Full Coolant System add on Complete! Harbor Freight 4x6 Saw MOD. Part 2

- Опубліковано 2 жов 2024
- This week we finish up the Harbor freight coolant system mod and I couldn't
be happier with the way it turned out. It was a really fun and worth while project IMO . Everything was made from parts setting around the shop other than the pump . I really like the way it keeps all the chips contained that would otherwise be all over the floor. Consider supporting Steve Summers UA-cam channel

It's always nice to have someone else put the first dent in...
Not one, not two, but three (Wife, son, dog) supervisors in the shop...
Thank you for your noted kindness to all animals in so many of your videos. Not many would stop their journey and walk back to remove a little creature from the road to possibly prevent it from being hurt or killed. You folks are a credit to the species! Shop looks great too, btw.
Just remember if you help out a turtle you have to move them in the direction that they are traveling as Steve did.
I saw a box turtle just like that in my driveway last week. But it ran off by itself. They can move pretty good when you're not looking.
I have the same harbor freight Band saw I hope I can do the same Mod you did thanks for sharing
Love the soldering the screen on, I forget about using to affix parts together. Thanks for sharing!
Drop a largish Neodymium magnet in the bottom of those oilers... makes them less "tippy" on machines.
Glad to see the turtle getting some help.
I didn't know I needed a turtle break, until I had one.
maybe your sheet metal bending jig is a tiny bit over the top?
When the shop has turned out so nice that the entire family comes to hang out 😁
Nice one Steve!
Now all that’s left waiting for is the DoAll saw ;)
Hopefully, that won't be the last. I'm a confirmed watcher and want to watch Steve and his family do things like this for years to come. Shoot, he may be watching some of his neighbor Jonathan W videos and decides he want to have steam powered tooling. Or, maybe he'll do a video(s) with Jonathan making some parts needed for his steam engines.
Yeah really miss the DoAll saw restoration videos!
@@flick22601 Oh no, you may have misunderstood me :) I am looking forward to Steve exploring new things! But the DoAll is unfinished business and I feel like he’s teasing us 😎
@@mumblbeebee6546 - I must have. Sorry.
@@flick22601 Crikey, no need to apologise :)
Here’s to sitting back with a hot beverage and watching the Summers family work! ;)
Nice mod. I plan on doing the same with my Carolina. Thanks for sharing with us.
Its got to feel really good to be able to start using your equipment again! After all those months of hard work its going to pay in aces in your projects!
Can't wait to see what you come up with next.
Morning Steve! If you have an old speaker, take the magnet out and put it in the bottom of your tank. You'll be suprised how much metal will get past the filter.
Everyone had a tortoise when I was young 60 s 70 s but I don’t see them now what’s happening
@5:01 looks like Elizabeth has her purse and is ready to go somewhere... Steve is working feverishly to get done with the project so they can leave.
Instant thumbs up for saving the tortoise
That is one good looking shop
Little late for this one but we have had one of those saws in actual production for over 30 years (on it's 2d motor, 3d set of worm wheels, and 3d set of wheel bearings. I don't know how many guide rollers we have been through)
At any rate, I basally did the same catch pan and water set up as Steve's like 25 years ago, but the best thing I ever did was to scrap the flimsy factory legs and make a stand that puts it at the same level as our Powermatic vertical. Fact is we have them next to each other at the end of the stock rack and we use the P'Matic as the infeed table for the HF horizontal. (Also a 12" extension on the in feed AND outfeed side doesn't hurt a thing.
Mymajor point here is I have no idea why the horizontals are always set up so you have to stand on your head to use them. They are all made that way. - Monkey see. Monkey do I guess. Bringing it up to the level of other machine tools makes all the difference in the world when you are trying to get parts cut to an accurate length. There are other little mods but the first thing to do is get it up to
One more thing we added a few years ago is a hydraulic downfeed damper. Between the water and the hydraulic we get a good 5 times the blade life in 4140 prehard and can carry +/= .015 all day long. Take it from Steve and I both. Don't sell these little HF saws short, especially with water and an add on Hydraulic. - A 6-10 Bimetal and Rust Lick coolant and you can cut anything from 4" alloy round bar to 2x2x1/4 A-36 angle all day and all night long.
Beautiful mod. Still think it could be a kit or at least a set of plans. :-D
Talk about synchronicity I just got the same saw you have three days ago.winky just started selling his upgrade height plate yesterday and now you’re showing me how to finish up my coolant system.
Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos many of the things you do are very helpful to me
Winky's Worshop is selling the plates.
