I've recently had a client come back to me saying that their architect told them to keep looking and keep looking and keep looking and you will eventually get someone to do the job dirt cheap so just reflecting on that I blame the Architects on some of the jobs and I find it really frustrating. I personally the last few years put in the boot when it comes into the price, if they want to pay it they want to pay it if they don't they don't. Over here in the Republic of Ireland it's very hard for a foreigner to get into the trade or at least be a "registered electrical contractor" which leads to a lot of foreigners doing illegal works. I am assuming it's the same in the UK

That board in its current configuration requires 100mA type S protection for a TT system. Your connections to the RCD are only single insulated. There is a section at the back of the IET Guide to Consumer Units that deals with this.

The price was right but he [owner of the house] got some of those people who use those kinds of people who have no qualification and uses them very very cheap. Then they get someone they know to come and give them the certificate of inspection and testing and this is how they do it now. In one place I was called to do a job, I ask the boss where are the certificates of inspection and testing and wiring map etc? Guess what? He had none. I'm not assuming that someone who quotes cheaper will do an inferior job. In fact, it is perhaps likely that the cheaper quoter may do an identical or even better job. The market is elastic. It is a basic mathematical principle of supply and demand.
My example was also anecdotal, from personal experience. I just don't like being put into a dutch auction; particularity when I have done all of the initial and on-going consultation, drawing up plans and pricing on materials only for the customer to pass on my intellectual property and my time expended to another business. It's insulating, particularly when the same customer asks me to re-attend to put dangerous and shoddy workmanship right.

I think the 100mA TD RCD is still desirable as it stops everything 'earthed/bonded' becoming live in the event of a 30mA RCD failure, i.e. a backup RCD facility, even though not required by any means.
What about when somebody comes to fit an EV-changing-point ? They usually want MCB non-rcd SWA submain ... though I guess for a TT supply you could use a type-A RCBO and a downstream 'simple' charger (not anderson/zappi/etc)!..

@13:25 - nothing is protecting those cables other than the electronics and fuses down stream. If you think on it, it does make sense but you’re correct in highlighting the fact you can wire it incorrectly and in theory have a whole install load coming back with full current through those crimped cables at the incomer switch.
I always go for split boards, 100ma RCB, no more than a total combined load of ~40A on each side peak. Allowing for sine spikes inside of 100ms but otherwise rate each half for 40, so 80 total. That’s based on a 100A supply.
But I get what you mean by asking what protects those since you are correct, it just means a lot of faults (infact every fault) would need to ALMOST happen simultaneously for it to be a factor. Otherwise you have MCB, then fuse to load and in fault condition a 100ms RCD. So those supply leads ain’t ever getting close to their rating. That’s how I see the logic anyway.

That is a fair price man. Here in US I'd charge almost double that but of course in US Dollars. There are always some cheap clients that want quality job for cheap price. They can't have a cake and eat it too. I recently bid on a job for a guy and after I gave him the quote, he liked it but he wanted to do some of the work himself. One of those know enough to be dangerous kinds. He wasted my time so I reciprocated and in the end told him can't do it due to liability. I also charge double those clients who hire fly by nights that run away without competing the job, and clients that are wannabe sparky and want me to fix their fuck ups...

Great vid I was way more expensive in my head 😂😂
As for the cottage job stick to your price unless it’s got a possibility of future works ie builder/company with projects!
I priced a rewire once for a friend of a friend empty house for £2800 he got a guy in for a thousand pounds less 🤦🏻‍♂️ anyway fast forward 2 years and I had a phone call off a lady who needed a house signing off after her son had had a guy rewire the house and never signed it off now they needed it as they were selling It. The prospective buyers had paid for an Eicr to be done there were 19 C1/C2’s little did she know I had lost the job to this “electrician” as you can guess I took great pleasure in passing my judgement on what had happened 😂😂
As I say stick to your prices and do it properly as you do mate. 👍🏻

