They rewrote the story because they lost the original game of death script, it was found years later and they refound the original footage along side it. The warriors journey documentary was the first full release of the original game of death footage. Before that they released pieces of the footage in the Bruce Lee, the legend documentary in the 80s.
I personally feel like there was no written script for GoD. I remember Bob Wall stated once that Way of the Dragon had no script, just ideas Bruce had and maybe some stuff in his personal notebook or something like that. I personally find it hard to believe that something like that wasn’t found, but maybe Shannon held onto that for awhile. Either way, glad his original ideas can be shared. Thanks for enjoying the video lad.
Raymond chow knew what the original story was as he had discussed the plot with him when he had visited Nepal for the movie the silent flute ,so that's bull shit Robert clouse just wanted to churn out his vision that's why he used the name Jan spears instead of using his real name.
I think it's a lot more interesting film if you consider the plot from a metanarrative perspective; because the circumstances of Bruce Lee's actual death were a bit of a mystery, a lot of popular conspiracy theories arose, including one where he was offed by the mob because he owed them money or something, and it was this that serves as the inspiration of the story of this film; that Billy Lo _is_ Bruce Lee, and he faked his death to escape the triads.
@@myfriendcameron that would make sense, but since they did recover the original dialogue, and game of death 1978 never knew of these dialogue passages and cut them out, it wouldn't have made sense for there to have no script.
Me personally I like the real Bruce Lee scenes from game of death. The real Bruce Lee when he fought Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Dan Inosanto and the take won do expert. As for the substitutes, I like the Bruce Lee double who fought Bob Wall in the locker room. I wish Bruce had lived to finish the entire movie it would have been better. Unfortunately Bruce Lee died.
The only good fake Bruce fight is the Bob Wall one. I’m not sure if some of the fight crew from GoD 1 went to work for GoD 2, because those fights are like Night and day. Thanks for watching lad.
I tried watching Game of Death II. But because I was so obsessed with comparing the Real Bruce to the obviously unbelievable look-alikes and the shameless clips they threw in from "Enter The Dragon" (clips that would have been good in an "extended scene" version And as Deleted Scenes in Enter the Dragon") , I didn't like it... not even for bad comedy. It was not genuinely funny... it was more like me- rolling my eyes-give me a break- stupid funny! I thought Bob Clouse did a better job with "Enter the Dragon", as far as the non -fight scenes go. But Clouse really got lazy with his version of Game of Death. In spite of how great "Enter The Dragon" was, (Bruce was obviously the reason I watched and it re-watch it) Warner Brothers company sucks!
@@myfriendcameron I recommend checking out the Chinese language version of Game of Death. Unless you've already seen GoD2 because the glasshouse fight got reused in that one.
I totally agree with you on how they butchered the movie and how it is impossible to try and copy or replace Bruce Lee. I saw the 'Game of Death' movie in 1978, in the cinema when it was released. It was one of the most anticipated moments of my teenage years as Bruce was my idol. I remember being shocked and disappointed at how bad the movie was until that final 10 minutes, when the movie quality changed and suddenly you knew were about to see that mythical, unreleased footage that had been talked and dreamed about for so long, the lost footage of Bruce about to go into action (or at least the edited parts they used for the movie!) The whole cinema cheered when they realised that it was finally there and about to be viewed. At the end of it you left the cinema even thinking it was worth the 80 min of embarrassing, disrespectful, sub standard crap that you had to sit through to get to it. It wasn't until years later when 'Bruce Lee, a warriors journey' came out that I realised that the makers of Game of Death, as well as making us sit through that skin crawling crap, still ripped everyone off, by leaving out so much of the original footage that could have been incorporated some how. All that movie was about, was cashing in on the immense popularity of Bruce at the time and his followers pining for more footage of him and prepared to pay any price to see him. It is not a Bruce Lee movie, it is a commercial cash grab, done in a disrespectful and skin crawling way. The movie makers and the paying public would have been better served, and respectful of Bruce's legacy, just collecting all of the unreleased footage and showing it in a cinema for what it was, brilliant, unreleased footage of the man in action, how he wanted you to see it! Any Bruce Lee fan would have paid triple the admission price for that! To this day I have never watched that entire movie again, but I have watched the original footage 1000s of times, on "The Warriors Journey" or You Tube. Oh and by the way guys, you failed to mention Sammo Hung's greatest movie moment and what made him a star. The opening fight scene with Bruce in 'Enter the Dragon"
All they had to do was make GAME OF DEATH as a documentary like WARRIOR'S JOURNEY with the John Barry score and they would have a great documentary which could have been nominated for an Oscar.
