If The Brutalist ends up winning nothing at the Oscars either because A24 couldn’t promote it or it’s just too “long and sad” for their taste, cinema takes a big blow.
This year is the year I got fed up with the inaccessibility to film. The Brutalist, as a single examplw of many doesn't even come put where I am for another month, and it's been frustrating for months.
I live in an area with only a multiplex, and that multiplex pretty much only shows blockbusters. But a downtown theater that recently reopened is dipping it's toes into becoming a combination of performance venue and rep theater. I just saw Princess Bride in it.
I think the substance is also a deeper film than people give it credit for, love reading it as a parasitic mother/ daughter relationship For me that’s the movie of the year, idc if people say the third act lost them, for me I didn’t want it to end any other way
I too think it's deeper than people give it credit for. The mother/daughter parasitic relationship was one layer that I too noticed. Another was the similarly parasitic relationship between our authentic selves and the person we pretend to be to live up to the expectations of others and gain external validation. The more we bury our authentic self, the more it festers and makes us feel a growing void of dissatisfaction and self-loathing. The body horror felt like a visceral visual representation of the psychological impact of repressing our authenticity.

I honestly feel like I'm missing something with the Dune hype. They're very well made and I enjoy them, but I just can't see the masterpieces everyone else sees in them. I saw them in theaters, had a good experience, and zero desire to rewatch since.
More people need to watch The Outrun! One of my favourte movies this year besides A Real Pain, All Of Us Strangers, Poor Things, The Holdovers, May December, Io Capitano, The seed of the sacred fig, Kinds of Kindness, The Boy and the Heron, The Substance, Wild Robots etc. (all 2024 releases in Germany).
We literally have the exact same taste. All of Us Strangers, The Holdovers, May December, and Poor Things were in my top 5 for 2023 in that order (I'm in the US so they were released here earlier), and The Outrun and A Real Pain, along with His Three Daughters, are my top 3 of 2024. I wish more people were talking about The Outrun!
It's always easy to come up with excuses and talk how the situation "isn't that bad". "No Other Land" really gets you to understand how it feels when some soldiers come over and just "decide" that your home isn't your home anymore. It's incredibly cruel. Unfortunately ths people who ought to be watching this won't and will just say that it's propaganda taking things out of context. I cannot imagine any circumstance where this kind of thing could ever be justifiable.
It''s so frustrating that so many of these film have either had a limited run or haven't come out yet for the UK! were forever playing catch-up! Challlengers was my number 1, Anora was my number 2 and Sing Sing was my number 3 :)

The Outrun - _Felt like mood piece. Great leading performance from Saoirse Ronan. Not for everyone though._ 09. Anora - _One of the most entertaining movies I've seen all year. Funny, tragic and everything in between._ 08. Look Back - _This movie did more in under an hour than most movies do in their entirety. Not quite a tear-jerker I was hoping it to be but still a great watch._ 07. Flow - _This came out of nowhere and absolutely blew me away. A gem of a film that every animation fan should seek out._ 06. The Substance - _A tragedy disguised as a body horror. An instant genre classic._ 05. Challengers - _Fun, tense, energetic, sexy. Loved the way it was shot and the score just made all of that even better._ 04. Dune: Part Two - _The culmination of everything that had been build up from the first movie. Truly epic in every sense of the word._ 03. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga - _Had huge expectations going in and it did not disappoint at the slightest. One of the best revenge stories I've seen in recent years. I don't think its far-fetched to say that Furiosa is one of the best prequels of all time._ 02. The Wild Robot - _DreamWorks' best since Kung Fu Panda. Insanely heartfelt, kinda reminds me of the "Bye Bye Butterfree" episode of Pokemon. Loved the score._ 01. How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies - _The most wholesome and bittersweet movie of the whole year. I wasn't going to watch it at first since my grandmother passed away recently and I was afraid of the emotional toll that it might have on me but I'm very glad I watched it. It actually made me feel better and reminded me of all the fond memories I shared with her. I did cried at the end though._

You should check out "The End", "Exhibiting Forgiveness", and "Small Things Like These"... as well as "The Taste of Things". They were all way oveshadowed in my opinion and I could see them all making it in the top 20.

I think my favorite 2024 film I saw this year was Dune Part 2, but in fairness I did only see six films released this year. Hoping to get to more of them this year as they enter streaming!

My favorites were Dune Part II, Twisters, The Wild Robot, & Sonic The Hedgehog 3!! Edit: Twisters was memorable for me despite no returning characters, but taking place in the same universe as the original Twister movie as its similar alike its predecessor. It's references from Dorothy to the Ram truck felt like a Twister movie that should have happened with Bill Paxton but we miss The Extreme!!
As a woman, I strongly disagree with your take on Anora. It’s not a step forward at all. It was so obviously written and directed by a man. The living room scene was atrocious. Anora is fighting with multiple men because they want to tie her up and hold her hostage (and at one point she screams “R*pe”) and we are supposed to find this funny??? And at the end when she initiates sex with Igor, he is so ready to just go for it even though he has just seen the shit that she went through the day before and should understand that she is clearly in a vulnerable state. I did like the message of the end, but it would have hit so much harder if he had rejected her sexual advances. Also, Anora as a character was so one-dimensional. We get almost no insight into her life outside of her job. Why did she go into sex work in the first place? Why is she so insistent that she and Vanya love each other and that they have to stay married? Someone on Reddit said “It doesn’t feel like Ani is the main character, it feels like she’s just there and things are just happening” and I feel like that’s an accurate description of the movie.
Re: Substance: I also have become obsessed with rewatching the film, and I gotta say, while I understand why some people may be put off by the lack of subtlety, is there a subtle way to discuss a story about how a woman so obssessed with impossible beauty standards that she literally turns herself into a monster? and in addition, it sometimes feels like the lack of subtlety is the film taunting us as a society by saying "we'll be more subtle if you can prove you can understand it when it's this obvious". which, based on the past year, we clearly fail at

