Hey Bob...great videos! What was really interesting was the house you lived at 819 Michigan Street was the same house my family lived at in the 1960s!

Enjoying your very in depth documentary on Port Huron. You are so right about the Salvation Army. I work in the courts in Toronto, and the army is still a presence helping those in custody with no resources, family or friends to turn too.

    Bob,
what a wonderful archive you have created of a unique city and downtown area. While I live in Chicago (and have actually ran into many Port Huronites) I lived through the seventies and unfortunately witnessed the decline of the city. You stated in the PHTH article it only took you an hour or so but you must have spent much more time, and it is appreciated. I hope the city will take your videos and do something creative maybe in the schools. Wonderful job, thanks!

Hope you enjoy the rest of them. These videos were never meant to be all inclusive but I use only what I have info and photos for. I have already done the north end of town and Walnut St was not covered.

Glad you are enjoying them. It takes me about 1 hr. per 1 min. of video which includes selecting the photo, researching the location, inserting into video format, animating the photo so it doesn't look like a slide show, putting in the narration, and then rendering the video.Thank you for the kind remark.

I didnt expect after looking for some vids on youtube re Port Huron that I would be leaving this sort of message, but He works in mysterious ways. The RC Church I attend in downtown Toronto, St. Basils, is very diverse. To the north, the largest expression of retail wealth in Canada, Bloor Street West, with Gucci, Tiffinay, Channel, Louis Vitton etc...To the west, the University of Toronto. To the south, a rapidly gentrifying area of expensive condos. But lots of poverety as well. St. Basils helps the poor with our kitchen, visits those in need with food baskets and connects those with health issues with professionals. The Salvation Army is great, but many other Christians have caught on to their message as being the critical message of Christ.

Hello, I am 39y/o. I came to Port Huron from 1978 when my mother and father moved here from Detroit so this is my home. I want to say thank you for the videos. I love Port Huron and the history. I live in the home that David Moore built around 1893 on Walnut st. I know he was a store owner. I have been looking for photos of this home from past years but have not found any. I am not sure if your videos will cover this area or not but I am going to watch all of them anyway. I am on video 7 now.

It's really hard to say who was first. There were many appliane dealers and then the tire stores such as your grandfather's and the store I worked at (Firestone) began handling a full line of appliances. Back in the 20's an appliance store sold mostly radios and the gas and electric co. sold the ranges and major appiances. In the 1924 directory BF Goodrich is not listed but there were stores that sold radios. In the 1946 directory it shows BF Goodrich with Cliff Lane as manager.

I have a question for you, my Great Grandfather was Clifford Lane. I was always told his store (BF Goodrich in your video) was at one point the first electronics store in Port Huron, do you know if this is true, and do you have any other pictures? Thank you

I may be able to help you with the store though. In the 1899 directory for PH it shows David Moore's store at 2301 Gratiot Ave.First store on the West side pf Gratiot near the bridge. It says this about the store."A dealer in a fine line of fancy and family groceries, canned and bottled goods, flour, provisions, fruits, etc.

    To Bob or Melissa,
My dad who is 83, alway mentioned a man known as Cliff Lane owning a Packard automobile dealership. He always called it Cliff Lane Packard. Do you know if that is true?
Also Bob, wasn't Wilson Chrysler in the block where Downtown Motor Lodge is? Its my understanding that they sold the property to Barretts of the Cawood name. Do you recall that?

(Will only allow so many characters) but in the 1957 directory it shows him as owner. I'm sorry I do not have any other pictures but I do remember your grandfather well as I lived only one block away.

The only Cliff Lane I'm aware of is the Cliff Lane that had a tire store on the corner of Glenwood and Huron Ave. I can't remember a Wilson dealership. Sorry.
