How do you tackle hand position in roundabouts? Just keep your left hand on the wheel as it turns, rather than cross over hands? I know the US isn't big on roundabouts but they are EVERYWHERE in NZ, UK and Australia so those buttons would be a serious problem

Real world comment from an owner since February who lives in a Portuguese city with over 200 (yes, 200) roundabouts: the indicator buttons are not a problem anymore, I trigger them without even looking at the wheel most times. It was weird the first week and that was it. Now I find stalks weird... and no, I'm not a fanboy, I critique everything I have, but this car has been a very pleasant experience. The only thing I really don't like is the lack of a proper rain sensor and Tesla Vision that you can't really trust while parking. Other than that... great experience.
The European Regulators have now said as of January 2026, to achieve a full five-star safety rating, carmakers must have physical buttons, stalks for indicators and wipers. Can't really see a 3 star Tesla being released, it would lower credibility, price and resale value.
It's not European Regulators, it is EuroNCAP who is a private nonprofit company who gives ratings for car safety. They want physical buttons for some functions for five star rating. Tesla has physical buttons for indicators, wipers, hazard lights.
Tesla voice control doesn’t give you audible feedback, instead you have to look at the screen to see feedback. Until I switched to another EV I never thought about it but it is a huge oversight, and I never saw anyone mention it in reviews. Especially bad when sending or reading texts in the car.
@@SamAlexCaldwell does it work well for writing and sending texts? Without looking at the screen? I don’t have a Tesla anymore, so I might have missed something, but I don’t think it works as well as Siri/Carplay which is almost flawless and in my language even.
@@SamAlexCaldwell after it takes dictation, does it read your message back to you and ask to send? From what I could gather you have to read your text on the screen to check what it typed? With Siri/Carplay you never even have to look at the screen. «She» reads your text back to you and ask if you want to send or edit. Texting from the car is just a «conversation» and you can keep your eyes on the road at all times.
I’m loving mine and in Australia where we have lots of roundabouts that we must indicate out of even when going straight (in NSW at least) but I prefer the haptic buttons. You can either put thumb on the indicator button you will need to indicate out with before turning the wheel upside down or feel for it knowing the button with the triangular edge on left is left indicator which is what RHS drivers need to push to exit roundabouts
I wouldn't drive one without drive select, indicators and wipers on stalks, and I just don't buy the "you can learn" thing, unless learning involved growing another appendage. I think there's 3rd party aftermarket options to solve these issues coming. Good all round car other than that, I've always been a closet fan of Tesla.
Indicators and wipers on stalks is a relatively new thing: Switches for these used to be mounted on the dashboard. Heck, directionals themselves are a relatively new thing: Learning to drive in the 1970s we were still required to learn hand signals!
Getting use to the stalks doesn't take long and I was use to them in about 3 days and I am over 65! I prefer them now and would not want to have stalks again. Some people don't like change nor keeping up with technology whereas I have been throught alot of changes in my lifetime so don't find it a problem.
Indicator stalks - very modern. The first car I experienced was my dad's Austin A35, and the indicators were controlled by a big Bakelite switch in the middle of the dash, twist it left or right, blinky tell-tale weak glow and plinky plinky noise to tell you it was still on as you drove off into the sunset 'cos it didn't cancel. Meanwhile, I'll just wait for folks who's first car used the semaphore flags (like Citroën Traction Avant)...😁
@@gannetripple It never fell out of where it was supposed to be, but just rotated one way or the other. But it was possible to drive forever with it blinking, so just like a retired New Yorker in Florida in that respect....😁
A point and a couple of questions: I live in the Googleverse (I have a Pixel phone and use the Chrome browser, etc.) If my phone is paired to my M3 I will receive and can send texts through the car's infotainment system: It will show and read texts aloud and I can respond vocally. The car also reads my calendar: If I have an appointment, navigation will have it routed when I start the car. So I don't really miss using Android Auto. You stated that you wish the M3 was peppier: Does NZ not have access to the full range of M3 varieties? We have four versions from which to choose in the US - ranging from 3.1 to 6.1 0-100kph. Now, about roundabouts: In the US one can exit a roundabout in only one direction (if you enter the roundabout by turning to the right - as we do - and continue in an anti-clockwise direction of travel - as we do - you can exit the roundabout only by turning right). On US-spec vehicles, directionals - once activated for a full turn (as opposed to indicating a lane-change) - will stay active until the wheels turn straight forward again. If I activate my directionals to turn into a roundabout they stay active until I exit it. I understand that negotiating a roundabout in a clockwise direction would place the Tesla's directional buttons into the driver's crotch (rather than at the top of the wheel) but are Aotearoans required to activate and deactivate indicators as they traverse a roundabout?
That's correct. We are required to use the turn signal to EXIT the roundabout (even when going straight). So in your language. You will always have to indicate "right" to leave it no matter which of the three exits you are aiming for. The problem is. If you are going to the third exit you have to show other traffic you are going around the roundabout by indicating "left" first. That's the real tricky point as you have to then indicate "right" part way while the wheel is locked near upside down. You can be ticketed for not doing this correctly.
Yes. And in Australia. And in pretty much any country where roundabouts are common. When approaching a roundabout, if going exactly halfway, i.e. straight through, you do not indicate on entry. If going less than halfway you indicate left on entry (right in a LHD country). If going more than halfway you indicate right on entry (left in LHD country). As soon as you have passed the exit before the one you intend to use, you must change the indicator to left (right in LHD countries) to show you are taking this exit from the roundabout. This is easy with stalks. And yes, you can be fined for not doing it
Pretty much anywhere in the world except N America, you're expected to indicate which exit you're taking. You'd fail a UK driving test if you didn't (which isn't to say all qualified UK drivers bother!). Indicating your exit lowers the accident rate and lets people entering the roundabout know whether it's safe to go. There are lots of roundabouts in Europe; when I go 2 miles into town, I have to negotiate 5 of them. I drive a 2022 Model 3 LR and plan to change it early next year. The new one won't be Highland unless that nice Mr Musk puts the stalks back.
Thanks for the review. For me, the biggest cons is that they removed the ultrasonic sensor. Instead, it uses the camera to measure distance for parking...
Excellent review. And that's the reason I do not drive it. Too many weak spots in my book. My BYD Seal is almost perfect by comparison. Greetings from Adelaide. Bye.

