Thank you for another thoughtful review. I love that you show us how you finished it all, it lets us know you didn't just skim but took in the entire experience the restaurant presented you. It's awesome and so is your willingness to share it with us. Thanks!
The food looked great James. The onion rings looked house made which to me make so much difference. For the money, considering you're in NYC, not too bad. I'm excited to the growth in the channel and feel kinda special for discovering these awesome reviews early on. LOL Cheers my friend
Cheers and thank you so much! I really appreciate the support! Yeah, those onion rings were fantastic and I was pretty surprised with just how much the sauce made a difference.
I am so glad I found your channel recently. Fabulous reviews. This looked like my kinda lunch and I love the story of how the concept was started. YUM!
Yeah, I get you on that one. They definitely bring a bit of heat to the burger. I saw some other people get the loaded tots and they looked incredible!
I have become addicted to smash burgers. There are a few places in Toronto's west end that do them well. One of them has housemade brownies and another excellent banana pudding (and decent poutine).
Another great vlog James! I really appreciate how you add a little background to the establishment you’re about to dine at. Good stuff! Dope ass T-shirt too, one of my favorite movies.
Thank you! Yeah, I love adding good information about the place that I think other people would be interested in too. Indeed, The Warriors is a classic!
Those burgers and tacos looked extremely tasty. I sure could go for one now having had no food or drink since midnight and having had surgery today. I am famished. Oklahoma burgers are the bests!!! Thank you James for bringing us this video.
Excellent review and I always enjoy watching your facial expressions as you enjoy both food and beverages. I saw one other post talking about Oklahoma and in a general sense I can think of Oklahoma onion burgers (which you also mention) but also include White Castle burgers (burgers cooked on a bed of onions, cut square with holes in them).
Great review! Thank you so much for taking us and sharing your experience! I hope to one day head there myself to try it. While I'm super understanding when a restaurant runs out of anything, I have to commend Mr. Puma for going above and beyond after realizing that the restaurant didn't have enough Aperol and attempting to make it right by you by going out himself to try and purchase more. This attention to detail can be easily lost in the hustle and bustle of service. I hope you take us along for more food journeys!
Thank you so much! Yeah, it's pretty clear that he really cares about his customers. Plus, this was when the restaurant first opened and I bet it runs smoother now.
Wow I just passed by this place yesterday during a walking tour. I was tempted to try the burger but I was full on pizza lol. I agree about the toppings, I don't even put ketchup on my burgers. BTW, I'm digging that T-shirt.
Thank you! Yeah, this place is definitely worth a try. Indeed, some toppings can work, others are just distractions. That was still a great burger, but next time, I'm leaving some of those toppings to the side.
There's a lot to be said for the 'humble' burger, and this particular iteration looks delicious. You'll have to give us a snapshot of your fitness routine one of these days, James. I'm growing moobs just watching!
Haha! Yeah, that was a strange one! The way tipping works there is you just press the percentage you want to give on the check out screen. I guess what I chose ended up as $6.66.
I just watched a short documentary on George Motz, and almost went to his new spot last week. Now, having seen your excellent review here, I'll have to do both! I actually had an apartment on Ludlow many years ago, I'd probably be here all the time if I still did! And, now I'm craving an Aperol Spritz on a Monday afternoon... Thanks😂 Thanks for another fantastic video James!
Nice! Yeah, Motz is an interesting guy! I have walked past his place a number of times, but I've never had the time yet to dine there, but the burgers look great! I definitely enjoyed Gotham Burger though. It's definitely worth checking out!
Thank you! My favorite burger of all-time is Minetta Tavern's Black Label burger, but I also really enjoyed Au Cheval's burger with everything on it, Emily's burger (the original location in Brooklyn) and Raoul's au poivre burger. Those are my favorites right now, but I've got more burgers to try.
Everything looked ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS especially the Dark Beer. I LOVE Dark Beer but unfortunately age and health has taken that pleasure away from me. Safe Journey! Yellowbird Blue Agave Sriracha!!!
If the beer was cheaper, it would be nice if they changed the receipt so as not to charge you for the aperol spritz, since it was their mistake to begin with. However, the food looked great overall!
You need to hit up Hamburger America, double onion burger, fries and the lemonade (incl tip) is like £26. And its hands down one of the best burgers I have ever had. Just make sure you roll up early to get a seat at the counter - as those are the ones that a) get to see George make their burger, and b) get the burger George made to eat.
@@JamesnuI ended up eating here after watching your video. I even sat in the same seat as you 😂😂. The burger and fries were excellent and paired well with a beer. Cheers my friend 🍻

