1:23 Parks radio telescopes etc. Hi Stefan, If not already, may I suggest at some stage you actually go check this place out. They have an interesting museum and cafe there too. Allow me to share a funny time I visited; 2015 whilst sojournying through three stes in my 1997 Super Roo outback (which I camped). After enjoying some time there I decided to have bruch there. The young Asian waitress came over to take my order. I ordered "Eggs Benny" but requested they only cook one of the two eggs, wrap up the 2nd one in tissue paper so I could use it next morning for brekkie while camped (Bacon & eggs but I'd run out of eggs!). Eventually she & the chef "got it", and I then had my fresh egg for next day.
Love the videos Stefan! It's always a struggle to find relatable Aviation content that captures the coolness of flying, especially in Australia!! Keep up the great work and safe flying for the adventure ahead. AOPA Australia Youth Ambassador
Thanks Karsten, that means a lot, I appreciate the kind feedback. I'm hoping to really ramp up the content and keep improving the style on this channel to help share more of the fun (and coolness!) of aviation and travel. So it's really great to hear you're enjoying it. Thanks again, Stef 👍
Trying to learn this stuff from scratch with X-Plane. It's not easy. Great to see an actual pilot working it out. It would be great if these charts were accessible online. Maybe they are?
Awesome, thanks for this, really enjoyed seeing the steps in your process. You have a great style, I understood everything you covered. I received my RPL at Moorabbin recently flying Warriors, starting the PPL course in October. Can't wait to get out of the training area.
Thanks Robert, I'm really glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the kind words. Best of luck with your PPL training, I did all my PPL training in a Warrior as well, love flying those planes. Cheers, Stef 👍
Hey Stef, thanks for that video ! It would be awesome if you could make a video that explains the main points of IFR, how you plan it in details, what does every letters and signs mean etc. I just passed my PPL flight test and now am considering doing my IREX but have literally no idea how it works ... thanks and blue skies :)
*and that information on the dish was super interesting, thanks for including that little detail. I was just halfway though reading 'An Astronauts Guide To Life On Earth' today. I recommend, it's a great book I think you'd enjoy!*
Hi Stef, great video thanks. I can't fly due to health reason so I aviate vicariously through your videos and the flight sim, Prepar3d. On your knee board, would you consider noting relevant VOR/NDB frequencies simply as a quick reference tool?
Hey Michael, sorry to hear that mate. Hope you’re able to get back up there someday soon. I don’t note the frequencies on my knee board as I refer to them on the actual approach plate itself. Reason being, when jotting them down there’s a chance I could incorrectly write the frequency down, if I read it direct off the plate I know it’s right. Cuts out the human error factor that way. Thanks for supporting the channel, cheers, Stef 👍
There seems to be a fair bit of planning involved with a flight like this although I suppose you get used to it. Just wondering if it would be easier to do the whole flight VFR. I would love to go on flight like this to get an idea on what's involved. I have been to Parke's observatory, very interesting place to visit. Looking forward to seeing you do this trip. Yes i have changed my profile pic.
Thanks Spiro, and yes that was just a tiny tiny part of planning one leg. That's why I've given myself a long lead time before the trip. It does become easier the more you do it, but I'm still going to run through the plan with my Instructor before heading out to have a second pair of eyes go over everything. Cool new profile pic, I love that plane! Cheers, Stef 👍
*0:05** could be the quote for my whole life* 😂😂 this was so helpful!!! Seriously, thank you so much, I'm studying for my IFR this Spring 2020. I've already taken the written, just got to get the flight portion done :)
Hi Stefan! It’s five years later that I’m watching this. Are you still using all that paper, or are you now doing everything in Foreflight or something similar? Cheers.
Hey Derry, I’ve got a post on my website with the template I use that you can download. Check it out here: www.stef747.com/private-pilot/navigation-flight-log-template-how-i-record-flight/
Hi, i have a question, if you are flying ifr and in the middle of the flight you change your flight plan to VFR, using the WAC chart ¿How can you know where you are? i mean is not it difficult to find yourself on the WAC chart?
You can plot your radio aid or GPS postion on the WAC chart to start - and then identify your key features out of the window from there. After that you concentrate on flying straight lines (i.e. maintining an accurate heading) and the time you have flown will give yo the distance you have travelled along that line and will show pretty much where you are - which you can confirm by looking out of the window and identifying the chart features again.
Hey Tim, I plan the RNAV approach that is most direct for me. Ie if I’m flying from the south, and the airport has a N/S runway, I’d plan the RNAV to the Northbound runway (less distance to fly). RNAV approaches normally have a straight-in and circling option, so if (in our example) we’re approaching from the south but it’s a southerly wind, you’d fly a circling approach to manoeuvre to the Southbound runway. Hope that makes sense.
According to the AIP in Australia, you need continuous 2-way radio communication to maintain IFR. So I believe HF can be used in lieu of VHF when outside of coverage. However, the Cirrus I fly doesn't have an HF radio, so that's not an option. So when we're outside of VHF coverage, IFR isn't an option. Hope that helps, Stef 👍
Stef....just wondering if you will be visible on my flight radar app.....😁. Even though the time difference between Oz and UK isn't too good I would love to try to spot you 👍😃
Hello Roy, for most of the legs I'll be flying under the Instrument Flight Rules in an aircraft with an ADS-B transponder. That means that on some flight tracking apps, yes you can follow the flights. The registration of the aircraft is VH-TDS, if you look it up and can see previous flights then you may be able to. Be great to have you following along!
Interesting stuff Stefan. Watched you with Jon and then subscribed to you. Very different to my flying and my channel but i will follow you with interest. All the best Tim
Hello Tim, thanks for subscribing, I've done the same with your channel. Yes ours are a bit different but that's a good thing, it's better we're not all the same here on UA-cam! I look forward to seeing more of your flying videos. Cheers, Stef 👍

