Argylle is the film that taught me WHY studios are so scared to take chances with original concepts nowadays. If Argylle’s billion plot twists that soon feel meaningless is what we get when studios try to be “original,” then maybe endless superhero movie content ain’t so bad. Seriously, Argylle is awful. It can’t be a comedy because the movie sheds its comedic overtones halfway through, it can’t be a drama because the first half is essentially saying “don’t take it seriously, it’s just goofy,” so what you’re left with is this meandering mess where characters change alliances on a whim solely because the plot says so, and no amount of foreshadowing makes it any less pretentious and hollow to me.
