  • Video-In this completely free DIY video we show you how to install Vance & Hines Shortshots Staggered exhaust on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. We used a 2016 Harley Dyna Low Rider S (CVO) for this project. However, it will be very similar regardless of what year and model Harley you're putting them on. These pipes come in black or chrome.
    We also give you a "before & after" sound comparison between the restricted stock Harley exhaust and the V&H Shortshots. You'll want to wear headphones to get a true sense of the sound difference.
    You'll need to remap your electronic fuel injection (EFI) after installing new exhaust on your Harley-Davidson. We suggest you start here and decide which aftermarket EFI tuner you might want to install: www.lawabidingbiker.com/34

    I've never wrenched on a bike really, ever. This video enabled me to install the big radius pipes on my '17 FXDB without any real issues. Took a little trial and error to figure the best clamp configuration but it got me across the finish line. Thx fellas! I feel a much greater pride in ownership having done it myself.

    Huge thanks for an extremely helpful video! The most annoying part of the install is the nut plates! Tip: Before bringing the pipe to the bike,cut a small length of thin cardboard (like the back of notepad thin) and place that at the base of the bracket you are going to slide the nut plates into. Cut another for the rear (pipe side) of the bracket. Now slide the nut plate in and line holes up with slot in bracket. Bring the pipe to bike and after loosely installing the head pipe, you can easily install the bolts into the nut plate because it won't move!!!

    My recently-acquired 2010 FXDWG came with the blacked V&H Shortshot staggereds. They are a really quality product. They fit beautiffuly and sound nice, if a bit on the loud side. I intend to add some baffles later on. This is an excellent video, especially the part about installing the O2 sensors, which has to be done carefully. Thanks, especially for the sound comparison.

    Just bought this system for my 2011 Fat Bob. Went to dealership for an estimate of installation costs and they said about $1,000 which included a tuner of their choosing. I just walked out and sort of gave up on the idea of a full exhaust system and was going to settle on using slip ons instead. Just watched this video about 10 times, and I think I can do it myself. I don't have any experience with motorcycle repair or alterations, but I'm gonna try. Thanks for the great video and easy instructions.

    Love that bike, Ryan. I'm thinking about buying one for myself right now, but I'm a little hesitant with the rumor of the M8 trickling down to the Dynas. Also, I'm totally digging the podcast. Subscribed to both. Keep up the good work. In any event, a couple of questions. First, any problems with LEOs taking issue with the volume of the V&H pipes (I'm sure you don't have problems with that, but I might in Seattle)? Second, what make/model is that seat? I like the way it looks and the stock seat on the FXDLS has got to go. Third, I'm 6'1" with a 34" inseam. What are your thoughts on the forward controls? Sorry for the long message. Thanks for the great content.

    • @rkksterbigd1
      @rkksterbigd1 7 років тому +1

      Issues with the loudness of the pipes? Not really, but in Eastern WA LEO's do not make that an issue. But then again we also do not have to certify our cars every two years like in a few Westside Counties and in Spokane. The seat, it is a Mustang seat. Great seats and very comfortable. The stock seat was just a bit to forward for me so I replaced it when I got the bike and now Ryan owns it. I liked the stock bars, but Ryan liked these so he changed them. A really good addition I must say. As far as the motor, this motor is a tank.....at least in my opinion. Yes the M8 is trickling down, but the 16-17 years are the only years for this bike. So if you want the S model which has the Screaming Eagle motor in it you need to buy it now. HD has said they will not do a Low Rider S for 2018. Maybe another Dyna will get the S treatment in 18, but who knows at this point. RK

    Hey buddy, new to the bike world but I'm really excited to get my first bike. 2021 Street Bob 114. If i did the exhaust myself with your tuner would it void my warranty? Harley is so expensive for upgrades and especially since my son and I could do it. And if it wouldn't void my warranty how much is that tuner and could you possibly give me a link to a website to get tuner and choose my exhaust and purchase it myself and have it shipped to me? I really want the short shots that come right out of the block and straight to the ground.. I know that's a lot of questions and I apologize but I just stumbled upon this channel and I can honestly say I will never be without a Harley-Davidson as long as I live I'm 41 so I'm trying to learn as much as possible thanks for the video and I appreciate any help you can give me have a blessed day!

