- As its name implies, the GFAS-X1 Destroy Gundam is built for only one purpose: massive destruction. Nearly three times larger than an average MS, it can destroy an enemy mobile suit by simply stepping on it. To accomplish its goal of mass destruction, the unit is equipped with a large array of weapons that allow it to singlehandedly devastate a large city like Berlin or take out an army of mobile suits and support crafts. Its designation, "GFAS-X", stands for "Gressorial Fortress Armament Strategic - EXperimental".
Despite its large size, the Destroy Gundam requires only a single pilot unlike its predecessor, the YMAG-X7F Gells-Ghe. However, the pilot has to be a Biological CPU or someone with similar enhancements. The Destroy Gundam is classified as a transformable mobile suit, and usually launches in its MA mode which hovers over the ground at low altitudes through the use of backpack mounted thrusters. It can transform into MS mode by rotating its lower half 180 degrees, lowering the arms and flipping the backpack to the back.
The suit's backpack is equipped with three weapons, including two twin barrel high-energy beam cannons, 20 thermal plasma composite cannons mounted around the backpack's circumference, and four 6-tube multipurpose missile launchers. Other weapons include head-mounted 200mm energy cannon and four 75mm CIWS, three chest-mounted 1580mm multi-phase energy cannons, and two detachable arms each equipped with a beam cannon and 5-barrel hand beam gun. The detachable arms function like DRAGOON Pods, allowing the suit to attack its target at any range, regardless of obstacles standing in the way. Aside from its vast array of offensive weaponry, the Destroy Gundam also carries defensive equipment in the form of three positron reflector shields, one in the backpack and usable only in MA mode, and two on the detachable arms.
Due to its bulk, the Destroy Gundam has poor mobility and serves more as a movable gun platform. This weakness is often exploited by enemy units, particularly high mobility mobile suits piloted by ace pilots, to take the Destroy Gundam down by closing in and using close combat beam weaponry. Alternatively, DRAGOON Pods armed with beam spikes (such as the large DRAGOON Pods of the ZGMF-X666S Legend Gundam) can penetrate the Destroy's Positron Reflectors and quickly tear through the machine.

The Destroy Gundam started out as a Boss and ended up becoming the "Boss once you Unlocked him"
Tragic.
More like boss doesn’t bother to change tactics. The Destroy only knows how to do one thing and once everyone knows it, it’s an easy boss to deal with.
It has a crippling weakness to melee weapons, since its shields don't stop their propulsion. Anti-ship swords have a massive physical component and are propelled by their wielder MS, which allows them to push through the shields, and beam sabers are the same but to a lesser extent (they lack the mass of the ASS-type swords' big chunk of metal behind the blade, but they're still being propelled by the MS that wields them). And Legend's two big DRAGOON units have beam spikes, making them basically jet-propelled bayonnets; they can just power through the shield. End result is that it stops beam weapons & unpowered kinetic projectiles just fine, because they waste their momentum on a shield they can't penetrate, but anything that can just add _more_ momentum after hitting the shield can power through it; they don't stand up to sustained pressure. (For a _DBZ_ comparison, they could tank a Spirit Bomb because it would hit the shield, push a bit, and explode, but a Kamehameha would just keep pushing until it pushes through the shield.)
Add to this that it's big and slow, and thus has problems with small, agile powerhouse units (like most Gundams), and that its armament & defenses are split between its two modes (it can't use the forehead shield or backpack long-barrel cannons in MS mode, and can't use its CIWS (anti-missile machine guns -that are mainly just there to spark uselessly against PS Armor- ) or the chest & mouth blasters in MA mode), and it's a very flawed platform that only really functions as a moving turret and red-shirt killer. Sure, it can use its arm guns & shields in either mode, and the 20 beam guns on the backpack's rim don't care which mode it's in, but that's not much. It's designed to kill its target from an extreme distance with its howitzers, first and foremost; it only really has an MS mode -as an homage to the Psycho Gundam- to try to defend itself against anything that gets too close to aim the big guns at, and that's a weakness that a fast suit with any half-competent pilot can _easily_ take advantage of. (Especially since the chest guns don't have an anti-beam coating and don't handle damage all that well, and the cockpit seems to be surprisingly unarmoured for something of that size. Not only do self-propelled and melee weapons punch through the shields, the mecha's entire torso is a big honkin' weak point they can hit for massive damage!)
Really, the underlying issue is that a weapons platform like that is supposed to be escorted by a squad of smaller, more agile fighters to defend it. It's not fast enough to reliably land a hit on something as fast as Freedom, Impulse, or Destiny, and also has a big glaring weakness to speedy units like them, so it should be surrounded by a whole host of Windams equipped with Jet and/or IWSP Striker Packs, and not just Neo & the fireworks squad. Just think of it like sending a bomber deep into enemy territory, without a fighter squad to dogfight the enemy fighters that want to shoot it down, and the Destroy becoming useless the instant they figure out how to take down the first one makes a ton of sense.

