I like the "reverse list". I write down things I know I have, things I love, etc. So if I'm at Marshalls and I see all these cute shoes for next to nothing....I check my "list" and it reminds me that I have plenty of shoes that I love, and I don't need anything new just to fill that "lonely/bored/impulse" void. It not only stops me from purchasing, but after a while I can truly enjoy shopping without buying. It's quite freeing!
My son does that for me lol he is 13 and hates shopping always saying mom you don't need that why do you need that can we go now . But when he nags me does make me stop and think. Also taking my other small kids with me helps I want get put as soon as possible.
From a low income 1 income household, start filling your $1000 small emergency fund! Even if it seems impossible or like its taking forever or even if you have to use it before its full, keep going! It is possible and it makes a huge difference! It takes many things that would have seemed like an emergency and turns them into just an inconvenience. Huge piece of mind!
Great tips! I talked to my friends and we decided to stop getting each other Christmas gifts, none of us needed anything and they were just trinkets. We decided spending time together was more importatant. It also takes a little stress away from buying more gifts.
I now batch my beans! I couldn’t believe how much cheaper it is to make bag beans versus canned beans. I make a big pot and freeze half of it. I can make rice, burritos, chili, so many ways to use beans!
Something we do in our house to save money which people almost get angry about is -we don’t celebrate the holidays- Xmas Easter, birthdays, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, and so many others. It seams every month there is a holiday which involves spending money and so we made a personal family choice not to participate. In our case it’s too much of a financial burden and we are considered a below average yearly income. Instead what we do in our house is created our own special day which is -back to school party or going to school party- we go to the city and shop for new clothes and really anything needed for school and a couple other things they want. Then we go out to eat we end the day with going to the movies. This doesn’t mean I NEVER give gifts it’s just we really think carefully of our purchases. So for example if someone is getting married I will get a small but pretty notebook and fill the first few pages of our favourite family recipes and they can fill it themselves with their own recipes. Or if someone is having a Baby, I offer a freezer meal for after when the baby is born or to come over for a couple hours to clean/tidy up while mom and baby sleep. That was something that was done for me and I really appreciated it.
Great content. I just gained a subscriber .I am 45 years old single mother living in Texas I am hoping to retire at 50 if things keep going well for me. Bought my first house last month and I can't be proud more that I am right now. I am so glad I made good decisions about my finances that changed me forever.
We always, always leave rhe house with our own drinks (mostly water). This includes my 5 year old son. This curbs eating outside the house and the random drive thru.
I need to stop commenting before finishing! You brought me to tears when you said we are not bad people bc of bad money choices, I needed to hear that. I watched my parents struggle and I only now am starting to be aware of how we spend money and I have so much regret and self esteem issues tied to money spending. Thank you for always telling us the truth but also reminding us we can turn it around! xo last- comment, I promise!
Buy second hand, keep your old car running, shop for shoes and clothes cheaply like everything £5! Use leftovers, buy reduced price foods, freeze what you can. Lots and lots can be done!
I've done this for years no new clothes for me ( except under clothes)I shop Church thrift sales and garage sales most of my meat and a lot of my groceries are from the markdown section if I dine out it's the senior discount or with coupons. Monday through Friday I go to my local Township for my free newspaper bread and baked goods on Saturdays my local churches take turns with free meals right now they're carryout in September the township will go back to offering twice a month free lunches and they are going to try out once a month Saturday breakfast for seniors if you really check around there's all kinds of free deals