Hi Steve, I put a second nozzle to wash the blade straight after the cut, it stops the blade from dragging chips through the machine. I like how you cut the copper to go over the blade, will have to modify mine as it seems to better control the flow of coolant. Regards from Oz
Been meaning to do that to ours for years,,,wounder if I will actually get it done. ,,,, The little wire brush wheels are neat too,,,,,But I don't think I will ever get that done either.
Turned out nice,
I orderd one, but had to dent it my self.😒
Excellent video, thank you
Great bandsaw upgrade. That double filter system will make the coolant system last a lifetime.
And if I ever buy a sheet metal bender, I'll try to find one that comes with an integrated shaper, like yours.
It's great that the shop is so nice now the family comes to hang out with you while you work :)
I move box turtles to the other side of the road too. Sandhill Cranes will be heading south in a few months. A welcome relief from the heat wave. Greetings from Bloomington Indiana.
👍
Have you thought of raising that saw up a bit? Some day you'll bend over as far as you do and not be able to straighten back up! Maybe 4" square-tube runners with another 4 or 5" from better (lockable) wheels?
Question of the day. - Why are all horizontal band saw built so you have to stand on your head to use them?
I have one of these saws , it's a beauty, cuts about a square inch per minute, so that most times you dint have time to scratch your arse before it's finished. I use a cheap aquarium pump and plastic tubing ( cheap as chips) . I put a magnet in a ziplock back and leave it in a plastic tray. It's a bit of a Heath Robinson setup but it does a good job. I wish I had your patience and attention to detail but you need folk like me to set the bar low enough that anyone can have a go!!!
Stavros
You should see the chip pan in mine. I spray glued some aluminum flashing to foam board. I couldn't even be bothered using decent sheet metal. It's lasted me for 20 years now though. So good enough.
good video steve
Good morning! Thanks for another peaceful Saturday morning visit with coffee. I am glad you took a week off from projects and/or filming (or did you??) we all need a break from.... the grind. Heh heh
An elegant solution. Swageloks I used those for 44 years in my day job .
Nice filter screen work. That Mobil 600 flows like warm honey.
Really awesome upload... super keen to do this modification to my bandsaw.
Thank you for your efforts.
🇦🇺🤜🏼🤛🏼🍀🍀🍀😎
What was the music in the background of your forming the chip pan?
Nice work, nice video. I'm subscribing.
Look at QPM nozzles,or Loc Line fittings, adjustable, works better than copper tube I find.
Great content Steve. Have you changed anything after 2 years and has it extended the blade life? Thanks.
Hey brother
Love your videos watch them every Saturday wile drinking my coffee..
What keeps the blade from possible slipping with the coolant
How about adding a couple of magnets to the inside of the pan that will catch the smaller metal dust.
One work is sufficient, NICE
inspirational video. thank you!
8:30 🐢 “bugger off”, I’ve been here I was trying to get to the other side 🖕🏻 🤣👍🏴
I got one of those. They are marketed under the Clarke brand in UK .I cut mostly SS.
You like to buy pre-dented oilcans, I like to buy pre-dented trucks. Then we both slop oil while fillin em😂
hi Steve ..mind out when you use rear rollers on large stock. it WILL HIT rear moving jaw. ok tone uk
Nice mod to that saw. Well done.
Living in the Appalachians, I bet I pick up and move 25-30 box turtles out of the road every summer.
Steve, I blundered across your video while researching coolant options for my Grizzly horizontal 4x6, which is a clone of the HF. Really terrific solution. Would you consider fabricating a pan for sale along with a parts list ? Thank you. Regards, Jamie Riordan
If coolant is running off the end of a long cut-off piece ,try putting a cable tie or something similar like a piece of string around the cut-off piece to act as a drip path into the tray.
Even a magnet stuck to the bottom of the cut-off piece might work.
Fluid will always find the most direct downwards path.
Chunk of oil base modeling clay does the trick too.
This is an absolutely great idea. My wheels have been spinning for a few weeks about building something like this for mine, and I ran I to your video. What blades are you using, where can I get good quality blades?
8:40 Careful! Sometimes another turtle is watching while you do that, and steals your car….
"This one also comes pre-dented...saves me the trouble." Ha !
Well to Steve from another Steve. You are a very talented guy. I have subbed to your channel. I make a lot of tube video's & always think things through on camera. Keep them coming. I love your huge workshop. Mine is only Dinky here in the UK. I am picking up one of these saws on Monday. I have just sold my vertical Ferrex bandsaw as it will not cut stock like a horizontal will. I will definately be putting it on a stand tray & a coolant system like you have. Brilliant. Thanks for sharing. Regards
Steve.
