  • Underoath - Three Thoughts on Christianity
For more than 15 years Underoath has been sharpening its fierce eloquence when it comes to pounding out the Christian-slanted hard rock that has earned the band a glowing global rep. Blending post-hardcore and heavy metal with a decent dose of screamo, the Tampa outfit featuring Aaron Gillespie and Spencer Chamberlain has moved from blustery broadsides like “I’ve Got Ten Friends and a Crowbar That Says You Ain’t Gonna Do Jack” to refined explosions such as those that dot their first disc in eight years, ‘Erase Me.’ The album hits hard. From “Bloodlust” to “I Gave Up” the band rails through a storm of sound. But that sound is no-longer associated with overt Christian perspectives. Chamberlain has told the press that they “couldn’t grow musically” under that banner, and once they let it go they “became healthy, happy....and were able to create again.” Our ‘Three Thoughts’ interview finds them amplifying that notion, with the guys questioning recent actions in the name of Christianity. “When you believe in the rules and not the reason [behind them], then you got an issue,” says Gillespie. Watch them shoot from the hip about the act of speaking truth to power.

I have the opposite experience when I went through depression and suicidal thoughts. No one else helped me except my brothers and sisters in Christ. No one else prayed for me or called me or brought me food. But above all that the Lord just spoke to me through His Word. He was my ultimate source of comfort and peace. I learned a long time ago that you’ll never find a perfect church with perfect people, and certainly not with me in it.

It's all in the same: God, Family, Church. Turning your back on one is the same as God & The Bible says a startling thing about a lukewarm faith: It tells us that God detests it. He even warns, “So, because you are lukewarm - neither hot nor cold - I am about to spit you out of my mouth” (Revelation 3:16). Does that sound harsh? It may at first - but remember: Jesus Christ left the glory of heaven and willingly shed His blood on the cross for us. He loves us that much! How can we remain indifferent to Him?
If this describes you, don’t despair. God wants to forgive you and draw you closer to Himself - and He will, as you repent of your sin and commit yourself without reserve to Christ. Begin a new journey with Christ today. Then get in a church where Christ is preached and lived, so you can continue to grow in your faith. You’ll never regret it.

It's very unfortunate that you guys have had such a negative experience with Christian community. This is why I get upset with some Christians in America. I've been a Christian for about 10 years and have seen how people who claim to be followers of Christ isolate themselves from people who they consider to be "sinners" That is such bullshit. When we look at the life of Christ, he wasn't hanging out with people who thought they were righteous but with the prostitutes, tax collectors, and people in poverty. I have had the privilege to be around an awesome Christian community for a number of years. I've seen the ways that people can be honest about their lives and be accepted with open arms. I pray that God will be placing genuine Christian's in your life. I think a good verse is Romans 15:7 "Therefore, accept each other just as Christ has accepted you so that God will be given glory." Thank you for your honesty!

Aaron is still somewhat Christian. He has stated on the Bad Christian podcast that he still prays and that he still believes in God, but it's more of a personal spirituality, and by definition agnostic, since he doesn't know that there is a God. Spencer is agnostic. One of the other guys is Christian, while another is an atheist. The rest are also agnostic.
Honestly, I see both sides of the argument. I think that Christianity as a modern religion is just spiritual materialism. If some movement catches on, there's at least ten books on Christianity with themes borrowed from that movement. If there's an app on meditation and mindfulness, there's an app where you basically contemplate scriptures with the sounds of rain or something else that you can find on a meditation app. I don't think this is a bad thing, but it just seems to me that Christianity is trying to keep up with the many fads and other odd things in the secular world, but it just seems insincere and ultimately contradictory in the end.
I don't hate religion or Christians. I tried to see if I could be a Christian, but I just don't buy all the supernatural and theistic stuff. I have looked at other religions as well, and I think that it's better for me to be a secular Humanist of sorts. I think of what would best best for me, and that's to be as good a person as I can be. I love people, animals, and this planet we all call home. The only way we can solve our problems is by cutting all the crap and banding together, rather than doing all this set trippin' that we're currently doing.