I froze individual portions when I was teaching in a school. I had a whole rotation thing going and it was easy to grab one as I headed out and by lunchtime it was thawed. The other teachers thought I cooked all the time because my lunch was always different. My tip: my time and sanity are worth something too so choosing where I'm willing to cut costs and where my time/sanity is worth the extra $ keeps me from burning out.
Thank you for the list of these tips and for making us aware that it's a mental process to mKe good financial decisions. Your channels was the first I subscribed too when I was learning How to get my stuff in order and be good financially. YEARS LATER YOU STILL GIVE ME SO MUCH OF VALUE!! I appreciate all the videos you make and the brilliant content you share. Thank you so much!! 💓
I do the 52 week challenge. There are many of them and some that are shorter than 52 weeks. The point is to save a little bit each week and see how it builds up to a larger amount. This method taught me that it's less daunting to say "I'm going to save X-small amount a week" than to say "I'm going to save Y-thousands this year". There so many iterations of this "challenge" and they're not insurmountable --there's one for everyone. I have a small income and I can still save more than I thought I could by doing it in small increments. My other strategy is that I never touch my savings. I know it's there in case the worst should happen, but I don't really consider it money I "have". I don't know if that makes sense. I keep a buffer in my checking account for emergencies. Wow, that was a long comment! If you made it this far, you're a rock star! If you didn't, you're still a rock star!
I absolutely love your channel. I never thought about how my loneliness ( stay at home / homeschool mom ) might reflect in my spending. I don’t spend a lot because we don’t have a lot but I do put stuff in my cart forever and then occasionally pull the trigger. 😅💜
Ok , I just had to pause your video and quickly scribble down how happy I am to have found your channel before my little man wakes up from his nap 😜 absolutely love your content, thanks for sharing your tips, and with such a fun spin to it. Greetings from the UK from an aspiring VA 👋🏼
I have a no buy list. I make a list of things I just don’t need. Current list is: dog toys, yoga pants, Tupperware/containers, books and bath products. I get into fits of buying things and so I shut myself off.
I buy my Android phones, and get ones that serve my purposes. Nothing against iPhones, but I've just always had Androids. I'd rather have a phone that's mine outright, instead of making monthly payments on the phone itself.
I’ve unsubscribed from two or three channels, because they just make me feel, just envious, like why do i not have these things, when in reality i don’t need them Lydia and I’ve also found they have no regard for recycling or things like that, some great tips Thankyou x
I simplified my shopping by no longer keeping a list. As I need things, I save a step and add it directly into the grocery app or amazon cart. Then on designated pickup/checkout days, I quickly review the "carts" and either add (or remove) things right before clicking submit.
This was great! Super helpful. The other day our 3 kids were begging for Chipotle, so we ran into the supermarket and got sour cream and splurged for pre made guac- I went home and made that cilantro rice and a bunch of other copy cat goodies- it felt so good to NOT spend a fortune- that we didn't have budgeting on a quick fix!
I try to combine time-saving measures with cost-saving practices because I have often felt that I spend more money when I am short on time. One tip is to have a dedicated leftover night or a soup and sandwich night. It is easy prep., especially if everyone makes their own sandwich or heats their own leftovers, and it reduces food waste. My family really looks forward to this night. I have frozen soups in the freezer that I made in the summer when vegetables were abundant. I make sure that we have pasta before this night as that is a popular warm-up dish and a roast so that leftover meat can be used for sandwiches. Many thanks for all the encouragement!
Anytime I am considering a BIG purchase, I allow myself at least 3 days to really think about it and ask myself do I really need it. Recently my Dryer wasn't drying like it should, I realized that the filter was torn and not collecting the lint as it should, so I replaced the filter ($26) problem solved!
I have been trying to stay home more. I call it the 2 S’s: 1) STAY home & 2) SAVE money. So when my bf asks what I’m doing on my day off I tell him “the two s’s” lol
Practical meal planning so there is no panic at dinner time on what you are going to have so that you don’t order out. It also helps to know exactly what you need at the grocery store so you don’t get extras that go to waste.