Thanks Steve…… soldering! Who knew… 😁👍
Nice work! What TPI blade are you using with it? I have an equal type of bandsaw but I have some problems with the blade constantly slipping and coming off. Do you have any tips off fixing this? I have done my best to aline the blade
Steve did you get Covid you only put out a 20 min video lol.... Awesome video as usual lol... say hi to the squirrels for me lol
I hope your Goldenrod cans don’t weep through the base crimp like mine. Wish they soldered them to prevent the weeping.
Just wanted to check on screen mesh - you mentioned 900 mesh the highest I could find on Amazon was 400. Did I miss something or hear it wrong. Thanks - great video
Well that works better that the coolant system on our shop bandsaw with a factory coolant system
That's a big black wrench you got lol
nice little project. I really enjoyed it. you have quite a number of talents
A plastic tub with a screen plus a bar magnet close to the drain line. Use a fish tank pump. Done in a day with the same result.
The K.I.S.S. way
Keep it simple stupid.
Just my opinion the music needs to be more in the background 👇
Any updates on the DoAll Mill???
Hiya Steve
Hear the turtle now “ hey man what did you do that? I was going to the other side of road! It took me two days to get that far! Now have to start over!!” Hear about the snail that got run over by a turtle? He got knocked out, woke up in hospital. They asked if he knew what happened? He said no! It all Happened too FAST!!!’😂😂😂
What ever happened to the DoAll horizontal band saw you were working on about a year ago?
Great video 👍 I think it would be a great idea if you got a cheap Lazer CNC desktop and get Elizabeth to learn and start her own channel.
small light frame. and bolt around the edge compress mesh held in place. ?
great job earns a subscribe I think ill try adding a blade wiper on mine after the cut to see if I can cut down on some chips and coolant slinging off at the corner
I would buy that if you sold it in kit form. Looks good
how is the big DoAll horizontal coming along?
I had a bigger regular 7” x 12” and I used a piece of material where the metal chips use to fall and also where the cutting solution would drain into the reservoir. I would then take them off and let dry and throw them away. I also had a small drill wire brush 2” dial on there that would spin with the blade to keep the teeth cleat especially if I was cutting soft metal. Brass aluminum from gumming up the teeth.
Is there a 4 ft. sheet metal brake coming in your future. lol
That turtle has no idea what you did for him. He just thinks this blasted human AHHHHHH!!!!! And my chinesium 4X6 jet saw has no idea the headaches its giving me. Which is one of the reasons I am against buying chinese anymore. I've done everything but throw the kitchen sink at this and I still cannot get this thing to cut without throwing the blade! UHG!!!!!!!!!!!!
That really came out great ! That’s what they should offer as an add on kit from the factory. Or maybe you could make up all the parts as a kit ?
I've got a good magnet set up near the pump on my saw. Works very well.
Great! Would be better if coolant was on the other side of the material when the blade is the highest temperature
That turtle smiled at the internet! He might start his own channel!
After re-watching this morning @ 10:24, see your on/off switch is external where my Dayton is mounted under the bed with possibilities of coolant coming in contact with wiring. I will have to water proof the housing and problem goes away :)>..Lov your upgrade, and really helped on our restoration,,Thx, Bear.
Add water soluble oil to collant.
I see some of the old guys wrap lead solder around the base of the cylindrical oil cans. It helps to fill them only half way, too.
very clever and simple to slot the copper tubing. you see this setup on some other industrial machine?
make kits. i would by one.
If you do put screens on the drains make it a dome type that will allow chip build-up around the screen without blocking it right off.
Better watch having a shop dog hang around who's that tough, liable to drop an allen wrench and do some internal damage..
That tortoise spent nearly a day to get three-quarters of the way across the road... and you go and put him back to the start.
That's life. Two steps forward then someone puts you a days walking back.
Nice, job coolant system
Those off shore tires are gonna give up soon have some replacements coming
Will coolant cause rust on some of the raw steel parts being water based or do the antioxidants pretty much take care of it all? I know i machined out my drill press table and even oil sealed it after but every time i use that blue stuff it will put a rust mark on the table if i dont completely dry it all off when im done.. easy to miss a little sploodge and have ya spend 20 mins next time you go to use it getting that rust off..
what is you wedding ring made of? it looks nice i like it
Shop looks really great!
Turtle so mad that you interrupted its nice warm road nap.
Hey Steve, your new workshop space is so nice its now become the new family room!!
Nicely done Steve, should be a popular mod for lots of folks. 👍👍
You did a really good job on this one!
Thanks, that is useful.
Great job Steve, turned out nice with what two modifications. Cleaning the steel is the big trick to soldering with lead . Just like brazing clean and dry. Flux is acid to etch it in and together. So nice to see family hanging with dad.
Nice HF mod. We shared this video on our homemade tools forum this week :)