It's not the timechange that makes religion good or bad, it's the mindset you need to have to be religious which makes it bad overall. Sure it can be great for some people and did good things, overall in a modern society like you said, religion is pretty backwards thinking and not really being progressive at all. Modern times need modern way of living, a 2000 years old book on morals doesn't really work imo.

    • @AJ-me1dg
      @AJ-me1dg 3 роки тому +6

@@Th3Snipe I'd be curious to hear what mindset you think religious people all have. Have you read solid Christian thinkers like CS Lewis or Dostoevsky? I would argue that not all "progress" actually moves us towards where we need to be. If Jesus was the son of God, then there's nowhere to progress from him in terms of one upping him in some way. The progress that matters most is moral progress, and since we all have evil in our hearts, there's plenty of journeying to do.

What I'm trying to say is I think it's wrong to teach kids about god at such a young age. You don't let kids study quantum mechanics so why tell them everything we see and know and do is made and done by some sort of greater entity. Let someone figure out life how they want to instead of teaching them about some greater thing that controls their life in which case they're less likele to think about things themselves.
Science rarely came from deeply religious people because people who fill the unanswered question with god are not the ones looking for actual answers if you know what I'm trying to say.
Alot of horrible things happen due to religion because it's being thaught wrong to some, like in extremists ways. That's what I think is wrong with relgion, extreme believes ruin certain potentials.
TL;dr: I love everyone no matter what the believe in and I never meant to disrespect. All I'm saying is start teaching people about religion when they have a fully developed brain to comprehend the things religion tries to teach so anyone can make a fair choice in if they want to believe or not.

Yep, and I completely agree. It may not always seem like it, and it may be hard for some to understand, but other people's expectations of you can really lead you into a dark place if you don't balance the things that are truly important to you. In the context of Christianity, it seems like people expect perfection of you or they expect you to follow all the rules, question nothing, and uphold this image of being a good Christian. It's a lot to deal with, especially if you're already having a rough time and all you hear are people telling you what they think you did wrong. Even if it comes from a good place, it makes you feel like they don't actually care about you and that they'd rather focus on your wrongdoings and failures.
Organized religion in general tends be guilty of that, and it turns people away, even when it's not necessarily the belief itself that's wrong. It's some of the people around you and how they choose to apply their beliefs to themselves and others.

"Hey unloving, i will love you"
those lyrics they wrote themselves failed to materialize in the real world for them. i was a newborn christian in 10th grade over ten years ago thanks to Underoath. Then over time, i developed a distaste for how inconsistent the church was. So many denominations, so many different outlooks and mindsets. It became redundant to me. I was a methodist, then go to a baptist church and they felt more free, then attended a southern baptist (yes its different) and felt negative messages from the pastor.
christianity is a mess and i couldn't stay true. if i were to label myself, its agnostic. id one hundred percent love to devote myself to a creator, but its impossible if you aren't someone thats good enough and visually different as the general populus of christians are very judgemental. "general" is the majority. i lucked out during high school going to a backroads church where everyone were just farmers and joke cracking tobacco smokers, they loved us new kids coming in to church sunday wearing black. go to a church where the population isnt just 34 people and over 340, thats when you start realizing how judgemental and horrible the christian community is as a whole.

Church was held in the little New Port Richey's (A small town on the west coast of Florida, about 45 minutes north west of Tampa...) Seacoast theatre, built in the 1930s, I believe. Maybe even 20s.

Where did Jesus say to “love accept and care for others”? I agree we should love others, but the Bible defines that as telling them the truth regardless of the consequences. Which is exactly what we see the martyrs of the faith doing and being killed for.
I can give you chapter and verse for where Jesus actually said multiple times to judge, just not by appearance or hypocritically. Matthew 7:1-7 and John chapter 8. This “don’t judge, just accept everyone” Christianity isn’t biblical. Sorry, it’s just not. That is indeed Americanized, 21st century nonsense. Jesus sure won’t be doing that when He sends people into outer darkness. Don’t be a hypocrite is the exclusion. If you’re a drunkard you need to repent and not be trying to call someone else out. But if you aren’t a drunkard, you have every right as a Christian to hold your brother/sister accountable if they’ve fallen into drunkenness. Sounds to me like these Underoath dudes didn’t like that and/or experienced hypocrites so they are using that as an excuse to be their own gods...