I only just watched It last night for the first time and as soon as the superimposed head happened I was like omg this is bad , and you saw they did what they did to complete the work and honour him but then there's Game Of Death 2 an even bigger travesty so it was all a cash grab , and watching the scenes that didn't make it into the movie including dialogue man it would have been an awesome movie and a much better story line compared to the weak and lame storyline they come up with , no idea why maybe they could give less credit to Lee and pay his family less residuals I have no idea
In the UK, the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification, aka the Censors) cut out ALL nunchaku scenes from Bruces films, including GoD ! When I finally got to see them, it was just unbelievable !
I remember a similar thing happened with TMNT. The one that used the nunchucks had to use different weapons and they were called “Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles” or something like that. Thanks for watching
I went to see GOODBYE BRUCE LEE, HIS LAST GAME OF DEATH in like 1976 thinking it would have the GAME OF DEATH scenes and all they showed was picture stills of Bruce and Kareem.
Game of Death, was actually the first Bruce Lee film I watched. I don't remember if I noticed anything unusual about the film at the time. It was until some years later, when I rewatched it, do I recall the scenes where actual Bruce Lee footage taken from his other films was used. Or when Lee's face is pasted over another actor's face. And even later, I learned that some of action from the original footage was not included in the 1978 version.
The original screenplay didn't exist, Bruce never wrote it, just some page of notes, so Clouse did what he can, and the movie was an international success thanx those final 11 minutes. On the other hand Clouse could not follow Bruce's steps without a real script and, all in all, he was not Bruce. His GoD was a good movie and made alot of money.
I like Game of Death. I like anything with Bruce Lee or anything that's Bruce Lee Related. I even like Marlowe, Even though Bruce Lee plays a Chump in that Movie who jumps off a Building for no reason at all. A quick Note about the Green Hornet Movie. There are actually Two Films based on the Series. The Second One was called Fury of The Dragon and It contains Footage from Primarily Three Episodes(Plus Clips from a few other episodes), I highly recommend this film for anyone who's missed the Green Hornet Series, or If you're someone who likes anything Involving Bruce Lee-Like Me.
There is a decent amount of stuff to enjoy about Game of Death (the music, the fighting, Bob Wall), but it deserves to be in a movie that doesn’t feel like a cash grab on Bruce.
I still can't believe that the director and producers of game of death cut out the real footage of the real Bruce Lee and then use all that stock footage and footage of the fake double it doesn't make any sense
The problem with the whole “he got plastic surgery” thing is it would have been a clever reason why billy Lo looked different, but it doesn’t make sense because they use the original game of death footage, and it seems as if the surgery never happened. Like they only said they gave him plastic surgery to squeeze out a thousand bucks from him…
Even before the pagoda fight, the movie still goes out of it's way to hide his face even after the plastic surgery, so that whole subplot was completely pointless!
And it's possible that some northern praying mantis would have been used as well for the sake of the audience. Early southern mantis practitioners were once hired as palace guards, since they were mistakenly believed to be praying mantis practitioners. Since then, the name "mantis" has been associated with the southern style.
Biao seems like a very talented action star. I haven’t seen any of his movies but I know he did a lot of stuff with Jackie Chan and Sammo Hung in the 70s and 80s. Thanks for watching and I’m glad you enjoyed the video!
If any studio / filmmaker wants to truly make Bruce Lee's Game Of Death a reality, follow these suggestions... Bring in a new martial artist actor, who understands and deeply respects Bruce Lee & his fighting style, to play the role of Hai Tien (no faker/wannabe-immitator actor)(facial similarity may vary). Include mild-to-highly regarded martial artist actors to play the role of the other characters who join Hai Tien, as well as martial artist actors for the bosses of the pagoda (it'll be expensive, but movie companies should learn to take a risk). After completing the fight scenes for the first few levels of the pagoda, do a meticulous shot-for-shot remake of the 40 or so minutes of Bruce's surviving footage for the last 3 levels (there's no point in adding improvements to what's already good). Don't have the character Hai Tien get beaten to a pulp at any point in the film (Bruce Lee's characters do get punched & kicked in the films he was in, but it's never to the point where he's on the floor groaning while a bunch of thugs kick him repeatedly in typical henchmen fashion).
