    WARATAH
Waratah is a small, scenic town on the edge of the Tarkine wilderness with a rich mining past, a magnificent town-side waterfall and a unique lakeside setting.
The town sits on the edge of Lake Waratah and the Tarkine Reserve and was once home to the richest tin mine in the southern hemisphere. Mining has long since ended and Waratah now attracts visitors for its history, remoteness and unique setting: how many towns can boast a waterfall right in the centre of town?
The Waratah Courthouse Museum has an eclectic collection of local artifacts, photos and stories and 'Philosopher' Smith's Hut next door reveals the living conditions in the early days of pioneers and mining.
Picnic by the waterfall and enjoy the views of the surrounding hills. Go platypus spotting on a stroll around the lake or try fishing for trout.
There are some beautiful bushwalks to be had around town, including Hellyer Gorge, the dramatic Philosopher Falls and the Whyte Hill Lookout, with sweeping views across the Tarkine rainforest.
Accommodation is available at the caravan park and camping ground, a hotel and guest houses.
Waratah is about a 4.5-hr drive from Hobart and a 75-min drive from Devonport.
    PHILOSOPHER FALLS
Follow the historic mining water race along an easily accessible walking track that leads to a view of Philosopher Falls -named after the man who changed the fortunes of the entire state of Tasmania through his discovery of tin at Mt Bischoff, near Waratah. Just a ten kilometre drive out of Waratah, on the B23 road to Corinna, you will discover this stunning short walk that provides a glimpse into the wild and mysterious Tarkine rainforest.
Autumn is the best time to see the cartoon-like fungi dotted all along the track, but at any time of the year, this is an experience you don't want to leave off your bucket list. The Falls lookout is at the end of the 45-minute stroll into the forest (there is a stairway leading to the base of the falls), however even a short ten-minute walk in from the car park will reward you with a magical 'Alice in Wonderland' experience.