American Christianity is a deeply flawed system. It has become less about the purity of doctrine and more about selling a product or idea and it has gone so far away from what the truth of scripture actually teaches. If you get enough people into a good thing eventually some of those people will figure out a way to commercialize it and capitalize on it until it becomes a bad taste in everyone’s mouth even though what is being sold by the same name doesn’t even resemble the original product to begin with. I recommend watching the documentary “American Gospel: Christ Alone”

Sure “Christianity” seems it’s about a good life & offers all great things. But Christ wasn’t all about that. He also spoke about how following him would mean that the work would hate us. And that speaking about him would would bring persecution. Christianity is no where near about living a good life although as the Bible says, it’s a gift from God to live one, it is more about putting our faith that Christ is the way to eternal life. A life in paradise. If you really don’t mind what happens after we’re gone. Then all this life doesn’t matter cause it would cease to exist. Then why would it matter? But if people keep living, even after death then why would it matter if we lived a happy life when you’d live one after, forever in heaven. disappointing, I'm a believer of 36 years; a former pastor of 20 years but prior to walking w Christ was a drug dealer and notorious "hell-raiser" until I was 25yo; It sounds and looks to me like you guys were "trying" to live the Christian life by assimilating into "Christian culture" instead of first becoming one with Christ through new birth by the Spirit as per ( Ezekiel 36:26-27, john 3:3, 1 peter 1:3-5; 23 etc.). put very differently, don't expect the church to understand you when you don't understand it. Sorry for your confusion but don't disparage the church when the truth is you don't understand God the Father, Christ the Son or their ways and purposes. And unless you are "born again by the Spirit of god you will never understand; see 1 Cor 2:14. Sorry fellas, but you just really don't understand "Christianity," and you can't blame that on the church.

I took a spiral down the old road of addiction, selfishness, and godlessness. Full turn, Christ has me in His hands. I’ll never forget the journey you brought me through, nor will I judge where the two of you are now. The flock is small, but the majority is not of the flock. Full heartedly knowing christ wouldn’t treat you like that breaks my heart. You did deserve more, and still do. Christ followers can take away from this and learn we all have our stains. It wasn’t wrong to point out the sin, but to not aid as a brother or sister was. Love you guys and continuing prayers for a future in Christ.

No doubt it is a painful experience. But if you truly want to rebel against what you feel is the established brand of Christianity that so hurt you. Forgive them. Nothing could be more enlightening for them to have this person they judged so harshly to show to them the Christ like attitude they themselves failed to exemplify. What could be more radical and more rebellious than that? To truly forgive them and show them Jesus love.

Some of the things Spencer mentions in other interviews is that UO has never had Christian lyrics, which long-time listeners can say that's a false statement. Also, Aaron released spiritual material through The Almost and his solo albums. Do I care if they're Christian or not? No. That doesnt define the quality of their music, it's just difficult believing true emotions when 1. I dont know then personally, and 2. I love underoath’s music but I totally disagree! I have always been encouraged to ask the hard questions as a Christian and a Christ follower and I have always been allowed to make my own mistakes. I’m sorry that so many closed minded Christians had to ruin the whole experience for these guys. But their songs seemed so overtly Christian it’s weird to see them do this. And Aaron even was at conferences speaking! It’s okay to have questions while staying grounded in what you believe in! That’s how we grow. And its okay to make mistakes because that’s where God’s grace comes in and that’s how he uses us to reach others, through the brokenness. I am perfectly aware that the band may never see this but It’s ashamed how no one was their to help them in their time of trouble and how it’s turned them away from faith! Many ppl go through life believing they are saved but at the end of the day they are just following a bunch of rules because that’s what they were taught. Coming to peace with what you believe and who you are in Christ is true salvation and I hate it that these guys never truly experienced that! Keep searching and I hope y’all find what y’all really believe and who you are! Much love ❤️

