Brilliant video/review. Interesting to learn that moped licences are still a thing 😂 they use to be here in the UK, but that got removed quite a long time ago. Anyway, yes, electric scooters...brilliant things, and definitely something that needs to be encouraged as a clean, cheap/affordable alternative to local/metropolitan public transport.
It was great to see you being recognised too 😊 by both car drivers and cyclists; what a lovely bunch Aucklanders are 😊

When we go for drives in our Atto 3 near Mandurah Western Australia ($5 off peak charge for 350-450km) we count EVs compared to Soul Red Mazdas. EVs have slowly overtaken Soul Red in the last year.
On your 15min journey Gavin, I counted 9 to 1 (rough count). NZ is definitely ahead of Western Australia in EV adoption. Well done NZ.

Brilliant review. I imagine a lot of people might skip this video because it is about a scooter, but they will miss out on a very good option. If I was more physically able I would definitely look at getting one, especially when it is about the same price as a half decent E-bike.

Yes a 50cc equivalent e scooter is all you need, unless you need to keep up with 100km traffic on the northern or southern motorways. I have a NIU EVO GT (125cc) electric scooter (6.5kw motor) 80km range and 114km speed. I feel very safe on this as I can keep up with traffic, and have power to overtake. But you need a bike license and rego is expensive.

We have a similar scooter here in Aus called Fonzarelli.
I’ve taken one for a spin round Brisbane.
They really are the best way to get around in a city.
The Fonz comes in a 50kmh restricted moped version, and an unlocked one that will hit 80 but requires a bike licence.
Being more outer suburbs, I would need the unrestricted one as there are a lot of 70kmh roads and a few 80kmh roads around here, but closer to the city the 50 will be all you ever need.
Sadly, I’m like diesel ute guy you met…desperately waiting for single cab EV work utes to hit the market at a not insane price…I need a 2.4m tray and 250km of range at a price point under $75k.
Hopefully the Isuzu E-Max or the Toyota Hilux Revo become more than concepts…everybody else showing EV utes are only doing dual cabs 😢

In my country (Belgium) your car license - if obtained before 2004 or thereabouts - is the ticket to a 125 cc/15 kW motorcycle. And the good thing is: they look at nominal power. So we can get a Zero S motorcycle with 60 hp peak power but a nominal power rating of 15 kW and drive it through traffic.
The only thing stopping me from getting one is... my spouse. A hurdle I'll never be able to tackle, I'm afraid ;)

I'm pretty sure that here, mopeds have to have pedals as well. MO for motor, PED for pedals. I've seen some that people have taken the pedals off, but it changes the classification as far as the law goes.

Walking is faster than a car in Auckland.
I don't know what scooters you have ridden , but obviously nothing above 100cc because most 125cc scooters will leave any car and many motorcycles at the lights.
I had to keep a 1250cc Suzuki Bandit in lower gears than I normally would have to keep up with a Yamaha T-Max scooter (500cc) on a motorway on ramp.
Scooters' acceleration benefits enormously from their CVT transmissions.

The downside is breathing in the fumes from all the petrol/diesel vehicles. For that reason, you are arguably still better off in an EV car (also a lot safer from being squished like a tomato). Also much more pleasant being in an EV car when the weather is raining/windy/cold and scooters can't carry passengers or anything more than a shopping bag's worth of cargo.

Electric bikes and scooters are uniquely different and certainly have a place for inner city commute.
I caution you about the taking a battery out to charge and carrying that in an Elevator/ Lift. ua-cam.com/video/3wfNecvBOdQ/v-deo.html
A thermal runaway incident in China a couple of years ago where the battery went into thermal detonation within 2 seconds and killed the guy in the lift.
Sure that was a rare occasion but for risk management charging larger cells in confined areas poses a real hazard that cannot be managed.
Fire is 50-60 times more toxic and explosive compared to a phone or a laptop.
Toxic gasses from LiFeP can kill even through skin exposure.
Also charging in underground car parks equally dangerous.
Charge all large batteries in open areas very well ventilated.
Risk management needs to be highlighted for electrification of mass vehicle and commuter adoption.
I am not being a doomsday sky is falling Henny Penny , just do things safely and have fun doing it.

I love your work Gav. But my grumpy side says.... please wear some decent gear (gloves, jacket at least), don't park on the footpath, don't ride in the green cycle lane/box (broadway/khyber pass Rd intersection) thanks.
Oh and lane splitting is ok. Cops will only stop you if you are being a dick doing it. Passing on the left is illegal unless you're on a bicycle. These e scooters are great until the battery dies prematurely. I've seen them go after a couple of years. Then it's uneconomical to replace them. A decent bicycle and some fitness is the way to go in AKL if you commute is under 20kms

"wonder if Im annoying ute drivers"
Scooters, regardless of the speed, annoy other drivers. I had a de-restricted moped, could do 70-75kmh. I would cruise around at 55-60. People would overtake me, just because they didnt want to be behind a scooter. They couldnt stand it. I nearly got into a fight with a BMW dickhead who tried to run into oncoming traffic instead of being behind me. Safety wise, a moped was worse than a pushbike or a motorbike. Worst of both worlds. :(.