The Destory Gundam act as a giant weapons platform. It has almost no ability to engage in melee. Its basically build to wipe put bases or in this case, cities.
Compare him to the Sword Strike, Forbidden, Exia, or Ahead Sakigake, all these suits and purpose build for melee range, just look at their weapon sustems.
In Freedom, the Destroy just got more nerfed to the point it was patchwork

お腹が弱いってバレちゃったから・・
映画で2週間限定でやってたスペシャル・エディションで見たんですけど、ステラ機はまだ強そうな感じだったのが、それ以降がやられ機体みたいにやられていって驚きましたww
まぁ、デストロイは遠距離攻撃向けの機体で接近戦の事は一切考えられていないみたいですし…
そもそもデストロイ撃破できるパイロットなんて数人しかいないので…だからコンパスが過労状態なんですね

この機体だけで無双して戦争を終わらせられた
ステラが操作していたデストロイマジ圧倒的でザフト軍を蹴散らして都市を焼け野原にしていましたが、シンがデスティニーがヘブンスベースでデストロイを圧倒的に蹴散らしていきました。デストロイを倒せるのはデスティニー、インパルス、ストライクフリーダムぐらいですかね。
最新のSEED freedomでもコンパスのメンバー以外誰も倒せない強MA

熟練MS乗りが随伴してこそのデカブツであって、手練れのMA解体検定持ち相手には単騎じゃ基本的に無力なのよね。

It really was scary when they first used it. Kira kind of figured out how to fight it and yeah turned into a chump especially after their best pilot was also killed with it. I never got the logic in Shin being mad at Freedom when Neo broke his promise to him, but Seed Destiny other than GIl didn't make a lot of sense.

This was just made for general suppression against conventional forces, who don't have units with high mobility or the skills to get in close. As soon as Ace pilots shows up they start to drop like flies. To think that the positron reflector protected the unit from all ballistic and energy based attacks, yet have no effect against a beam saber.

Wouldn't say totally nonexistent. While not specifically used in this manner, the hands are fairly fast moving, both of them together can easily crush an MS by clapping together. Then of course, it goes without saying that it can flatten anything that dares to get underfoot

Kira totally shot himself in the foot here. If he hadn't drifted into view, Stella wouldn't have panicked, and if he hadn't subsequently killed her, Shinn wouldn't have righteously kicked his ass at Operation Angel Down.
Additionally find it funny that next time we see the Destroy an entire squad is easily getting their asses kicked. Which retroactively makes Kira attacking the original because it was about to fire pointless, since Shinn literally tanks a Destroys triple beam head on with his shield.
Also couldn't help but notice for the initial Destroy, there were only maybe 3 or so instances of reusing animations, and all pretty minor. From what little I know thats pretty darn good by Destiny standards.
Stella has to die, that's just the fate of most characters voiced by Kuwashima Houko, the death flag lady.

Are you sure? The power requirements for the propulsion systems and the fire rate of that ludicrous weapons array (most of which are energy weapons) basically demand nuclear power, even with the crazy power plants and super-batteries available in this universe. My reasoning is that the Minerva and Archangel are both lower tonnage because of the internal hangar space and use their energy weapons sparingly. The increased mass of the Destroy means the propulsion systems require more energy. As for the weapons, think about how many kinetic guns and missiles each ship fires. The Destroy basically fires every energy weapon several times per minute. Those Quad canons are portrayed as equivalent to the Positron Canons aboard the Minerva and Archangel. The array of beam weapons around the saucer OTK mobile suits, so they have to be at least as powerful as the Archangel's main guns (the green beams above the catapults). The Phase Shift armor and the magnetic deflector that bends incoming fire are both very power-hungry systems. On top of that, physics demands those shields have an output equal to anything they can stop.
Don't forget, the Earth Forces have had N-Jammer Canceller tech since before the beginning of this series. La Cruse had Flaye deliver that directly to the Earth Forces Admiralty near the end of Seed. As I recall, they attempted 2 mass nuclear strikes. The first was foiled when Kira aided ZAFT to shoot down all the missiles in Seed. And the second was Uno Reversed with the deployment of the Neutron Stampeder during Destiny.