Hey James, thanks again for a great video! Down to earth commentary and a positive attitude makes me wants to go to these places anymore. Got a quick question for you - I am taking a friend who's never been to New York before and has essentially never eaten anything except basic pasta/chicken and rice/salad . I want to blow their minds on what good food actually is. Our budget is 200 dollars each meal per person, where would you suggest we go to?
Thank you so much! You definitely have a lot of great options when it comes to that sort of budget. There's some pretty impressive tasting menu places like 63 Clinton. I think Le Bernardin's Prix Fixe lunch menu for $127 would probably be a good choice, although I feel like the portions might be pretty small for that one. Torrisi is a good option if you can get a reservation. Also, some of NYC's steakhouses might do as well like Delmonico's or Keens.
I like my burger buns toasted for the texture and it helps to avoid a soggy construction. Was the stout at room temp? Room temperature helps to bring out the flavors.
I thought (from another video) that your watch was a Pepsi-bezel Rolex GMT, but I see it’s a sharp-looking Seiko. I’ve seen an Orient in another video. You have great taste in watches!
Nice to get a closer look at what people have been going nuts for. Seems like a solid burger but still hard to see what earned it so much acclaim. It seems like a pretty standard rendition of something that takes about $3 in ingredients and 15 minutes to produce. The only explanation i can think of is that it's in a city where very few cook at home. That said, considering it's NYC, the price is surprisingly decent.
Always choose onion rings over French fries. It was great to see what one gets for $6.50 . I never understand why people don't order a smash burger plain (w/cheese & onion). How else will you know if their meat is any good? Thanks for giving us the history of how they came to be and for great filming and editing. This IS how restaurant Vlogs should be made.
In my state of Kentucky it's against the law to eat a hot dog or burger without loading it with catsup. I mean, we're talking up to 6 months at hard labor.
My review as I was there this past Saturday: -Arrived at around 2-ish. 15-ish people in front of me outside. Line moved. I was inside in 15 minutes. - The wait inside was around 10 minutes. -I ordered what you had....the double Gotham and onion rings with ranch. No beer as I headed to the Essex St Mkt after for some Top Hops brews. -The wait for my food was not long at all. The place was crowded and it is basically grab seats when you can. I ended up standing at one of the tables. -Both burger and onion rings looked nicely done. They only cook it one way. I believe, but I didn't ask and was not asked. -Burger: WAAAAYYY to many topings to enjoy. I am not into smash burgers and thought Hamburger America was also basically so-so. I ate there about a month or so ago. I could not taste much of the beef at Gotham. Plus...I never get smashing a burger and losing all of the juices. -Onion rings were good...not great. The side sauce was a nice touch. -Not expensive at all. Decor was nice and the staff that I interacted with were cool. -Great location in the LES. Steps from the Essex Mkt, Katz, shopping, etc. Overall....I would give it a 2.5/5.! Just way too many things added to the actual burger to even taste what was in front of me. As with Hamburger American, I won't be rushing back to Gotham!
Thanks for sharing your review. I know what you mean about the toppings. Like I said, some of them were a distraction and for my next order I won't be getting the burger with everything on it.
While I do appreciate that the products they do put out are good...running out of fries and their only cocktail is not cool. Also why does a full service restaurant have entirely disposable plating?
@@Jamesnu Google confirmed my suspicion: " This double is a short rib, brisket blend from Pat Lafrieda and has great beef flavor ", posted on IG by the store. LaFrieda seems everywhere. It must have given the new place a very special deal to price the double at $11. Elsewhere it'd be twice as much.
Definitely Nowon's cheeseburger. It's flavor combinations were on point and it was a bit more refined, but that burger was also twice the price. Gotham's offering was still great and is a solid deal for the cost.

I don't get why this is Oklahoma style? Hasn't White Manna in New Jersey been doing the smashed onion thing it for like 100 years? I guess we gotta let Oklahoma have something... not much going on there (yes, I've been to Oklahoma. Actually spent the most boring New Years Eve of my life there). Also, Gotham is NYC... why are they calling something country themed Gotham? All that being said, I will probably try this at some point.
Yeah, I don't know the full history of the Oklahoma style fried onion burger. I haven't been to that state yet. I think the name Gotham came far before the whole country themed style.
Haha! Well, I try to go to restaurants that I figure that I would like, but there are at least some specific courses that really disappointed me, which I will feature in future videos.

You should have ordered the egg cream
Next time. I saw a few people order them and they looked really good!
How does this compare to 7th Street?
I like 7th Street's burger just a bit more, but I like the fact that Gotham has all of those sides and other dishes that you can't get at 7th Street.
I don’t like ketchup either. Haven’t owned a bottle since 2010. I never put on my burgers.
I know what you mean.
Also you can't go Wrong with a Stout Beer and a Cheeseburger...
Absolutely!
Move over Morgan Freeman… your melodic sound is the best
Haha! Thank you!
I wonder if DC Comics might have an issue with the name?
Haha!
I’m waiting for the day when James has a meal that he finds disgusting.
Haha! Well, I try to go to restaurants that I figure that I would like, but there are at least some specific courses that really disappointed me, which I will feature in future videos.
Fun fact....it's illegal in NYC for a restaurant to sell alcohol they buy from another retailer.
I didn't know that. I guess it's lucky for the restaurant that it was closed that day.
Where's the fukin BATMAN 🦇
Haha!
