz wheel etc. Thank You!
AvPlan EFB has an Android version, as do most of the EFBs out there. I’d download one or two and setup a trial version and see which one you feel most comfortable with. Also chat to your flying instructor and see what they recommend you use, if you’re just starting out they might want you to get the basics down first before jumping into the EFB world so I’d check with them up front.

Just be aware Nelson that Garmin Pilot is not CASR 175 certified, so shouldn't be used as an EFB. OzRunways is (and actually was the first) so you can use that like paper.
AvPlan customer service is second to none. Evan could not have been more helpful.
Second that Damien, it's nice to have a software company that actually respond to requests hey?
And a HUMAN (Evan) actually answers the phone, i have subscribed also and in the first few hours of use, i'm impressed. its very intuitive.
@@damienmilk3025 I got Bevan - do all their names end in ..evan?
I enjoy that you’re human in your videos and not afraid to flub up your words. Keep on keeping on!
I use Oz runways.. excellent and very simple to use.

Ha that's very true... hmm, starts writing plan for 'Is Boeing better than Airbus?' video... 🤔
Then there’s those of us who get around in tailwheel biplanes with a paper WAC. Guess you could call us indecisive?
Easy answers (what is better)
OzRunways
Airbus
Low wing
Cessna
Cirrus
Both terrible
Melbourne
Awesome video! I’m about to start my flying lessons next week on Monday at Moorabbin Airport! This app will help loads! Thanks Stef!
General Kenobi you can even visit the AvPlan EFB team - our office is at Moorabbin Airport
Nice one mate.Very interesting.
Thanks for watching 👍
Hi stef, im a pilot, and love this kind of videos, I appreciate a lot if you could upload more of this!
Thanks Agustin, I appreciate the feedback and I'll try and make more of this style of video. Cheers, stef 👍
Stefan that sounds and looks like a great 👍 EFB however I am in the States and like you said I use Fore flight.
I use avplan when I am back in the States too!
Good Job bro.. I’m following your dream working on it to come to UK. Got PPL but still your videos helps a lot for planning

Thanks for watching Mr C
Canadian ForeFlight user here. It's slick!
My plane has an Aera 796 GPS and I have paper charts. It would take some doing to get lost. :-)
I almost want to travel to the US just so I can use Foreflight on an actual flight one day, I've heard such good things about it.
It isn't just the content. It's also the presentation. Mate, you could make watching paint dry interesting! 👍👍
*Writes script for '10 ways to watch paint dry' video* ... thanks nsw72, much appreciated as always, stef 👍

Hi Stef, I am sorry to do that but as a german I have to say this: KAPUTT is spelled like this! 😉 you are doing a Great Job!
Ha, and I should know that considering I was born in Germany hey? Apologies Stefan, I will get it right next time 😂
Stefan Drury Cool, where are you born and when did you leave Germany?
Thanks Stefan! Can you load the plan into ‘your’ Cirrus or do you have to re-enter it?

foreflight baby :))
I've heard great things about it, if I was flying in the USA I wouldn't be surprised if I used it.
do you use EFB as a log book?
Spontaneity plus. Fun.
Thanks Stefan
Thanks for watching Scotty.
Is there any alternatives to us with android systems. I just got in to flight school so Im pretty new to this :P
AvPlan EFB has an Android version, as do most of the EFBs out there. I’d download one or two and setup a trial version and see which one you feel most comfortable with. When are you going to fly yo ballarat?
I almost made it to Ballarat last week, plans changed at the last minute. Someday soon I'm sure, I wanted to check out Sovereign Hill.
Oh that sucks, sovereign hill is good for the first time you would enjoy it.
i use oz runway and Garmin pilot
thanks for that info.. meanwhile, "...making changes on the fly"

It's too bad it doesn't seem like Apple is going to release a new version of the iPad mini any time soon.
I agree... I think many pilots world over would jump on a Mini Pro! (Or whatever, just give us a new 8" tablet Tim!)
Yes this comment right here, I've been waiting for an update for years. The iPad Mini 4 was released in 2015 and no update since, surely they'd do well if they made a v5?
What's the Android alternative 😭 ??
classic cirrus pilot 7:23
I tried pulling the chute to slow the bike down as well but couldn't find the red handle...
There's nothing wrong with "Kaput". On the other hand, Australian adoption of the British affectation "Whilst" is not to be applauded :)
Rory on a Bike I say whilst too!
I’m 11 I’m in Australia are you in Australia I’m Victoria are you Victoria
