One day, I saw a movie where some Japanese Police Officers were doing fast and tight U-turn. It was so great...
So I decided to try it, to undersand it, and here is the movie I did to show it to you. But to do it, you'll need to understand some new things about some usual techniques, as you will see in the movie :)

Great job. In the US this is taught in "ride like a cop" classes. Control your speed with the rear brake (when required) and maintain a constant throttle position and slipping clutch. Establish a full-lock turn and -- If the bike starts to fall to the inside -- add some power with the clutch. It takes some practice, but works well. I paid to drop someone else's bike while learning! :)

But the way descibed here is not the same than the US police officer. Here, we lean and reduce speed to have the handlebar in full lock. So to start the U-turn, you need to create some speed, and we don't turn the handlebar, it turns itself. Then, in full lock, you have to have a constant speed, and increase it only when the rear wheel ends the turn ;)
And you can do it without the clutch (but maybe not with all bike).
This shit is standard on exams in the netherlands.

@@ashyswami1857 We actually have to pass a pretty tough vehicle control exam first before a second in-traffic exam. It includes (among other things) tight eights & U-turns, emergency collision avoidance swerving and very low speed handling. If you're interested to learn more look up " AVB examen " on UA-cam.

Thanks for the video! I'm surprised this is considered new or unusual for many ...this technique of "tipping the bike in" for slow speed turns and counter steering was taught extensively at a motorcycle safety course I took several years ago to obtain my road license in Canada.
It's a vital skill and not just to pull a u turn but useful in many instances especially if you ride on congested city streets.

But I made this video to show that you can counter steer even at low speed, and more over, if you brake, you will not fall. Last thing, you don't need to look where you want to go (this allows you to look around you about traffic), and you don't need to do counter weight...
Great tutorial. My local instructor runs an 2 day dvanced rider course where this and other advanced riding methods are taught and you use their bikes so no worries about dropping or damaging your own. I’m definitely booking on the course this year.

Just found this channel and this video which is the best explanation and demonstration of counter steering I have seen and the only one which I actually get! As a fairly new rider I have struggled to grasp this concept. I had booked a 2 day course covering stuff like this...but it’s cancelled due to the virus 😕 so looking on UA-cam for more info. You're welcome :) But when I did this video, it was to shown that you can counter steer even at low speed if you want.
i recommend practicing this also in a slope. start u-turning upward, lean the body in full lock state and raise the body in downward direction. the point is to raise the body by using clutch and throttle while u-turning.

Thank you for your incredible videos. By breaking down the individual steps and explaining what is going on, the seen and unseen, you allow me to create an understanding in my head that dramatically improves my riding skills. Other instructors will tell you to do things but they don't explain the "why". You breakdown and explain the "why" which helps me understand what is going on and how I can improve my riding. So much that we do in controlling a motorcycle is unseen because it happens so fast, or we aren't even aware it is happening. Your brilliant videos fill in a lot of the blanks for me. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Maybe one day soon I'll even be able to do a U-turn in a 5 meter radius (16.4 feet). :)

I recommend you check both of those channels out..Practice..THOSE drills. I GUARAN..DAMN..tee you...you WILL improve if you practice even once weekly let alone a few times weekly for just an hour tops each time.

I like doing Japanese style U-turns.Keep in mind things happen much quicker when counter steering at low or no speed.Total clutch control is a must.
This uturn, the police officer, - according to me -, is nice when the bike is stopped, but I prefer the Japanese uturn, without counter steering and without using the clutch ;)

I have been using this method for years without knowing it was a big deal. My bike is a Yamaha FJR1300 so if I can do it on that, you can do it on anything.

This is incredibly useful! Obviously they teach counter-steering in the MSF classes, especially for U-turns, but not from a stop, and not in that short of a distance!
I am going to practice this U-turn technique from a stop, until I have it mastered!