I like this idea. Make it happen movie people. You should check out the stop motion adaptation of Game of Death gameofgianpa did. Probably the closest we will ever get to a complete version of Game of Death. Thanks for watching.
That is a damn good idea...there's actually an 18 minute short film on UA-cam that depicts a vague idea of how the start of the movie was supposed to be like before it takes place in the pagoda for the last 40 minutes. Watch that with the 40 minute uncut footage of Game of Death and boom it's somewhat your idea.
A remake might have to include some modern mma, to appeal to today's audiences. Especially with some of the grappling that was used in the original. Maybe the character portrayed by Lee would have had a background in mma. And/or one of the bosses or guards can be an mma fighter. Lee and Inosanto knew each other's tendencies very well, and it seems like it would be hard to replace that. And to a lesser extent, Lee, and Abdul Jabbar did as well.
What a video! first time watching it :) Lee's movies always make me chills when he screams haha the great question is why does he wear that black and yellow suit?
To be fair, the 1978 clouse version of Game of Death made sense to have him kick the henchman with that same suit , off his motorcycle and steal it off of him.
Honestly, as tasteless and stupid as it was to include his real life funeral, and how poorly spliced in old footage is of him, it's actually an entertaining movie with a decent enough premise. I actually like the idea of an actor being pressured by the mob to join them, and the lengths Billy Lo went to protect his girlfriend and himself. However the movie took itself waaaay too seriously and the legendary pagoda being reduced to a "restaurant" was kinda lame. And the fact that the original Game of Death was meant to be more of an action-comedy and you can SEE that once Bruce Lee finally truly appears on screen, it really makes for a jarring experience. The way he plays around with his enemies just clashes with how seriously the write-around script took itself. All in all, it's actually a decent film. It's already been said to death how bad it is and disrespectful it is, but in my eyes, it seems like people couldn't accept Bruce Lee's untimely death when the world was just starting to get to know him. This movie and other Brucesploitation films, I think, were just a way to commemorate Bruce's legacy because it felt like we just didn't get enough of him before he died, so he got imitated to death, and I could see how that could easily be seen as making a mockery of him. But that's the thing about being great, right? You can always count on being imitated but never replicated.
It's not a terrible film, it's only terrible in it's attempts to be a Bruce Lee movie. I actually used to find it really boring but the last time I watched it I found myself reasonably invested in the story, and even some of the original fight scenes are pretty decent; I dread to imagine what it'd been like if Sammo Hung hadn't been brought aboard to doctor the production! I do find it ironic that Game of Death II, despite it's smaller budget, more homebrewn production and more typical Golden Harvest production values, manages to insert shots of Bruce Lee much more seamlessly than the Robert Clouse film!
@@Takeshi357 Yeah GOD2 is a damn great film too. Especially with longer unused footage of Bruce Lee and pretty much using his real life backstory and child/teen acting footage to build Billy Lo's character. It felt more like the memorial I would only HOPE Robert Clouse intended for GOD1. (But obviously no matter what his intentions were, it's clear it came off as outright exploitation). There's a rare Korean version of GOD2 where they remove all of the Bruce Lee footage and "his" character entirely and has an entirely different story, and while that's a decent watch if you just want to get to the action, the Bruce Lee related stuff makes it a way better film. Not just because it's the man and legend himself in it appearing "one last time," but because it's a deeper and more interesting story with all that stuff in it.
As for the game of death movie I like when Bruce Lee fought Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Dan Inosanto, and the Tae Kwon do expert. I like the fight scene between the Bruce Lee double and Bob Wall in the locker room. I did not like when they showed the real Bruce Lee funeral footage for Billy Lo when he faked his death. That was really low. As for the Bruce Lee impersonators I like Bruce Le and Dragon Lee. Bruce Li is alright. I like the movie clones of Bruce Lee. I like when Dragon Lee fought Bolo from enter the dragon. As for the movie game of death it was okay but it would been much better if all of it was Bruce Lee himself. But unfortunately Bruce Lee died before the movie was completed, so I guess they had to do something to complete the film, but I felt they could have done it much better.
