I remember my 2.0 with Monza exhaust. It had the screaming yellow paint, horrible heating, but I drove it from Olympia Washington to Denver Colorado in two days. That will never be forgotten. I love these cars.

So with the monza exhaust, you essentially had no heater. Thats how 914s got their heat, from heat exchangers built into the stock exhaust. That must have been fun when the OEM exhaust began to rust, and the typical oil leaks got into the holes. When I got my 72 I had to put a clutch in it immediately. I didnt know why at the time but there were several thick aluminum pie plates sitting on top of the exhaust.
Much as I loved that car at the time reliability was terrible.

In Canada. I owned a 914 2litre for 6 years. I sold it to a bank manager for the same price I paid for it.
It was silver with mag. wheels and I kept it in concours condition most of the time. For all the vehicles
I’ve owned this is my most favourite and memorable of all. Wonderful times.

A great walk down memory lane , 914 was ahead of its time when compared to other vehicles of its era. My brother in law had the 4 cylinder model and it was a fun vehicle which he wishes he still had today.

I owned a 914 from 1970 to 1978 (when it was in an accident and totaled). Most memorable car I ever owned. I should have bought another one after the accident.

2 trunks, removable roof, plenty of room for 6' plus drivers, and 30 mpg. Whats not to love? Well that snap oversteer thing but it wouldnt be a problem now that Im older and a more sane driver. Then theres the shifter...
Most of the bone stock ones are homely as heck, but it doesnt take a lot to remedy that.
My 72 had the riviera 5 spoke mags and was lowered an inch when I got it at 10 years old. I put the 916GT fiberglass bumpers on it with rectangular driving lights, painted it blue metallic including the sail panel and it was very attractive. I was 19 and in the navy in san diego, good times.

I've owned 5 914's and ultimately made the 1st LS1 and later LS6 powered 914 in 2000. It ultimately reached 530 crank hp on the dyno. Wide body, full cage, 930 front suspensuon, 930 brakes all around, 996 TT wheels, modified 930 transaxle. 0-60 in 3.0, 1/4 mile in 10.98 @ 133 mph, top speed 185 mph. It ran like a demon at various road courses.
Sold the car in 2009... still miss it.

4:55 My 1st car was a 914. When the window crank broke, I had two choices. Buy one from the Porsche dealer for $100 or buy the EXACT same part for 1/5th the price, but it came in a bag that said VW. That little Porsche sticker on the bag was worth 80 dollars.!

I’m slowly building a project 914, bringing it back from near death with new sheet metal, away bars, Koni shocks, 96x66 mm, 1911 cc engine with hotter cam, cylinders with aluminum fins, modern EFI. And a wish list of close ratio gears and a hill climb 31:6 or 5.16:1 ring and pinion. With this and companion donor car that will make three 914s and a 914-6 that I’ve had along with two 356s, a 912 and a 944. The 912 has been my favorite.

A friend of mine ran his 1972 914 in autocrosses in the Richmond, Virginia area in the early 'seventies and won so many of the events he was banned from competing against the 911 owners he was putting to shame. Those 911 owners were not happy. Eventually, my friend bought a 911s and won very few events with that particular car and the 911 crowd was happy again.

I've owned two 914's, both 1973 1.7L models. The first was 5 years old when I purchased it from a friend- with less than 1500 miles on it. Sadly, a 15 year old kid who was drunk at the time ( blood/alcohol level of 1.5 ) took my beloved from me. The second one had almost 90,000 miles on it and had not been treated very well.
But when I think back, I realize that I would never want any other make or model than the 914. Nothing came close!

It's worth noting that at the grueling 1970 24 hours of Le Mans race that the 914 came in sixth place *overall* with only prototype non-production race cars beating it. That's ahead of the 911Ss and other more prestigious (and expensive) Porsches. One has to wonder if that was one of the nails driven into the coffin of the 914-6. A 914-6 with a detuned 911 engine that could still outperform a 911S on the track...

I had an orange ‘72 1.7 and a white 1975 1.8. The 1.7 has much more torque and was screaming fast. The 1.8 had the giant safety bombers and was nowhere near as quick as my 1.7. I bought the 1.8 because it only had 22,000 miles on it. I wish I had one of them now, I really miss the targa top.

Can anyone explain the braking sensation on the 914? I would drive fast up to a stop, brake very late and hard. Instead of feeling pitched forward, it felt like the car squatted and you were pushed down in the seat with no fuss! And after fussing with Weber’s and rusted heater boxes $$$ I put in a Buick 215 aluminum V8. SO MUCH FUN!

However, the suspension is junk in modern standards.