I really appreciate you and enjoyed your post. This is my first time being on your channel. And I already love it. Thank you for all the great advice. Especially about not feeling guilty about past money mistakes. I’m living at a very low income right now. And this is my 2nd or 3rd time in the last 20 years of having to be extra frugal. But, I know if I’m more mindful about my savings and spending that things will get better. My problem at the moment is because of ill health. I can’t work a 40 hour a week job anymore. But, I will bounce back. It might take a minute. But, God will provide. Thank you and keeping sharing. 👍🏻❤️
Shout-out I’m on a “use up” what’s in the pantry and fridge. I’ve had a few not on budget expenses and this method helped me offset some of the expenses. I can see the shelf space and the back of the fridge and freezer. 😳🤦🏻♀️😂
I have stopped watching UA-cam videos of people using a kit that I need to purchase, I also stay away from that stupid Dollar Tree!! I use online grocery ordering and pickup. HUGE savings on the grocery pickup. Staying out of the grocery store keeps me on a budget!!
I have one caveat to this about $Tree… If I’m trying to figure out a new way to organize (or what have you) & I want to see if I can do it on a low cost way before I spend $$ on something that is more sturdier (like baskets, etc) then I will use the Dollar tree versions of “baskets/buckets” 😉
I can attest to the grocery pick up working. We have stopped bc our Kroger was dropping the ball quite a bit but I’m going WAY over budget. I like seeing the total and weeding out the unnecessary things before checkout. I don’t typically like shopping at Walmart but I may have to try it to get my grocery bill down.
I don't think I will ever give up going into Kroger for my groceries I get most of my meat other food items and household items from the markdown section I would miss those if I did online shopping when Kroger has their 5for$5 deals I am able to combine mark down items I once got 10 bags of nacho bugles for a total of $.39 cents using two $2.00 off 5 coupon and the 5 for $5 two of the bags were not marked down but were on sale. I was able to share my savings with others
Each week I check my checking account. I bring my last number to zero. Say my checking account states $255.55 I will transfer $5.55 to my savings. It's small but adds up over time especially if your starting out with saving money
During the summer months when berries are on sale or we get to pick them fresh, I wash them, lay them out on a cookie sheet and freeze. Then I place the frozen berries in a large container in my deep freezer. Can be used to smoothies, cobblers, homemade yogurt cups, etc
Frozen berries cost much less than fresh ones usually. You can find big bags at Sam's, Costco, Walmart and restaurant supply stores. Some grocery stores also carry them.
I make broth all the time but I would love a video on taking fruit scraps and making jam. I thought you took fresh fruit and boiled it down (like whole strawberries or blueberries, not scrap pieces)
This idea of putting 'unwanted presents away and re-gifting'. Would you save everything in a storage box, or just gifts over a certain amount please? Recently my little one had a birthday and we ended up with a 'lot' of toys and gifts that were far too young for him as they hadn't seen him in a while and bought them during lockdown. I was considering putting them in a 're-gift' box. However, my husband told me to 'just donate' as they took up too much space - we live in a really small 1 bed apartment.
Replace your debit or credit card every 6mo to a year. If I have a card too long I memorize its number and it’s so easy to do a quick impulse purchase online if I can be lazy and not have to get up and get my purse. Replacing your card number also causes all of your automatic purchases to bounce back with an email asking you to reenter your payment information which forces you to decide if you want to keep up with said thing.
I would ask family to buy my daughter clothes for her birthday, because it was a month until Christmas and she would need fall/winter clothes and i would ask family to buy my son spring clothes for his birthday because it was two months after Christmas, and Christmas is for toys or things they really want, so I only had to buy clothes for one child for fall and one for spring!
My best money saving tip is find some good thrift stores and consignment shops in your area. 99% of our clothes are from the thrift store. The only thing we don't buy used is undergarments, bathing suits and sneakers. I know we've saved thousands of dollars by doing this.
My hint: Learn the rule of 6/12. Money invested at 6% will double every 12 years; money invested at 12% will double every 6 years. Keep investing at the highest return you can get in order to build wealth. Oh, and stop watching haul videos. They make you think you "need" all that stuff.
We track our net worth every quarter and I can attest to how motivational it is. We keep it simple with bank/investment accounts and (rough) home equity on the positive side and our sole debt, our mortgage, on the other.
Please save for retirement even if just a few dollars a week. Even if you follow Dave Ramsey, who says NOT to participate in your companies match when paying off debt. That is BAD advice. This is coming from a retired lady!
I use cut up old shirts that were headed to the trash can as hankies or rags. That way we get more life out of them & I don’t need to buy kleenex or paper towels/paper napkins nearly as often (hubby still likes the paper towels occasionally for SOME spills), as we also have & use cloth napkins on the regular!!!
I got some fun stencils & my youngest son & I not only color in our coloring books (YES I HAVE ADULT COLORING BOOKS!!!) BUT we also do stencils & all kinds of creative artsy projects. This is also helping him with his motor skills (he broke his writing arm at the beginning of the summer) & he’s now & even better writer than he was before he broke his arm!!! Bubbles in the backyard, jumping on the trampoline. A neighbor let us borrow their old Nintendo set for awhile (we finally got a switch for the family ~ we had previously been saving up for it as we couldn’t find all the parts to our old Wii games stuff 😬)!
If you buy second hand items for things like shoes (especially for those of us that issues with our feet), if the shoes are in good shape, just change the insoles!!! You can save a TON of money just by doing that!!!