They've been on tour most of their lives. Have they ever been planted in a Church? Have they held membership at a church and been there every week to be fed the Word? Have they been involved in a small group or community group or bible study where a few in the church community get together and build off each other? A place where they can take their burdens to each other and encourage and uplift each other and help each other? Have they been in the Word daily to see what it actually says? Have they been in prayer groups where others can come alongside them in their burdens and life each other up in prayer? This is what the church community is and if you aren't a part of it how can you claim to understand? Have they ever reached out for help at all? More than anything, they just appear to be holding a straw man argument about something they really know nothing about. We live in a fallen world and like previous comments have mentioned, if you have a jerk you can't make him the shining light for all of Christianity. 21“Therefore, of these men who have accompanied us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22beginning from the baptism of John to that day when He was taken up from us, one of these must become a witness with us of His resurrection.”
23And they proposed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 24And they prayed and said, “You, O Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which of these two You have chosen 25to take part in this ministry and apostleship from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.” 26And they cast their lots, and the lot fell on Matthias. And he was numbered with the eleven apostles.
      "And they cast their lots"
This was always my favorite part in the Bible, when asked "why aren't you more like the Apostles" I tell people this verse and reply "I am, they walked with God in Human flesh and are still playing "Black Jack" to find the new Apostle" humans are stupid, that's why we need Christ.

Funny, I'm part of one of the largest churches in the US and none of that has ever come across. Our pastor isn't perfect and will tell people that normally, especially when he screws up. No one believes anyone is perfect or can be at my church, but we do strive for sanctifcation as we are called. My community at the church is what keeps me going and keeps me alive as they live life with me and know my struggles well. If I wasn't a Christian, I'd probably be dead.

You nailed it on the head! I was raised Catholic, and my biggest problem with it as I grew up and started to notice some questionable things was that people are only willing to accept you if you don't actually need acceptance. If your cat dies then everyone will pray for you, but if you get pregnant at 16 years old everyone looks down on you and casts you out in their eyes. This was a real thing that happened to a close friend of mine, and it was the turning point for me where I decided I was no longer Christian. I didn't want to be a part of that. It's all about selling an image of purity. From my experience of the church, everyone wants to believe that if you trust in god and follow his plan then everything is all smiles and sunshine. But isn't that the exact opposite of what it should be? There's a whole concept of humans being human that the church talks about all the time, yet when it comes down to a real-world scenario of a human making a human mistake, they're treated differently. If there is a god, then he knows that humans can never be perfect beings. People get hurt and people act according to their own will, that's just what being human is. It should never be about only allowing the perfect into a place of perfection, but that's what it's become. It should be about a perfect god helping those who can never have that perfection. I don't know that I believe in any god, but I know that I certainly don't believe in the golden calf that modern Christianity has created.

Something Spencer keeps saying is "you're not allowed to talk about these issues in a Christian band". Isn't that an issue between Spencer and the rest of the band opposed to Spencer and Christianity?
Most of what they've said here I agree with...but I feel like they're playing both sides intellectually dishonestly. I know for facts that many many many Christian fans tried to be uplifting to him when he struggled. I know a guy who gave Spencer his phone number and told him to call if he needs something. Back then you'd see Christians always saying they pray for him to overcome and everything a FAN is SUBJECTED to do within the confines of a celebratory figure. I was one of them. But he decides to pick the assholes as an example.
Most Christians probably wouldn't have plastered your face as an example on a magazine cover. So why does that assholes actions who did it weigh more the the actions of those that wouldn't have done it..or rather didn't do it?
Oh and in the Bible God, 9/10, never had an issue with being questioned.

Megachurches with prosperity gospel, God-is-your-divine-vending-machine and we always-smile-here type of things are ... FAKE. I encourage Aaron (who years ago wrote the forward to my friend's Christian book) to look wholeheartedly into the WORD OF GOD (the Bible) and once again, find Jesus there. Currently, I'm two years in to something I never thought I'd be at: a home church where we eat together, talk about life, support one another and are AUTHENTIC.