Some years ago I quoted to rewire a 1930,s house, three bedroom. Was told we have got a lower price, oh pok then. Some time after I was rather surprised when the client contacted me and wanted me to call round, when I got there, they wanted my opion on what had been done.Well; every, switch ,socket, etc, surface, which had been flush previous, the "electrician" had said all the fittings had to be surface as that was the "regulations".Exterior wall lights, only half way up the wall, as apparently it was against the "regulations" for them to be any higher. One way switch's on up side down, back boxes fied with one screw and most loose on the wall.At every ceiling rose, the brown and blue of the pendent , out of the rose, as the "electrician" had not even bothered to hook them up in the ceiling rose. That and other things, well you pays your money and you pays your price.

I live in rented accom..and I tell you what, I wish the landlord contracted pro's like you.
Before I moved here, this place had suffered a poor conversion from commercial use to domestic dwelling, with no planning permission for the loft extension - so you can imagine the kinds of contractors the landlord sends here.
Watching your channel is like a breath of fresh air - you're every bit a pro.
The last contractor (I won't call him a sparky) the landlord sent here was fitting a pendant light when he actually fried himself and tripped all the switches on the board - this was *after* he refused my offer to use my touch-tester, and a multimeter.
"It's ok", he said, "I already got one" *bang*.
He used my test equipment after that.
He hadn't isolated at the board - he'd flipped the wrong fuse in there.
He was halfway through the job when the landlord called him away to do some pointing outside instead.
    Yup - pointing.
When he ran out, I didn't realise it at the time but he'd left my ladders up in the middle of the room, and he'd left all the live wires dangling from the ceiling. Worse, he'd left the switch hanging out the wall - live.
LOL..he even took the screws with him.
I found this out a couple of hours later when I was groping blind for the light switch in the pitch dark, and found myself groping at the exposed back of the switchplate. It was pure luck I didn't get a jolt.
Yeah, next day I banned the contractor from the house and told him the landlord was taking advantage of him, and then I freaked at the landlord - esp being as the landlord didn't even get it sorted when I tried to contact him straight after.
I'm not at all confident about house electrics, but because the kid had actually took the screws too, I had to cannibalise some screws before I could fix the plate to the wall with a torch in my mouth, and after isolating the whole house at the board because the light breaker didn't actually isolate the lights.
I've called environmental health, and am contacting trading standards over it, and because of the complete lack of fire safety here. This place is a death-trap.
What with all the other issues uncovered here lately, I haven't slept a wink in weeks.
The landlord's got the same kid doing the electrics in a couple of properties he's 'renovating'. Scary.

Chris, don’t adjust your prices. You cannot win them all. Your quality of workmanship speaks for itself. 👍🏼. Lower price, isn’t always better as you well know & there are so many cowboys out there. The cottage price was very reasonable. There is no need to separate the earth rods on that install. Connect them all through, it’s not like TN to TT. With regards to dual rcd boards on TT, the on-site guide recommends that the main switch is swapped out for a 100ma T.D, because from the main switch the live conductors to the top of the RCD’s are not double insulated. I’ve had lengthy conversations with the tech helpline & they told me exactly what they told you, the likely hood of anything happening is so low. However as I work on a lot of TT properties, I now only install RCBO boards which isn’t good for the client, considering the price. I’d rather be safe than sorry. Also wylex do a switched neutral rcbo’s, which is great for TT as it switching both poles for isolation purposes.

Can’t believe tech are happy for a load of single insulated cables not being protected against fault current in a large metal enclosure. It sounds far more dangerous than just using a plastic dB . I’d use rcbo every time on a tt but if I had to use dual rcd I’d definitely put the upfront 100 ma for my own peace of mind .

I just priced (yesterday) partial rewire, new service on the outside, new panel, 4 GFCI receps (rcbo in an outlet). wire a mini split AC and a regular AC was $4400. No wall patching. Check out the on-site guide it says to use 100 ma if your using dual rcd. Use rcbo board instead where you only have the incoming tails which aren’t protected but are double insulated and glanced.