Just out of curiosity, thoughts on how hard it has been for regular people to see these films? I actively sought many of these films out throughout the year and failed to see them, in particular nickel boys, no other land, didi, a different man, and the brutalist. i feel like some great films got pushed to the side too quick by their studios and i’m sorta worried that it’s a new trend to attempt to get some type of BUY NOW BEFORE ITS GONE promotion for certain films.
I illegally download them. If I love the movie I buy the physical copy. I don’t like movie theaters. I know everyone goes wild with the “gotta see it on a big screen”
Viêt & Nam by Trương Minh Quý is probably my fave film of the year, idk if it's been in american theaters but it's one of the most beautiful uses of the colour black I've ever seen on film
Lot of great movies this year. But because of the lack of wide release, I wasn't able to see Conclave, Queer, Anora, Juror #2, Memoir of a Snail, The Brutalist, Nickel Boys, or Emilia Perez--all of which I would have seen in theaters if available! Studios are just willfully gutting the potential audiences of their own movies en masse. Rough.
Thank goodness a big film voice that didn’t forget about Dune man. Been so disheartening to see the bias we all know in award season to more recent movies swipe this masterpiece away. Movie literally changed my life.

"Comically unsubtle" is probably the most apt description of The Substance that I have heard this year. Still a kick-ass movie, though.

Dune Part 2 in the IMAX was the definition of an epic movie. It's one of very few movies where the IMAX sound was the best way to watch it.

I think my favorite 2024 film I saw this year was Dune Part 2, but in fairness I did only see six films released this year. Hoping to get to more of them this year as they enter streaming!

Edit: Twisters was memorable for me despite no returning characters, but taking place in the same universe as the original Twister movie as its similar alike its predecessor. It's references from Dorothy to the Ram truck felt like a Twister movie that should have happened with Bill Paxton but we miss The Extreme!!
The music was atrocious and I found myself rooting for the storm by the end 😂
As a woman, I strongly disagree with your take on Anora. It’s not a step forward at all. It was so obviously written and directed by a man. The living room scene was atrocious. Anora is fighting with multiple men because they want to tie her up and hold her hostage (and at one point she screams “R*pe”) and we are supposed to find this funny??? And at the end when she initiates sex with Igor, he is so ready to just go for it even though he has just seen the shit that she went through the day before and should understand that she is clearly in a vulnerable state. I did like the message of the end, but it would have hit so much harder if he had rejected her sexual advances.
Also, Anora as a character was so one-dimensional. We get almost no insight into her life outside of her job. Why did she go into sex work in the first place? Why is she so insistent that she and Vanya love each other and that they have to stay married? Someone on Reddit said “It doesn’t feel like Ani is the main character, it feels like she’s just there and things are just happening” and I feel like that’s an accurate description of the movie.
Re: Substance: I also have become obsessed with rewatching the film, and I gotta say, while I understand why some people may be put off by the lack of subtlety, is there a subtle way to discuss a story about how a woman so obssessed with impossible beauty standards that she literally turns herself into a monster? and in addition, it sometimes feels like the lack of subtlety is the film taunting us as a society by saying "we'll be more subtle if you can prove you can understand it when it's this obvious". which, based on the past year, we clearly fail at

This film, aside from its 2024 Cannes Grand Prix win among various other accolades, has made me and almost every person who watched it feel something many movies haven't. It would be very very cool if you covered this film as you are one my favourite creators on film in youtube.

Just out of curiosity, thoughts on how hard it has been for regular people to see these films? I actively sought many of these films out throughout the year and failed to see them, in particular nickel boys, no other land, didi, a different man, and the brutalist. i feel like some great films got pushed to the side too quick by their studios and i’m sorta worried that it’s a new trend to attempt to get some type of BUY NOW BEFORE ITS GONE promotion for certain films.
I illegally download them. If I love the movie I buy the physical copy. I don’t like movie theaters. I know everyone goes wild with the “gotta see it on a big screen”

Viêt & Nam by Trương Minh Quý is probably my fave film of the year, idk if it's been in american theaters but it's one of the most beautiful uses of the colour black I've ever seen on film

Lot of great movies this year. But because of the lack of wide release, I wasn't able to see Conclave, Queer, Anora, Juror #2, Memoir of a Snail, The Brutalist, Nickel Boys, or Emilia Perez--all of which I would have seen in theaters if available! Studios are just willfully gutting the potential audiences of their own movies en masse. Rough.