It's so lucky that I never see any Christian who believes God has a different standard than themselves.
The way in which one interprets the Bible is merely a reflection of who they are, and has nothing to do with God.
These guys are clearly saying they don't want to be publicly associated with such a reactionary and uncurious group of people.
And no interest in making things better, not for anyone, but especially not in their own community.
You can tell a Christian about your issues with things you see broadly across Christianity today, and rather than examine some of the problematic things, they'll throw their fellow Christian under the bus.
"Oh, sweetie, those aren't real Christians."
Wow, what an easy way to slip out of having to make any improvements among yourselves!
And how dare they presume to know what is in someone else's heart anyway?
Life would be scary if we all realized we have no good reason to believe there's anything waiting for us when we die. Then it makes life that much more important to not procrastinate. When you don't think you can kiss and makeup in heaven, you make sure you make things right before time runs out.
There are plenty of ministers out there who have ceased to believe, but some people find that religion "isn't for me, I'm above that, but for some of these lower people, helps keeps 'em in line."
Although I don't think I'd be fair in painting ministers with that brush, their experiences vary so widely.
But yeah, it's just difficult to get many Christians to engage in honest conversation and the church has already poisoned the masses against atheists to where they think they have a rough idea of what's going on with any given atheist, but quickly show they don't have a clue, and that they are not interested in learning.

All of us are train wrecks. All of us are wicked. It’s okay to ask questions. It’s okay to seek truth. As a Christian I have no fear that you seeking truth will cause you to leave Jesus because I’m confident in who Jesus is and what it all means. I’ve been heavily surrounded by non believers in my leave, people that actively mock Christianity in fact and never once has it made me want to cast shame on them or throw hatred back their way. I don’t think it’s what Jesus would do or did do. Anyways, everyone’s journey is their own, there will always be ups and downs and until the day we die we will always face challenges and struggles as God continues to press us with things he knows we cannot conquer alone, we need Jesus to get through it all. But at the end of the day, everyone is out here just doing their best and trying in the only ways they know how. Be good to one another, try your best to guide people to Jesus but do not be forceful or casting hate on those that are resistant, that will literally never work.

I was also surprised when the band members in their Bad Christian podcast interviews talked about thier own personal struggles and drama in both their own lives and with each other as well as with Christianity.

Not once did these guys speak about their individual relationships with Jesus. Which is what is meant to separate the relationship from the “religion” They threw it all away due to how they were treated and threw the baby out with the bath water. Who cares how an individual feels about you if they are judging you for things that aren’t true. Walk away from that, separate yourself from those. Call them out for being fake Christians and carry on in your faith. Its true the worlds path is WIDE - it’s easier to go down your own path and be excepted by the world. It’s much harder to walk the Jesus path. This is just sad man, I loved Underoath. But, in the end it's your choice, and you only have two brother. Life, or death, and I seriously recommend you seek help choosing life and that can only be found in one place man as you should've known, and that's in Jesus Christ my friend. God bless you all who may read this...

Yeah, I agree. I went to a Christian college full of hurt and anger for what I experienced growing up in church(mainly my highschool years), and I was ready to be all like: "Screw Church, Screw Christianity" after I heard some haunting statistics about church youth. I wiill personally admit that if it weren't for someone lovingly and relentlessly reaching out to me in love...I would be in that same position as well. Feeling like no one cares and feeling overlooked.
I personally hope I can help other people with church hurt if I ever do encounter someone like that.

