So typically anything that is deemed righteous and good in established abrahamic religion was subverted. so anything thats role was protection can be seen as suppressive from a gnostic lens

These guys really remind me of the Elite 4 from Pokémon. Four powerful bosses that you're forced to face all in a row directly before the final battle? Really did build hype towards the final fight as well.

Michael is easily one of the most intimidating bosses in the game. The first time he destroys you with a Charge + Sword Dance combo in a single turn, and then a Zealous Messenger cures him with a Recamdra, is something you will never forget

I swear I fought that last archangel for way too long. I got him down to critical health 3 times only for the angels to fully heal him. Yes, I know you're supposed to kill the angels quickly, but I got greedy charging up with Ryuji and Ann.
This is some final level. Looking at on how the city looks it kinda looks like it's the end of the world or something and your the only one to stop it otherwise everything is doom.
Yeah, they are just Shadows. It's a similar reasoning as to why the regular enemies looked like SMT Demons now; the cognitions of servants of a god being the famous Archangels is because of the images of them floating around in the collective unconscious. That's the point the game's trying to make; they may seem all high and mighty and larger than life, but they're just some silly shadows with a bit more power than normal that took those forms on to try and look important.
Nihil Ego I love this explanation, it makes perfect sense. I always curious as to why the shadows had a dark aura around them, but I that’s a good answer.
At last, let us continue the game. I watched a large section of a Persona 4 playthrough in the meantime. I gotta say, this dungeon feels eerily similar to Magatsu Inaba, and not just because both are red.