@@IlijaNenadović Common misconception. Nuclear reactor melts down, as in heats up and turns to molten metal. A runaway nuclear reaction exploding is not possible with modern nuclear reactors. Space age ones would be even better and safer.

For all its power, the Destroy has NO true close range options for close combat, this is why Sting and Neo escorted Stella’s Destroy.
Not only that but Stella was outright stated to be the Destroy’s most suitable pilot so it stands to reason that Sting wouldn’t be as good a pilot as Stella, let alone the pilots of the other Destroy’s seen. Another point is that post-Stella, every Destroy was engaged by not only ZAFT’s best mobile suits in their entire army but they were piloted by ZAFT’s best pilots who also had first-hand knowledge of what the Destroy’s were capable of.
Shinn, during the battle against the EA’s main base (I think, I can’t remember the name) was piloting a mobile suit that was practically the perfect counter to the Destroy while on the moon, Rey had weapons that outright ignored the Destroy’s defences.
So in conclusion, the Destroy was made out to be a joke because after its debut, it had everything going against it. But if allowed to operate in its element. It will more than live up to its name.
It became a joke simply because they wanted shinn, rey and lunamaria to look cool and it continues to be that way in freedom, it's not that complicated

デストロイはビーム、メガレーザーによる砲撃特化型だから懐に潜り込まれたら成す術無しで攻略法自体はすぐに確立されたけど
それはガンダム達がどいつもコイツも化け物ばっかだからなし得たのであって
まずそもそもあの雨みたいな量のビームを掻い潜って奴の懐に潜り込む正規ルートが無理ゲー過ぎるのですが・・・。

こんなのが種自由までに最低5機は存在してたのに製造元が壊滅してなお各地で見かけるの世紀末してて草なんだ

全てを無にするデストロイ。それはある意味清浄といえる。それも平等に。争いや遺恨さえも。
巨大モビルスーツとしてトップエース以外歯が立たないデストロイはカッコいい。近接格闘としてビームアックスやサーベルを装備してたら腕に伸縮自在な実体剣も。
タイプ2としてヤタノカガミかフェムテク装甲のデストロイなど。さらに機動力向上した。
ビグザムとサイコガンダムのあわせ技ってやべえよ。。。
連合の作ってビグザム兼サイコガンダムなんだけども大暴れ。インパクトはほんとにすごい。そしてフリーダムの時点でこんだけやれてるキラよ。ライフリのシールドがあればバックパックを一瞬で切り落とせるようになってるから恐ろしいわ。

それはあるかもしれんけどブーメランが簡易ドラグーンとはいえ本物のドラグーンはシンには向いてないんじゃないかな。
空間認識能力自体はあるだろうけどキラのストフリのドラグーン対応しきれずにくらってたし機体制御しながらドラグーン操作するのはシンの戦闘スタイルに多分合ってないし向いてないから扱いきれないと思う。
これが量産機の時点でヤバいよね

You are correct. It should have been a more important antagonist machine. Instead it was just another weak grunt. It's still one of my all time favorite Gundams though.

今でこそ攻略手段が明確になって、多少マシにはなるが、初めて登場した時のインパクトが凄まじい。
Man seeing the Freedom take down the Destroy Gundam like that reminds me of the Biblical story of David vs. Goliath where a boy fell a giant now isn't that considered ironic as the Destroy Gundam is a monster of a mobile suit and the very first one was taken down by a boy who was once just a student at a technical college who went on to become the Cosmic Era's greatest hero.

効果音以前にリフレクターのエフェクトも出てないですよ。
そもそも背面にリフレクター発生機無いですし。
第一、リフレクター展開出来ているなら直撃受けた反動でよろけたりしないです。
あと、確かにリマスター前でも常時リフレクター展開みたいな解釈はありましたが、あれはMA形態限定の話。