I have one, and they're all fair points you make. I wonder how you found the driver assistance? I like it but have nothing to compare it with...? The indicators take a while to adjust for sure but I'm on board now.
After owning a Model 3 performance for a couple of months, I have still not been able to adjust to the lack of turning stalks, just how you have demonstrated. I might look for an after market solution. Other than that, I am happy with the car.
I don’t know, I don’t like it. I have a MS and am so used to the screen being more streamline. I’ve never liked how the screen sticks out on other models. Drove a M3 not long ago, and didn’t like the handling or ride. I couldn’t handle no stalks though!
Totally. Did Tesla think they'd increase sales by removing the stalks? Not heard anyone say that was a good thing, but loads saying it's a bad thing. The most stupid decision ever which is why I'd never buy one.
@@mattg5303 yeah they were, because it is cheaper to not reverse them for right hand drive. But when it is just a button it wouldn't cost a cent. But they kept the buttons on the wrong side.
Great informative review. Reinforces my satisfaction in choosing Polestar and the one thing that really comes to mind is that I'm glad I'm not the owner of an EV that seems like it is every 10th car in traffic. Exclusivity is one pro that Tesla definitely can't claim. It appears that most of the cons can be related straight back to cost cutting so perhaps an indication that Tesla is feeling the heat of competition in many markets. Not a great look though for a vehicle that many buyers are extending themselves financially to get into their garage. No V2L because it conflicts with Powerwall's marketability? No 'granny charger' included to coerce owners into a Tesla wall charging unit? Had to grin over your Te Reo comments though. I've had voice dictated texts in the Polestar interpret Te Kuiti to 'Pico Woody'. Had my partner completely baffled as it was part of a home soon progress report 🤷♂
@@HarmLessSolutionsNZ wanting an EV to be exclusive isn’t Tesla’s goal so they’re doing something right. They’re not the car for everyone & Polestar even more so. Given more model 3 are purchased than any competitor model it seems plenty of EV buyers are overcoming your perceived issues.
We were thinking of upgrading our five year old M3, but now we will just keep what we have until someone brings out an EV with at least 50% more range than we already have. Personally I don’t think it looks any better than the old model, just a bit different 🤷🏼♂️
So they're now not only deliberately encouraging unsafe interaction with the big screen, but also unsafe hand placement on the wheel.... fantastic. The removal of indicator stalks is such an obvious US focussed change, they don't really have roundabouts, so it's turn on the indicator when driving straight then just wait for auto cancel. The need to indicate left while turning right isn't a US problem.
I don't understand the belief that one has to interact with a Tesla's screen while driving. I've driven Teslas for several years and I've never had to touch the screen while driving - not even once. As Gavin said, nearly everything can be controlled by voice or the physical controls on the steering wheel. The wipers and headlights, for example, can be activated automatically or by voice and wiper speed can be adjusted by voice or by the scrolling a thumbwheel on the steering wheel. When controls do appear on the screen they always appear in exactly the same place so there's no need to go hunting around for them: Cabin temperature controls, for example are ALWAYS on the bottom edge of the screen, closest to the driver. How this differs from a physical button, I don't know...
@@narphizoidvoice control is patchy at best. Now you cannot change the gear without using the screen. Roundabouts are less safe, 3 point turns take longer and are less easy, these changes are not needed and not helpful.
Couldn't agree more re dull interiors. Where are the tan colored seats , interior door panels, white steering wheels. Yes I remember the interior of jaguars of yesterday year. Yes I'm old, (75 years old) & drive an MG4 & the interior colors are a disappointment also.
I can't imagine anything worse than tan or brown interiors. I loved my Sienna brown TR6 with tan leather upholstery, but that was in the 70s, almost 50 years ago. White in the Model 3 is a delight.
Ordered M3P in August, Tesla will only commit to "before Christmas". Unlucky co-worker ordered MYP in May '24, and has the same October to December '24 delivery ETA. Ouch. Aussies get theirs in a month or so, so it's not RHD, but probably the poor EV sales in NZ after the subsidy disappeared.
Yeah, that's what I thought would be the case with the indicator buttons. I strongly suspect that the people saying they're fine are also the same people who either don't bother indicating properly at roundabouts or don't even know how they're supposed to indicate. As much as I like some of the other changes, I'll be sticking with the stalked version, personally.
@sheryltrainor3784 I can judge plenty well by just observing the driving around me. If you do everything perfectly then clearly the logical assumption would be that my comment doesn't apply to you, I'd have thought. Oh well.
A thumbs up for another sweet Gav review :-) But would I ever buy/want a Tesla? Maybe a few years ago, but now? Yeah, not so much. That removal of stalks for indicators at the very least is a complete deal killer, let alone Tesla's other issues as mentioned.