    @RyanUrlacher - do these pipes get delivered with what appears to be rust inside them? Or should these be chrome, inside and out? I understand from V&H that this is just from the oils of production and it gets burnt off when you ride... is that true or did I receive a bad pair?

      Pop of the cover near the fuse block. You should see it there. If there isn't one, the owner probably had a stage 1 flash loaded from a HD dealer. The crackle and pop isn't uncommon.

    Great video! I just ordered my V&H ShortShots but I was advised if I used FP3 my warranty will get void, does it really need to be tuned or can it run with just the stocks for now? • @RyanUrlacher

      You should retune any time you make a change to intake or exhaust. Having your bike flashed at a dealer will most likely cost around $200.

    Aren't these a little restrictive for the fdxls 110?? I get that sound is super important, but when you change your exhaust, power should be a concern too. These actually lower your power if anything. They do look sweet though.

    so what are the o2 sensor plugs for. when is it preferable to use the plugs rather then reinstall the existing o2 sensors ?

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  7 років тому

      It depends on the ECM has. Reinstall the O2 sensors if your bike has them.

    I just purchased a set of these. Can’t wait to get them installed. The rear O2 sensor was cross threaded at the factory, so now unless Harley honors their screw up then I’ve got to purchase another one. I am wondering why no thread paste was used either for easy removal. I know paste isn’t the correct word, I just can’t think of it right now. What are the other links in which you mentioned in the video?

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  5 років тому

      No need on thread lock for this project. Use it if you like. All the links are in the description below the video Paul.

      Actually the word I was looking for was Anti Seize..The rear 02 sensor was galled and the threads can't be used any more. I did show the Harley shop where I purchased the bike to see if they can warranty it out to include the stock exhaust if I ever wanted to go back. Plus i don't have any spare plugs for any fuel management on my dyna Street Bob??

    So Ryan, What pipes are you recommending for 2016 FLHXS? With Performance foremost and sound secondary. We do a lot of rides long distance often 2 up... Thanks!

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  7 років тому +1

      Definitely upgrade your head pipes to the V&H Power Duals or cut out your cats. The OS 450 slip ons have great back pressure and a low deep rumble. The slips ons with the perforated metal baffles sound good, but don't have as much back pressure. Based on what you said above, I would suggest the Power Duals and OS 450s. Check out our V&H products at: shop.lawabidingbiker.com/collections/air-fuel-exhaust

    these are the pipes I'll be getting for my 2016 street bob, as far as the air intake upgrade I was planning on getting the arlen ness big sucker, just not sure what the difference is between a stage 1 and stage 2 air intake. any suggestions?

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  7 років тому

      Stage one intake is really anything that opens up and lets the engine breath better than stock.

      Ryan Urlacher ah okay! One last question for you if you don’t mind. I just bought these pipes for my 2017 Street bob, now at the moment I have a stock air filter if I put these pipes on am I still gonna need an FP3? Or should I be okay without it for a little while? I only ask because I don’t have the money to buy the fp3 right at the moment.

    I have a 2015 sportster 1200 48 with stock pipes.I just bought the bike from the dealer.I wanted them to add the vance and hines short shots before takeing the bike.They Didn't want to.They said they would have to put it on the dyna to tune i tand it would cost 400.00.And thats just for the dyna. They wanted 1,700.00 for the whole job with new breather..Crazy. What should i do.

    • @RyanUrlacher
      @RyanUrlacher  7 років тому +2

      I suggest doing it yourself. For the price of the dyno tune, you can by a Vance and Hines FuelPak 3. Check out our Vance and Hines products here: shop.lawabidingbiker.com/collections/air-fuel-exhaust We also have videos to help you do the install yourself. www.lawabidingbiker.com/videos/

    This video is very helpful. Although there’s a caption to detached the other end of the sensor- simply instruct to detach the wire at the other end. Don’t give instructions to twist the wire before fitting because it will damage the internal wiring that will cost money.