I stopped going to church for years for this reason but remained devoted to Jesus (not religion, just devotion to Him). Recently He led my wife and I to move and when we arrived at the new location, He prompted us to go to a specific church there and everything sorta fell into place. I'm now the drummer for the church etc. and I wasn't even looking for a place to play drums, in fact I hadn't played drums at all in over 5 years prior to this. These people also were exactly what I was looking for: Jesus without the religion. I want to encourage others to do the same. You don't necessarily have to leave the church you're in, but ask Jesus honestly where you should be and do whatever He says. It may be to stay where you're at, it may be to go to a different church. It may even be to not go at all until he leads you somewhere else.

thats the reason i had to take a break from my attempts at being a christian after years of finding God. i thought i had found Him at one point, until the church i held so close to my heart told my mother she wasn't allowed to attend service anymore due to her mental illness. She had a stroke in 2007, prior to that was the choir director as well as helped dicate bible school and thursday night bible studies for the teenagers and kids. unfortunately, the stroke left her without a filter and during service while sitting in the choir would take her medication or just whisper to the person beside her random comments that made no sense.
sounds annoying, yes. but my mother was a huge component to this church, she brought all kinds of children to the church primarily made up of elderly folks.
but no, the new pastor who could care less of her contributions to the church that hadn't met her prior to the stroke, invited her to a hospital lobby and told her not to show her face at the church ever again. EDIT: there was no communication prior to this in terms of asking my mother if she would be willing to try and keep her comments to herself or anything of that nature. just flat out, SEE YA.

Hey@@phylazen5649 reading this I am very sorry that this is how you experienced christian religion. It is understandable how you are standing with christian churches when being rejected to the face like this.
I hope that you will continue on your journey towards salvation even if human beings have the ability to either attract or terribly detract from God in most devious ways.
Essentially everyone of us is called to reflect Christ and that is why when people don't live up to their calling and do even the opposite, that they end up doing even more terrible damage.
My hope for you is, find the narrow road.
      God bless.

What is enigmatic to me is Spencer sharing how Christians have not been there for him or willing to struggle with him while a Christian is sitting right next to him being there for him and willing to struggle with him. Spencer, not everyone who professes to know Christ knows Christ, I suspect you've met many of the hypocrites Jesus was crucified by. Your focus on the institution of Christianity leads me to presume that you haven't met Him; when you have met a physical person you cannot then unmeet them, you may hate them or ignore them but they do not vanish. The devil himself knows the Lord, he's simply in opposition to Him. I am speculating that you've merely become acquainted with an institution that poorly represents Christ and I hope you come to know Jesus the being Himself; the Savior who has taken our sins on Himself and paid our debts, the God who suffers for His wayward children and knows your suffering deeply. You are loved, in the midst of all this hardship you have been through, you are loved and Christ is calling for you. Repent and believe the Gospel of Jesus, be still and know Him, find life in Him, then go out and love as He has loved you; maybe a few hypocrites will also meet Him and join you. May the Lord bless you.

Sometimes, I can't blame on what Aaron and Spencer says! Because it's true. Sometimes Christian are more rude and not caring to their fellow brothers in Christ👌...So what they say about the church, is really true. For me, they only say that it's because on what they see in their church during their Christian walk..

As a Christian, I'm sorry no one loved you enough to reach out with the love of Christ to meet you were you were and help you in a practical way. While the truth should always be spoken in love, there is a time and place. Telling everyone you meet they're going to hell will not make them want to give their life to Jesus. And you most certainly cannot argue someone into the kingdom, that never works. The best you can do is show them love by the way you interact with them and evangelize when the time and circumstances seems to "magically" line up. For me, I was all the way into my early 20s, living for my own pleasure and sinful ways. But then I found myself being drawn back to church. Maybe I liked the company or how I felt when I left church on Sunday - happy, carefree. But I didn't find religion and rules, or not in the legalistic sense. I found a Savior, who gave me hope when I had none, purpose, a future. I found Jesus. Then my life began to change. All the sinful habits began to drop one by one. It wasn't some miraculous overnight process either. It was gritty, ugly, and took some time. I would stumble and fall but God was always there. He set me free of all the chains I had binding me. Sexual Immortality, pornography, filthy speak, addiction. He did that, not me. I tried to free myself and I couldn't. But He is able. And when you find Jesus, not religion, the commandments become something you keep because you love God, your neighbor, and yourself, not because you're looking at it from just a right and wrong stance. Am I perfect? Not at all, but each day is another opportunity to continue to put my Faith and trust in Jesus that the work He started in me, he will see it through to completion, that it has always been about Him and will always be about Him. That there's nothing worthy of salvation within me but Christ, my hope. Each year I get a little older, a little wiser, and a little more like Jesus. I'm not the man I was, praise God. And I'm not the man I'm going to be when I see our creator face to face. But thank you Jesus he works within me to shape me slowly into His image. And unlike us, He has more grace and mercy and love than we can ever imagine. So when stumble and fall, we can look to God as loving father who wants to restore us, not shake his finger at us and say "I told you so" I sincerely hope you give Jesus a try, not rules and regulations or religion. Jesus said take up your cross and follow me, not man. But what you can do is follow me as I follow Christ. God bless those who read this and feel like there might just be hope out there. He's only a prayer away.