Wait did they find more footage? I just thought we were getting a new edit of the existing footage. And what was son different about the Mandarin cut of the Big Boss? Thanks for watching btw
If you google Robert Clouse you can find the picture I used as one of the top results. But Clouse does look quite similar to Heller so maybe the picture I used was mislabeled. Thanks for watching

I remember seeing this film at a grindhouse double feature around 1981 or so in Philly. I was appalled at the obvious exploitation of Bruce Lee. However, over the years I have come to appreciate the film as a campy classic. It’s got some redeemable parts ( the locker fight) and hell, the last 11 minutes actually make it worth it.
@@dannyplaza5474 I will admit, the film has some camp moments, spotting all the attempts to hide/not hide the double is always funny. But everything feels so boring when Not Bruce isn’t on screen, horrible actors and writing and all that. And the last 11 minutes are amazing, but there are so many ways these days to view even more of that footage separate from this movie. What was the other part of that double feature, if you remember?

With 100 minutes of footage the least the makers could have done is include as much of it as possible instead of just 11 minutes. Should have turned it into a 40 minute documentary followed by all fight scenes. At least the soundtrack was fantastic
20 years ago I bought the only Bruce Lee box set I could find and that movie was so distasteful that I threw it out and replaced it with Return of the Dragon as, since it was a Golden Harvest production and not Warner Bros, was sadly lacking. Out there exists a 25 min. reproduction of Bruce Lee's vision where he goes to the airport, meets with the thugs holding his sister ransom, meets the boss, and works out a deal and heads to the pagoda etc. I hope someday someone can film that again, deepfake Bruce's face onto a similar size actor and join it seamlessly with the existing 45 min. pagoda scene. With all the new voice cloning techniques, you could even get his Cantonese accent down perfectly. Shannon, what do you say?
I personally wouldn’t mind a different adaptation of Lees story. Maybe recreate the entire thing or just make the rest of the planned footage and put the original footage in the middle. But another part of me wants this Dragon to sleep out of respect for Lee. But I’m all for discovering new footage and other production stuff. Also, good call throwing out Game of Death, thanks for watching
They didn’t record sound on the set of Game of Death so it’s most certainly a voice double. The footage is from the Bruce Lee Documentary “A Warrior’s Journey”. This is the closest sound Lee double we have and it’s why I prefer the “Warriors Journey” cut over every other version of the 73 footage
Funny ass commentary vid about game of death I find it funny that the only "bad" bruce lee movie is only bad because they butchered the shit out of it after his death
Bob Wall was also in Fist of Fury. The only good thing about Game of Death 2 is that it contains some deleted footage from Enter the Dragon. Otherwise the film is a steaming pile of crap. I saw it once, and never again. It's unwatchable in my opinion.
Had Bruce Lee lived, "Game of Death" could have been a pretty cool movie. You would have gotten a good amount of philosophy served up alongside the action. Every character in Bruce's version of G.O.D. represents one kind of fighting style. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is the Unknown Fighter: to defeat Kareen and become the Ultimate Fighter, Bruce has to become a fighter with a style that's not karate, not judo, not hapkido, but unpredictable. All of this subtext is lost when Golden Harvest released the version of the movie you are trashing (and I can't blame you for that). Without Bruce directing this, the movie loses its integrity and becomes exploitation.
" Game of Death 2" or Tower of Power is Terrible. Mostly VERY bad fight choreography, and the " outtakes" were done just as bad as Robert Clouse's version but with FAR worse acting and choreography.

Lee and Inosanto knew each other's tendencies very well, and it seems like it would be hard to replace that. And to a lesser extent, Lee, and Abdul Jabbar did as well.
I recall seeing a hokey hong kong film called true game of death that tries to present the real story just with other actors
What a video! first time watching it :) Lee's movies always make me chills when he screams haha the great question is why does he wear that black and yellow suit?