Did you ever say what type of Model 3 it is? It makes a difference with range, etc. So far, the rear-drive Model 3 Highland is showing 383 miles of range plus--all the other reviewers are backing that figure. Navigation works perfect if you speak English. And Elon is the Howard Hughes of our time and deserves respect!
Always love your reviews. Elon could even qualify as Darth Vader going to the dark side. Can't even bring myself to look at him without my skin crawling and I am a 5 year Tesla owner. As for the buttons, look to the 2012 Citroen C4 fixed hub steering wheel for the compromise. You can have no stalks AND hub buttons that don't move. I will stick with my 2019. If EVs are to be green they need to last and I want to test that out. No comment on how it's gone so far as I don't want to jinx it, but so far so good. (Oops..er..oh well)
Designed in a country without Roundabouts (there is a huge one in Houston with traffic signs that tell the wrong drivers to yield because the Houston city traffic department has no idea how Roundabouts work !! Death trap!!).
Button indicators from the country that famously has no roundabouts. That tracks. Sounds like this car is destined to flop badly wherever roundabouts are to be found.
The US had no roundabouts (or very few eg one in Indianapolis) in 1996. They have since proliferated in towns across the country. A very good replacement for the 4-way stop that nobody knew how to use. Now drivers can be confused about roundabouts.
Great review. Like my '21 Tesla Model 3, would I buy another one ? No. Better cars out there now for the price IMO and Tesla's are eye catching for all the wrong reasons these days. Bit like Ranger drivers are always plonkers, Tesla's stick out.... badly.
I upgraded from the previous model and must say I love this model so much more and I prefer having buttons instead of stalks and have no issues at roundabouts now that I have worked out a method that is easy and works every time. I find it much more comfortable and smoother than the previous model and the interior is much more plush but I have the white interior which is even more plush than the black interior. I find I never need to look away to change anything any longer than if there were buttons as I have all of the apps I need along the bottom of the screen in a row as you can have up to any 5 apps along the bottom. No worse than having 5 different buttons. I find when I get into my partners Kia I hate all the buttons and always need to look away alot longer to find what I need and some are quite hard to find! I love the minimalist look inside and I know where everything is making it so easy. No keys needed either 😊
At least having no stalks is better than that stupid descision to have forward and reverse where the indicator is supposed to be. I wonder how many teslas have been reversed into the car behind when the owner went to indicate left at the lights.
Having two vehicles each with the wipes and indicators on either side I get irritated putting my wipers on at junctions. The argument people use that you'll get used to it is not true if you drive more than one vehicle. I'm looking at an older model x so it won't effect me noe, but in the future it would put me off a highland m3.
The lack of stalks solves a problem for Tesla, namely cost. As you rightly state, they're trying hard to cut so many costs it seems like penny pinching.
The Model 3 is now a third cheaper to make due to Tesla engineers' mantra - 'a gram less, a penny less, a second quicker...' every day. That is why in the US it is the cheapest brand to own and the purchase price is less than the average vehicle purchase and as promised at inception - the people's car. Tesla are the only BEV manufacturer (very) profitable. All the OEMs are stepping down development and production, with tanking sales. Simplification is all AI driven. Tesla's goal is full automation. Watch out for October 10!
They didn’t actually open their patents to other automakers. If you took advantage of the offer, Tesla got to use all your IP forever and you couldn’t sue them. No legal department in any automaker would take that deal and Tesla knew that. It was a charade.
Just watched. I enjoy mine. Indicator secret for roundabouts but on on top left entering and top right exiting for right hand drive usually. And game on while charging.
1:30 Wrong! 1. Our Y gets 280 after 37600 miles of driving, and got 300+ new. 2. Car you are testing gets over 360 miles at 70mph, see latest Teslararati. Both as specced or better.
Elmo has gone from boy genius to a rancid right wing creep. He feels he is beyond any laws or ethics. He is the new PT Barnum. It has been enough for me to not buy a Model 3, in spite of the fact that I really like the drive. I believe his sketchy behavior can bankrupt the company. Unfortunately Tesla's board of directors are cowards, otherwise Elmo would have been removed . Great review, cheers!
This appears to be the same steering wheel and gear selection they have been using on the S and X... ugh. I get that some at Tesla think we'll be using FSD all the time and that we don't even need the physical controls, but they need to check reality. I have trouble with my left hand and found the indicators hard to activate even when sitting still at a stop sign (test drove an X). I don't understand how this isn't an accessibility issue. Elon is temporary, and hopefully we can vote him out or send him to Mars soon. The sooner that happens, the better for the company and the US.