Am I overlooking it?

In California Sears used to have a few scratch and dent stores. I bought every appliance from those. I live in a different state and don't even know if those exist anywhere anymore (is Sears even still in business?), but they aren't where I live. Last time I had to replace a major appliance I missed them so much!
These are such wonderful common sense tips. Many are great reminders.

When it comes to those excess presents, they can be ideal for charities collecting for needy children at Christmas, put in the Samaritan's Purse shoeboxes or other things you are asked to give to. Adding bargains you see throughout the year can also help.

Amazing video once again! You truly are my FAVORITE channel❤️
No is a complete sentence!
I can attest to the grocery pick up working. We have stopped bc our Kroger was dropping the ball quite a bit but I’m going WAY over budget. One I also like is that ads don't exist to save you money they exist to make you want to spend money.
Log what you spend and save what is leftover at the end of the month
My first DIY gave me that difficult “practical” lesson. So true!
And please do a video for chipotle rice (if you haven’t already)!
Each week I check my checking account. I bring my last number to zero. Say my checking account states $255.55 I will transfer $5.55 to my savings. It's small but adds up over time especially if your starting out with saving money

Love that!
My hint: Learn the rule of 6/12. Money invested at 6% will double every 12 years; money invested at 12% will double every 6 years. Keep investing at the highest return you can get in order to build wealth. Oh, and stop watching haul videos. They make you think you "need" all that stuff.
Uh, we buy refurbished phones in our house. My bank statement surely tells me that it is NOT gross.
The opposite of gross.
Can you do a video on your apple jam?? :)
I think I have an Instagram highlight saved. But I probably won’t make a video. Sorry. No one watches those and it’s a lot of work for such few views.

I don’t have Instagram 🤷♀️
I like buying reduced meats, wrapping them in freezer paper & food saving it for later. I wouldn't trade my food saver for anything!!!
We track our net worth every quarter and I can attest to how motivational it is. We keep it simple with bank/investment accounts and (rough) home equity on the positive side and our sole debt, our mortgage, on the other.
I meal prep for the week for my entire family and my grocery bill is way down.
I crochet badly. I only enjoy doing a single crochet. It doesn’t matter. I make dish cloths. Enjoy!
Good morning
You're not gross, Lydia. Xxxx
Go to the grocery store only once a week when possible.
Please save for retirement even if just a few dollars a week. Even if you follow Dave Ramsey, who says NOT to participate in your companies match when paying off debt. That is BAD advice. This is coming from a retired lady!
👏👏👏👏
Buy something, use it once, and then return it.
Excellent tips Lydia!!!!!
