  • Travel with the train driver as we travel from Queenstown to Lynchford on steam locomotive 'Mount Lyell Number 3'. This railway is a reconstruction of the Mount Lyell Mining and Railway Company railway between Queenstown and Regatta Point on the West Coast of Tasmania, Australia. The line is progressively being upgraded and reopened toward the full railway being operational again.

    I first rode this train in 1962 when it was carrying sheets of copper to Strahan with one passenger car at the back. The ride down the other side of the mountain was quite hair-raising, especially when it rushed over the large trestle bridge which was very rickety and wobbly!

      That would have been some ride. You are very lucky to have that experience. 👍😀

    March 2023 we were booked onto the Wilderness Railway from Queenstown, I can't remember how far we were going but it was past the rack section.
    We flew from NZ, landed in Hobart and the drove to Queenstown. The next morning we were all exited about our trip, the scheduled time for departure came and went and we told the loco wasn't steaming properly. Sometime later they announced that another loco had the fire lit, that too had issues and we missed out on our ride and were refunded.
    About 2 weeks before leaving NZ I called the Wilderness Railway asking about attaching a GoPro to the loco because I hadn't seen anything on YT and received as resounding no. Maybe that was the silver lining in the cloud because I would have been disappointed as my GoPro had failed on the next use at Colebrook when recording "South Line Paper Train Video."
    Was Lynchford the end of the trip for you? You certainly got lucky with the weather in Queenstown, cold and wet when we were there.
    We will get to TAS again to ride this train. Our next Tasman crossing is for the Ghan later this year.
    Hi from NZ,
    Anthony.

      That's a bit of a bugger that your trip didn't work out. The train is only running as far as Lynchford at the moment due to major track work. They are hoping that by the end of the year it will be operating right through. I look forward to doing the whole trip again. It's a great trip well worth doing. 👍 😀

      The track condition has always been a problem since it was reconstructed in 1998. The track was lifted in 1963 and easement returned to rain forest 30 years but you could drive a car from Strahan to Teepookana steel Bridge until 1998. All the track was transferred from the north east line the section between Tonganah and Ledgerwood, many sharp curves, still attached to sleepers. Bought by Roger Smith a business partner with the Government Abt Railway Ministerial Corporation and sold it to them at a profit. But the geometry of the curves were different and rail forced to new geometry.. The rail profile was heavily worn too. I knew the last original ganger back in 1992. He explained the difficulty of maintaining rack section of the rail. They would be better off operating out of Strahan and do return trips to Dubbil Darril. Experience the rain forest and King River. Extremely high maintenance steam locomotives because two steam engine in one and difficult maintenance access to the rack engine between the frames. Everyone ignored or hid the 1983 business feasibility report in 1998 after the Federal Government handed $ million to compensate the gun buy back laws.

    Mount Lyell No. 3, that's an interesting steam loco name

    • @driver667
      @driver667  4 місяці тому

      The Mount Lyell Mining Company originally built and operated this line and this locomotive was one of five steam locomotives, hence, No. 3 👍😀

    Great video. I never knew this railway existed.Was it part of Tasmanian railways in years gone by?

    • @driver667
      @driver667  4 місяці тому

      It was owned by the Mount Lyell mining company and connected to the government railway at Regatta Point which connected to the Emu Bay railway at Zeehan which connected to the government railway at Burnie. (What a mouthful 🤣) An interesting mix of government and private railways. 👍😀

    A few questions, is it 3ft 6in gauge, what weight is the rail and does the driver use the right hand side of the cab ?

    • @driver667
      @driver667  4 місяці тому +1

      This is 3ft 6in gauge. I'm not sure what the weight of the rail is. The driver drives from the right hand side of the cab. 👍😀