I like at least some real buttons and to open a glove box with a latch using your hand be it a driver or passenger. Now with Elon as well don't really want my money supporting the orange skinned alien so a no for me not that it ever would have been a yes anyway.
Bad enough having a touch screen dominated UI then they made it worse by removing the stalks, genius🤣. Also Tesla should do themselves a favour and distance from Musk and his Trumpian nonsense🤬
Hey Gav, all model 3 & Y have easy phone messaging built in & honestly it’s better than CarPlay. I will admit to spending a whopping $300 to install a wireless CarPlay screen just for Waze. If they brought Waze into the car display I’d be rid of the clunky CarPlay.
I’ve gotten used to the indicator buttons. My main gripe with mine is the interior rattles - the worst ones have been fixed, but there is still a geiger counter hiding under the dash somewhere…

Tesla voice control doesn’t give you audible feedback, instead you have to look at the screen to see feedback. Until I switched to another EV I never thought about it but it is a huge oversight, and I never saw anyone mention it in reviews. Especially bad when sending or reading texts in the car.
The car doesn't read the text to you? My Y does, I am confused.
If you tell the car to activate the wipers, do you need audible feedback? Shouldn't the wipers activating be feedback enough?
@@SamAlexCaldwell does it work well for writing and sending texts? Without looking at the screen? I don’t have a Tesla anymore, so I might have missed something, but I don’t think it works as well as Siri/Carplay which is almost flawless and in my language even.