It is a honor that you have considered my email for reply. My mother told me as a kid after I had just walked into into a parking meter "Watch where you are going"! I have taught hundreds of students how to ride a motorcycle in the mid "80. Many things have change thru the years as more information becomes apparent but looking where you going is NOT one of them. Maybe it is a language barrier between us. OF COURSE you don't fixate on any one object as in your roundabout example but certainly one of the places you better look is where you are going.
I do not base my information on "myth of the look, because every body tell it" I have seen it over and over and over, after teaching beginning students, Police, arm forces. If they can't do the exercise they are not looking where they want to go.
I teach to my student to not look, and they can do it. So your student can't do, mine can.
We just don't ride the same way, the look is only a small part of everything. I don't ever teach anymore counter weight and counter steering, and it works too.
You can do a good job from a lot of years, but you are always doing the same.
I don't do the same thing than you.
It is like you are teaching to do box, and I am teaching judo :)

When I did my motorcycle licence test in Australia, I think it was 1978, you had to do figure 8s within the space of four carparks. In this video the guy does a U turn in two spaces, imagine two more, so two by two. If your feet touched the ground it was a fail. I dunno if they still do it or not. The hardest part was trusting your own skills and throttle control, because once you lean it over you have to keep the speed up or over she goes. Once you get the hang of it, you wonder what all the fuss was about.

Great video, it's good to know the theory behind it. I've just bought an ST1300, having last ridden a heavy bike 30 years ago I was afraid to collect if from the dealer. I'll practice this technique on my scooter, then the ST... first on large circles.

The only way to turn so tight on a sports bike since the handle bar turns is really limited on a sports bike. The best tutorial ever.

The geometry on the front steering of a motorcycle is quite complex and the contact point with respect to the hinge is so important. One does not need too much self centring action on a motorcycle as it could go unstable. Normally the geometry is such that the contact point is in line with the axis of the hinge, but it is not as simple as that.

You are right; well done.
But there is also a second reason to point the front wheel in the opposite direction of the turn:
doing so gives you an extra 20 cm (or somewhat) to make the diameter of the turning circle larger, while the main body of the bike stays more or less in the same position.
It might seem not much, but in thight corners (and certainly where there are curbstones on both sides) it gives you that extra space to make the turn.
Back in the days, we were thaught to do that in Belgian Federal Police Riding School ...

Thank you :) but for me, the fact that the bike goes first to the opposite direction is not good: you loose some space at the beginning of the U-turn, especially with curbstones. What you win at the end, you loose it at the beginning. I should compare with the other U-turn lol

This manouvre is one of several basics when you learn to ride a motorcycle in the Netherlands.
We even learn tot make a figure eight the same way.
Cool. But I had some people coming from the Netherland during some training courses, and they didn't do it... and I don't really like this u-turn, I prefer the Energetic Drivability U-turn :)
I'm taking motorcycle lessons in the Netherlands and right from the first lesson I had this is exactly what I learned. Making u turns and 8 turns.

I tried this with a 2014 Valkyrie. I’ve been riding 3 months. I can’t make the turn as smooth, but I can do it. Took two hours. I had to get comfortable with how the bike feels in full steering lock. I had to put my foot down a lot at first, but then I found at 4 mph the bike won’t fall over!! I had to work up to counter steer before turning. Counter steer really helps to cut the angle of the turn. Didn’t drop my bike once. I have an ‘18 goldwing on order and I needed to figure this out first. Take your time and good luck. If you keep your speed constant bike won’t fall. One more thing helped a lot to push opposite side leg against tank during the turn and shifting weight across the seat, with turn side knee extended.

I have used this technique for about 6 months now with my 2015 BMW R1200RT and it works great and I'm over 76 years old.. I've even used the U-Turn technique on gravel roads!! NO GUTS NO GLORY! Ole dogs can learn new tricks and I've been riding for over 60 years!! I've seen videos on U-Tube of guy high siding, because it really looks like they used this technique negatively and the bikes end up going straight off of the road! As the TV ad use to say: "Try it Mikey likes it!"

It seems that this video adds "countersteer first, using a burst of acceleration, to lean over faster" to the beginning of the Japanese (street) U turn technique.
Yop, it adds the counter steer first, as you say. But this means that counter-steer only leans, but it is not enough to go where you want to go :)
Countersteering *initiates* the turn. Get the bike to lean first. Then let it do what it needs to do. Don't get in its way. :)

I think booking a lesson is a better choice, as you can try first on a bike with crash bar, just to be able to try without fear. But I am not sure that lot of driving school are showing this kind of u-turn, in which you have to be able to brake when the bike is leaned.

Simple. Countersteer just before the turn to throw all the weight the direction you're turning. The bars automatically turn the way you want to go..
I did this accidentally in a parking lot earlier. Couldn't do it again, but found this video now it make's sense.

I cannot wrap my head around this, you push the handlebar right, and the bike goes left? Whoa...I ride a bicycle frequently and i've never noticed this till now. So not only must you use the handlebars, but also leaning body position.. My head is spinning.. Bike lessons will be really fun learning experience I think lol.