Bruce could have dressed as a purple dinosaur and it would have still been mad iconic. Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed it
To be fair, the 1978 clouse version of Game of Death made sense to have him kick the henchman with that same suit , off his motorcycle and steal it off of him.
Im gonna watch game of death 2 it honestly looks alright
I’m surprised no one has deep faked this or Attempt to Do Bruce Lee’s Original concept using the footage along with Metahuman in Unreal Engine.
Game of death 2 classic kung fu
That Movie has some pretty good fights in It.
@@darkwolf-22 agree
I just watch game of death 73 and forget the horror of the 78 exploitation version
Hhhh
At least now we are getting the 2 hrs of game of death footage they have found now in July and the big boss mandarin cut in my life time.
Wait did they find more footage? I just thought we were getting a new edit of the existing footage. And what was son different about the Mandarin cut of the Big Boss? Thanks for watching btw
Really? That’s fantastic news if so.
Obviously it’ll still be an incomplete film, a lot of that footage will just be outtakes, but even so… wonderful!
@@horrorfanandy4647 most of it is there now as people have now seen it in the cinemas. Minus the saw scene
Where's da doctah??????????????????
Hahaha

You added a photo of Paul Heller, not Robert Clouse.
If you google Robert Clouse you can find the picture I used as one of the top results. But Clouse does look quite similar to Heller so maybe the picture I used was mislabeled. Thanks for watching
@@myfriendcameron Yes, the photo you got from the movie database is labelled incorrectly. That is definitely producer Paul Heller.
@@squatch545 Then it’s my bad, I’m not that familiar with Paul (even though he was still a big deal in the Enter the Dragon/Game of Death scene). I’ll be sure to fact check pictures in the future. Thanks for the correction.
@@myfriendcameron Cheers.
@@myfriendcameron it was the kung fu movie “Roar of the Lion”… I can’t remember the actors but they t was by far way better than Game of Death… true story lol… me and my friends would do anything to make a little money to see these movies.. shoveling snow, delivering papers,.. anything to make money to go to the grindhouses on Saturday afternoon to get my double feature kung fu flicks… magical times man!

Gee ...a movie where the stand ins do the dialogue.
To late. I watched it this morning. I was like what the hell is going on.
I was to slow
Bonjour Monsieur Jean
With 100 minutes of footage the least the makers could have done is include as much of it as possible instead of just 11 minutes. Should have turned it into a 40 minute documentary followed by all fight scenes. At least the soundtrack was fantastic
They should call it "The Final Game Of Death"...
...oh wait---
20 years ago I bought the only Bruce Lee box set I could find and that movie was so distasteful that I threw it out and replaced it with Return of the Dragon as, since it was a Golden Harvest production and not Warner Bros, was sadly lacking.
Hugh O'Brien fighting Bruce Lee... or even one of the 'doubles'.... what a laughable riot!
They didn’t even bother to try hiding the double
This os the real Voice of Bruce Lee ? I think is not , but is Very similar
@@myfriendcameron I love de footage of the Warrior journey!
Why can’t they recreate the end with deep fake cgi ???
Colleen Camp Taylor Swift grandma 😩😩🤣🤣🤣🤣
Funny ass commentary vid about game of death
I find it funny that the only "bad" bruce lee movie is only bad because they butchered the shit out of it after his death
Bob Wall was also in Fist of Fury. The only good thing about Game of Death 2 is that it contains some deleted footage from Enter the Dragon. Otherwise the film is a steaming pile of crap. I saw it once, and never again. It's unwatchable in my opinion.
I believe it was Bob Baker in Fist of Fury.
Your wrong bob wall wasn't in fist of fury it was his student bob baker
Game of Death 2 is the Brucexplotaition archetype. hahahah...
Probably the only good Brucexplotation movie there is
@@myfriendcameron true.
Fight in greenhouse - was originaly in HK version of game of death. In the western release, they cut this scene and added it to the tower of death
Bruce tried to damage the martial art sport which didn’t sit well with the martial artists
Too late. I saw it when it came out. I should have asked for a partial refund. Otherwise, I strictly avoid Bruceploitation films.
" Game of Death 2" or Tower of Power is Terrible. Mostly VERY bad fight choreography, and the " outtakes" were done just as bad as Robert Clouse's version but with FAR worse acting and choreography.
