What a pleasure it must have been to visit Hardwick Hall. I’ve always been fascinated by Bess, but have never managed to visit the house “more glass than wall”. After your video rekindled my interest, I picked up the biography by Mary S Lovell (2005) which I read a long time ago. Lo and behold, the picture on the cover is of Bess’ hands, emerging from a beautifully stitched blackwork undersleeve. The book mentions that some of The embroideries stitched by Bess are held in the V&A, as well as the ones still at Hardwick Hall. The author also recounts how, when Mary, Queen of Scots was in the custody of the Shrewsbury, Bess and Mary spent many hours stitching together, Mary being regarded as even more talented with the needle than Bess. Apparently, it is believed that some of the pieces at Hardwick Hall are Mary’s work. You probably know all this. But I highly recommended the book for anyone interested in this period.

We went to Hardwick Hall in June this year. What an amazing place. It’s full to the brim with needlework. What did you think of the Gideon Tapestries?! The Big Stitch sounds like a huge success and I hope to be able to attend one in the future. Happy stitching 🧵

I was so glad to see you were starting a Chatelaine! I've been prepping for a few weeks to start The Polar Mandala in mid-August. It made me lol to hear you say how many projects you took to Big Stitch - I currently have four mini-kitted up, including the Chatelaine, that I'm taking to Alaska - I absolutely want to 'start' it there as a memento of the trip, and was just thinking last night "You probably won't even stitch on them all" 😂 That's what luggage is for! Great video! Loved hearing about the Big Stitch. If you do kit up any more Chatelaines, Hawkins Hobbies is fab for sourcing things - I kitted up my Japanese Garden through them and it was super easy (and shipped from the UK so no customs fee potentials)

Hi Lisa - I'm sorry, I really don't know the area well. To my knowledge there aren't a great deal of brick and mortar shops in the UK but I can definitely recommend a trip to the V&A museum!

@@disorderlystitcher hello! It’s a specific type of sampler that has a multiplication table in the middle. It helped young girls to learn their numbers. If you google them you see lots of examples, many of which have been reproduced 😄