Hey Stefan, I’m a fan of your flight planing sheet. Got a link to it at all if you don’t mind sharing?☺️

Stefan. Just completing my PIFR out of Tyabb, great background experiences on show ion yr videos. Keep up the great work
Thanks Derry, I was just at Tyabb with the PAC crew yesterday. Great group of pilots and a fun airfield to visit. Best of luck with your PIFR.
Stefan, I like the planning sheet in A5 format for the transfer of your Runways data onto your knee board, where did you download them from?
@@drderryrogers6021 I'd love to know too!
Hi Stefan. Have you been up too Gove ? Northern Territory and done the remote landings on the out stations ?

Hey Stefan,
Awesome videos mate. I would love a copy of your flight planning excel spreadsheet. It seems very simple.
Hi Stefan! It’s five years later that I’m watching this. Are you still using all that paper, or are you now doing everything in Foreflight or something similar? Cheers.
Brilliant vid!
Stefan, trying to find the planning sheet you used for yr kneeboard, is it from CASA or you made it, would love to use it for my IFR plans
Hey Derry, I’ve got a post on my website with the template I use that you can download. Check it out here: www.stef747.com/private-pilot/navigation-flight-log-template-how-i-record-flight/
Fascinating insight
Thanks Harry!
I've always taught it as the 7 P's, Prior Planning Prevents Probably P.... Poor Performance. :)
Ha yes, my instructor used to add another "P" in there as well!

Do you have a pdf/image of the Nav Log you are using? Would love to have something just like that!
Hey Tor, I’ve got a PDF copy you can download on my website here: www.stef747.com/private-pilot/navigation-flight-log-template-how-i-record-flight/
Stefan Drury, thanks alot!
Consider using ducking feature in a DAW (audio recording software) to duck out the music when your talking. To me it was distracting. Just saying.
it will be useful with subtitle
Bring extra (10 Glns) fuel for all those books you are carrying
Haha, yes there's a lot of weight in just the DAPs and maps! Thanks for watching, cheers, Stef 👍