Yup! I get annoyed when people think that "as a Christian, you're not allowed the question the church" or whatever, when the opposite is true. In questioning one's beliefs, any beliefs, truth usually arises.

Basing your faith on people instead of Christ is the problem, God always finds a way. I’m sorry to hear that you guys have had a bad experience with those around you in the Christian community.....but blaming people is your first mistake,....as Aaron Weiss says, God is love and love is real. Try basing your faith on Christ, you do this by seeking him daily. And don’t get me wrong, there are Christians out there that give our faith a terrible name, Jesus said the greatest commandment is to love God and love people and that’s what we should do. But when you earnestly seek Him, He will send you amazing people, I can testify to that.
God bless you guys and God bless Underoath, love your music...always have, always will!

What I can’t stand about all of this nonsense is that a band who made their through the music world for the most upon a “Christian” music label is seemingly throwing rocks at the people who loved them? I mean I understand that there were people in your circles who acted a huge nasty ASS, but what about us...the ones who still love you regardless of where you are? It seems like they’ve white washed all of their “Christian” fans in such a way to gain new ones... I never saw a “tweet”, FB post or even a message on the MySpace wall asking for the prayers of the saints to help through a broken marriage, struggles with drugs or whatever. I never got the message, but you bet your bottom dollar I’d have prayed sincere prayers asking for the love and mercy of God. I’m not self righteous because I know that there are plenty of us who have lived through, for lack of a better phrase, the toughest shit ever. But it because I have held on to Christ though I’ve run out of tears that I can pray for them. I hope UO reads this, because I feel like you all left us and now sneer at every given opportunity at your day 1 people. Some didn’t come just because of the music. Some of us actually love you just the way you are, but the jeering is tone deaf. I could be wrong. That’s what hurts the most because I am conflicted. My resolve is a little saying the J.R.R. Tolkien once wrote in Lord of the Rings: Not all who wander are lost. Praying for your very best no matter where you go.

I love there approach to this. I also had similar bouts with Christianity. It caused me to question a lot of stuff in my college years. In the end it reaffirmed my faith, but changed a lot of the things I previously thought about it and scripture in general. Religion can do a number on people since it is run by imperfect people. A lot of it is not what was intended, but got messed up. I'm glad these guys got out from under oppressive religion. I hope God is still on the table for them, but I totally respect and see where they are coming from. For each of us the journey there is different.

I’m a Christian and I agree with what’s said in this. Like, it’s sad how religious a lot of Christians are, thinking you shouldn’t ever question things, thinking you shouldn’t be honest, and giving other Christians, especially ones that have platforms like being in a band or even being like a youth leader or pastor, judgement(comparing them to God like they’re not human) instead of sympathy.

As a Christian, I had similar experience. I felt so hopeless and useless, and on top of that I was surrounded by judgemental people and was afraid to be who I am. But when you focus on God and Jesus rather than people, you start to understand that God made you perfect and gave you free will to choose. Organised religion is evil and controlling. Christianity isn’t religion, it’s a relationship with God. We shouldn’t look at Christianity through people, but through the Bible. People interpret the Bible the way they like and a lot of the times it’s wrong. I understand what Aaron and Spencer went through but I do pray for them and I hope they both find peace and rest. God heals and He knows your struggles and needs.
