I’ve flown long haul premium economy from Australia on two occasions to L.A. and London. Managed to get both trips on the bidding upgrade system for an extra $500 each way. Gotta say I would never fly long haul in basic economy again but I also wouldn’t pay full price for premium economy, I’d go business as a treat as I only do it every 10 years.

Despite its drawbacks, I always find myself going back to flying Emirates because there's a level of consistency you get with them. Even on their "worst" days, the experience is much better than most other airlines.

I flew the A380 at the start of the year to Auckland in Premium Economy and I would say it was definitely worth it for that 16 hour journey with the increased leg room, on shorter routes such as Singapore I think you are still better off in economy as its not too long. EDIT: Also never take the last row in the middle of the premium economy cabin as all you hear is the banging and clanging in the galley all flight long.

As a “mature” traveller, I have now reached the point where I find the long haul flights in economy unbearable. Last year I flew from Melbourne to London on Singapore Airlines, Premium Economy and really for me that extra legroom was worth the money. SIA also included free wifi which was a bonus, as you say adequate for sending updates to loved ones. Also NO amenities kits, I also thought that was rather cheap given how much extra you are paying. Another surprising thing was that there was no separate drinks service, I found out later drinks are now on request, also I thought “cheap” Food was ok without being much better than economy. I have booked my next flight to Cape Town from Melbourne early next year on SIA in Premium Economy, purely because I now need that extra comfort, rather than because it represents good value.

I fly mainly with StarAlliance between North America and Europe, by default, I always aim to book Premium Economy, you enter the plane after Business, have space for your carry-on since less person, better food, more fidelity points for futur business ticket and for the price it's a great product.

I flew Premium Economy on Air New Zealand and it was a case of receiving an email and putting in a bid to upgrade to Premium Economy, I put in $100 and it was accepted a few days before my flight. I really liked it. The most entertaining part of the flight was when during meal service the girl sitting next to me stated she was vegan and the flight attendant offered her the chicken. I had a chuckle 😅

Hi Josh. I think from a revenue point. Airlines will add more and more Premium Economy cabins, as they can fit more seats into the space than Business. They will reduce Business Class seating. Then continue to increase the price of Premium Economy but offer a lesser service than Business. Through time, Business Class may be removed and the service in Premium improved, thus pushing the price up

  • @DwaynettaD

The problem with most premium economies is that the arm rests are fixed. Sometimes; on a quieter flight; you’re better in economy because if you get two to three seats to yourself you can lay down; whereas in premium economy even if you have a row to yourself you can’t move armrests and lay down.

Premium Economy isn't defined by Webster's Dictionary. It is defined by the individual airlines. Here in the US, I have flown Premium Economy on Alaska Airlines. All Premium Economy provides is extra legroom and a seat just behind the first class cabin, which helps with boarding and deplaning - but that's it. No extra food, no towel service, no welcome beverage, etc. Just more legroom and a seat near the front of the plane.

    • @ThePolaroid669

deplaning is NOT a word. You didn't plane the aeroplane, therefore you can't deplane it. You disembarked the aircraft.

Premium Econ is basically evolving into business class from 20 years ago w/ regard to the hard product. That being said I’m not sure how the nomenclature has evolved to make this be considered a “premium economy” seat and how a “business class” seat is now what we’d use to call first class. Your friend might be onto something but I think they will just bring back the first class cabin and rebrand premium eco as business

40 years ago (not 20). Think back to when QF introduced the first biz class with a surcharge and a J fare designator at the start of the 1980s. Back then biz class was configured 2-4-2 on the 747's lower deck.

Compared to premium economy, I've found business class has a few extra ground perks, wider seats, reduced seats/bathroom ratio, free alcohol, better meal selection, lay-flat seats, and importantly.. the seats in business class have more privacy with partitions and doors.
Premium economy has its place on flagship carriers like this. Would I pay $11,000 for business class on Emirates going from Miami to Dubai? NO! But I would pay $3000 to be treated like a human. And that's where premium economy comes in.

    • @seancatacombs
      @seancatacombs 6 годин тому +1

Right now Premium Economy tickets have the best ROI for airlines compared to all other cabins - the price hike relative to level of service you get is the most in their favor. Remember those "angled lie-flat seats" from business class 20 years ago? I can definitely see those making a comeback in PE if airlines can retrofit them cheaply. JAL really feels like it's gearing up to that - their new PE seat already looks exactly like that Business seat of 20 years ago.

I get those amenity kits and give them away to my family as souvenirs. They are very nice (after all I paid for them) but when I think about the 13 hour flight I take to/from dubai, they can just as easily give you a small disposable toothbrush or stock the bathroom with basic amenities.

The A380 is a very special place.
When you fly the Emirates A380, you have a much larger, much more spacious, much quieter cabin than you'll get with any other airline. My first A380 flight was from JFK to Dubai with Emirates A380 and once I witnessed what a great plane it was, I was determined to fly their business class. I returned on business class, round trip, to Maldives. Not cheap at all from here: $4700 round trip.
But the economy can be problematic when it's 100% full, has screaming babies or has people trying to get you to give up your seat to them so they can sit with their families. That's happened to me thrice. Once I had booked that special seat near the exit where there's a window seat but no seat in front of you - only to have a stewardess force me to switch seats because my legs were too long. BISH - that's the reason I paid for that seat in the first place.
So Now I ONLY FLY BUSINESS CLASS.
Premium Economy is nice but they do STUPID THINGS to restrict the seat space. That STUPID LITTLE TRAY TABLE NEAR YOUR KNEES FOR EXAMPLE. It may not bother you because you're smaller, but it can be very annoying - for a 13 hour flight - especially to someone who is 6'6" like me.
The other issue is the recline of the forward seat. Having the passenger in front of you reclining can be extremely annoying.
Then there's the tray tables that come out of the armrest. It takes up space and the range of adjustment isn't luxurious. It's restrictive.
I fly Business Class. Pay Extra. Avoid dealing with these other annoyances.
You just need to ensure you book a window seat with the mini bar between you and the aisle.