I give this video 4 spuds out of 5. Love your takes
One pedal driving is something you have to learn. Times change and we learn new things all the time.
Aftermarket stalks available.
Indicators and wipers on stalks is a relatively new thing: Switches for these used to be mounted on the dashboard. Heck, directionals themselves are a relatively new thing: Learning to drive in the 1970s we were still required to learn hand signals!
@@narphizoid regardless of the mechanism, the control was in a fixed position and independent of the steering.
Getting use to the stalks doesn't take long and I was use to them in about 3 days and I am over 65! I prefer them now and would not want to have stalks again. Some people don't like change nor keeping up with technology whereas I have been throught alot of changes in my lifetime so don't find it a problem.
Completely agree and, yes, there's an aftermarket upgrade...but I wonder what it does for warranty?
Indicator stalks - very modern. The first car I experienced was my dad's Austin A35, and the indicators were controlled by a big Bakelite switch in the middle of the dash, twist it left or right, blinky tell-tale weak glow and plinky plinky noise to tell you it was still on as you drove off into the sunset 'cos it didn't cancel.
Meanwhile, I'll just wait for folks who's first car used the semaphore flags (like Citroën Traction Avant)...😁
And did the Bakelite switch move or stay in one place on the dash?

The last entry in the Cons list is the biggest issue for me, that's why I bought a BYD.
The lack of stalks is a big f*** y** from Mr Musk to all foreign markets

Excuse me but I indicate entering and exiting every roundabout so don't make assumptions and judge others on yourself!

"Soothing Potato Brown" .... I wonder if Bunnings will colour match that ... ;-)
Do they eve have roundabouts in the USA? It could be yet another US-centric solution that doesn't work when out in the world.
We have them here in the US but they are not nearly as prevalent as in other parts of the world.
They exist there, but they aren't common.
Almost non existent in California where Tesla originated.
I'm travelling in Canada and there are a few but not enough in my view. Too many 4 way stop sign intersections
Perfect for Perth drivers who don't need indicators at roundabouts.

Shame you never engage with us.
FYI, third party stalks are available
At least having no stalks is better than that stupid descision to have forward and reverse where the indicator is supposed to be. I wonder how many teslas have been reversed into the car behind when the owner went to indicate left at the lights.
Having two vehicles each with the wipes and indicators on either side I get irritated putting my wipers on at junctions.
The argument people use that you'll get used to it is not true if you drive more than one vehicle.
I'm looking at an older model x so it won't effect me noe, but in the future it would put me off a highland m3.
Is that true about the range? TeslaBjørn Sunday drives it over 550km.
Tesla were good early on, opening patents to other car makers etc. But yeah, Elon changed it and I reckon there are just better options out there now.
They didn’t actually open their patents to other automakers. If you took advantage of the offer, Tesla got to use all your IP forever and you couldn’t sue them. No legal department in any automaker would take that deal and Tesla knew that. It was a charade.
But there aren't any "better" options out there. Not even close.
