The head unit* I bought: Color: 7862 256G 360 CAM
    s.click.aliexpress.com/e/_DcG...
*I am however not completely satisfied with this seller as he provided no instruction, not all wires are labeled and even though I ordered the 360° camera they didn't provide the calibration cloths needed to align the 360° cameras after install.

In this video I remove the only expensive option from my 2008 Porsche Cayman S, the PCM 2.1 navigation head unit to replace it with a relatively cheap Chinese aftermarket Android head unit. This may seem counter intuitive but the PCM system was not great in 2008 and it's not gotten better over 15 years. So, a new Android head unit is a major improvement to the car. Also, this Head Unit comes with a bezel that integrates nicely into the car's interior and it features knobs for volume and track selections.
In this video you can follow along on my troubles getting the unit installed. The installation should be the same for 987 generation Porsche Boxsters as well as 997 generation Porsche 911. My 987.1 Cayman has Sound Package Plus with the ASK Amp in the frunk. If your car has Bose an additional fiber optic box is required as on those cars the Bose amplifier is connected through MOST.
A head unit like this runs Android. Therefore apps such as Google Maps, UA-cam, Waze or Spotify can be installed and used directly on the device. It is also possible to connect a Smartphone for using Apple Car Play or Android Auto.

this is normally my first upgrade when I buy a used car. in fact, I base my purchase on how easy it'll be to install a new head unit. it really modernizes the vehicle. I hate that many modern cars make it so difficult to upgrade the head unit. planned obsolescence.

Already had the radio in my shopping cart before I went to look at the car and ordered it the day after purchase.

Congrats Mario, I didn't realise you bought the Cayman. But I do have issues with you buying a Chinese head unit...(was it planned).
Living in the Southern Hemisphere where we drive on the "right" side of the road (that being the left 😂) It would feel awkward changing gears...
Will now have to go through your channel to listen to what reason you gave to buy the Cayman. One of the cars I considered before buying my Quattroporte.

Cayman vs. Quattroporte - practically the same car. 🤣 Nonetheless, the Quattroporte is a car I regularly look up in the classifieds.

@@swisscarguy don't buy a Mazza... they're fun cars, but they chew through rubber faster than a prostitute.
PS, Almost 50 so I didn't want a two door coupe, and I needed a chiropractor after one sit in the thing (hard on side bolster of seat otherwise.

Just ordered one for mine as well. Black one as the trim in my .2 is black. Hope I can make it work as I am not as skilled as you are. Fingers crossed 🍀

Pretty decent for a head unit with modern functionality that integrates well into the car's interior, right?

Great video, seriously considering buying one. Who did you buy the brackets from? The link shows the files. Thanks.

I ordered from swiss3d.ch but any local 3D-printing shop should print those easily. Just make sure they are printed in ABS or ASA as those materials can withstand the high temperatures in cars.
By the way, I designed an improved version of the brackets (thicker and sloped) as in my car the radio would remain too loose: makerworld.com/en/models/427592

Hello, can you exactly ecplain how the amplifier can work. I think a lot of people have the problem. Would be great😊

You need to apply 12v to the red/black wire on the car's ISO connector (pin 2 of the connector). I did this by connecting it to the blue wire from the radio for the external antenna. I added a DuPont pin myself and installed it in the connector since that spot was empty anyway.

PCCM+ is three or four times the price, so I think it depends on the car, its value, and the owner's budget. Generally speaking, I think PCCM+ looks better, and should guarantee no loss of functionality, but this looks good and the price is right. The price differential may be slightly reduced if one needs a professional installer, because a Porsche dealer or specialist may bundle the cost of installation, which may make PCCM+ a little more competitive. As far as the beep, I'm sure that can be turned on and off, just like on a mobile phone, according to customer preference.
Personally, I'd probably spend the extra for PCCM+ in a 911 that effectively costs twice as much. But these aftermarket head units look pretty good in the 997/987 console design. However, IMO, they look far less good in the 996/986. But, PCCM+ is prohibitive for all but the most mint low-mileage 986s. It obviously doesn't make sense to put a $2000 PCCM+ in a Boxster that cost $4000, even a Boxster/Cayman that cost $10,000. And, of course, there is no PCCM+ for the ..7.2 cars, and probably won't be for another couple of years.

May I ask, why not PCCM Plus?

    • @swisscarguy
      @swisscarguy  7 місяців тому +6

The PCCM Plus is ~CHF 1600, this was 400 (I bought the highest spec one with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage). Also this runs a proper Android 10 where you can install whatever apps you like (like UA-cam). The PCCM Plus is a modified Android 6 that does not allow any apps to be installed (which is just as well since it's so out of date most current apps won't run anyway).
The PCCM is really just for using Carplay or Android Auto. The Chinese unit can do it as well but offers way more possibilities. Also, I think the Chinese unit looks better and has a slightly bigger screen at 8" vs. 7" on the PCCM+.