Agree with your statement about EK crew.
I’ve been flying Emirates for well over a decade and there has definitely been a quality shift during that time.
Back in 2010, almost all crews were amazing, now I’d say 30% are there to provide great service, 70% are there to party in Dubai and don’t care about the passengers they serve.
It used to be that the crew would constantly walk the cabin to ensure people were comfortable, now you tend to find them grouped in the galley discussing which club they went to during the week, if you dare interrupt you become an inconvenience and are treated as such.
As a result, EK as a product has been devalued significantly during my time travelling with them (I live in Dubai, so this is frequent).
I’ve flown their Premium recently and it’s ok, but not outstanding, I actually prefer (shocked to even say this) the BA PE product.

Love PE if the price is right. Often get it on Air Canada on North American flights using widebodies, at a good price at time of check-in. AC's is wonderful and leaps and bounds ahead of standard Y. Dedicated cabin, domestic business class seats, cocktail table, large IFE screen, meals on China almost on par with domestic business class, dedicated FA, bar trolley like domestic business class, complementary alcohol on domestic wide bodies served in the business class glassware, use of business class washrooms. Only gripe, no curtain between Y and Y+ hence Y passengers coming through our dedicated cabin and using our lavs, especially mom's with kids.

All depends on the price relativity.
At most worth 50% more than Economy. And would need to be half the price of Business.
Reality is an aircraft you pay for floorspace (which is the limiting factor). Agree that the food and other soft product is more like Business (similar to QF and SQ) whereas other airlines Premium is closer to Economy.

In my opinion Premium Economy serves a specific target group.
These passengers cannot necessarily afford Business Class, and in the past automatically fell into the Economy group seating. Now they have the option to upgrade. For Economy passengers with back problems, the Premium Cabin helps a lot. The Premium Economy passenger may still enjoy the hustle and bustle of the airport and not find a need for a lounge. The extras are where they need it: in the air.

I have been a Skywards Gold member and have flown with Emirates regularly since relocating to Dubai in 2017. Unfortunately, you're quite right about the crew. In my experience, the most polite and proactive members tend to be from the Far East and South Asia, certainly fitting into the commendable 70% you mentioned. As a Brit, I’ve noticed that the crew from the UK and Australia often seem less engaged in their work, and many would fall into the remaining 30%. Of course, this is not a sweeping generalisation, as some are indeed hospitable and proactive, but a significant number, particularly those under 30, seem indifferent. I frequently chat with the UK-based flight attendants, and many admit they are with Emirates for only a few years, primarily to earn some money and explore the world. Regarding Premium Economy on the A380, it occasionally costs as much as flying Business Class on the B777, but even so, it’s a pleasant addition overall.

I have flown SYD to LHR via DXB on Premium Economy on EK. Overall I really liked it, my main criticism is that if your tall like me (6'4) the foot rest pushes your knees up and the position for sleeping isn't the best

I think al "premium" issue is big problem for the airlines and passangers. Take turkish airlines which tp have 3 classes but now have only bussiness and economy. It is much more easier to manage and cost saver for all

Flew Premium economy on A380 BA and it was much better than Emirates. Also flew Premium economy Virgin and that was same sort of lay out, stopped flying Emirates as it's a really long flight.

PE not really worth it, unfortunately.
Hmmm. 2-4-2? Imagine being stuck in the middle of the 4. 💩
Better to get a good business class seat or just stick with normal economy, perhaps with an exit row seat.

Premium economy a waste of money? Depends on what airline you’re flying with and what their premium economy offers. But looking at some of those fares, you’d be better off just sticking with economy.

Beautiful video. I loved the Emirates premium economy class. Seat is well designed and looks luxurious. Inflight services and food was very good. But not happy with the fact that no amenity kit was provided. Similarly no coffee was served after lunch. Atleast the crew could have asked if you would like to have some coffee. Overall, it was ok . They can add a lot more benefits for premium economy passengers in the coming time to enhance its popularity.

  • @leighpilgrim2071

The argument about amenity kits, SQ have apparently said they are a waste of money for airlines. If you think about it, most of the contents can be purchased from your local store for a "dollar"........however, admittedly, im a fan of the actually small cases you receive some airlines provide

I flew with Emirates for the first time this July and while I was in economy class, I did not expect such bad service. From headphones, blankets etc being taken 45 minutes before landing, demanding to take my tray while I was still eating (we received our meal last yet they wanted to collect our trays first) and twice I saw bread rolls dropped on the floor, picked up and given to a passenger.
I usually fly Qatar but thought I'd try Emirates for a change, never again.

I don't think we'll see true bed seats in Premium Economy, more likely a comeback of those "angled lie-flat seats" from Business Class in the 2000s. JAL might be the ones to pioneer this. Their Premium Economy already has hardshell seats reminiscent of those old school Business cabins.

Josh emirates has upgraded their 777 With new business class. Josh but in their a350’s one thing which I like is that they’re going for 2-3-2 layout and by the way I think emirates flights were the best flights ever and I took it in 2016.

I think regular economy has become so uncomfortable and awful over the past 20 years that premium economy is now a must and is slightly nicer than what regular economy was like long haul in the 70s and 80s. But I agree it is sometimes way over priced that sometimes its better to just pay the little extra for business class

EK and its Gulf rivals are facing a difficult time right now. Regional conflict is leading to flight diversions and cancellations which impact on their hub operations.
