Brilliant review!! Love that you also talked about Silvia Moreno-Garcia’s other works and her goal for her career as a whole. I also thought it was such an incredible book! Definitely agree about how the horror elements felt purposeful and were used as social commentary. I also LOVED Noemí as a main character and how she enjoyed feminine things and didn’t have to “grow out of” those things in order to be smart and competent - I feel like that’s still something we see quite a bit with traditionally girly characters so I love that SMG didn’t do that here. And I was also really satisfied by the ending! I actually filmed a “reasons to read” video that I still need to edit, hopefully I can be as concise as you! 😄
Without spoilers: I have always kind of loathed romance because i felt like no matter what I read, from what genre, or author, it felt forced or fetishized or uncomfortable somehow. But this book? OH MY GOD!! I actually had moments where i had to close the book because i was blushing. Blushing!! SMG does sweet fluffy romance so so so so well in this book.
I just finished Mexican Gothic. I was not expecting that twist. I knew it was a horror story, but it went in a completely different direction than what I was expecting. I still really liked it.
I love Gothic books in general. I thought this one had great 1950s thriller vibes aka a Alfred Hitchcock movie. I appreciated the looming sense of unease and something dark nearby. BTW-I would not categorize Wuthering Heights as a romance unless you want to be disappointed. To me it’s a Gothic tragedy.
It was a great book! And Wuthering Heights is definitely not romance as we think of it today, but it is considered a gothic romance, and those are often tragic.
Just finished it yesterday. Never been in horror or gothic. And I finished it at 4AM. It was not what I expected. Culminated as you say was a good summation for the end.
I’m almost finished with it. Yeah, it definitely drags on, but it’s getting better. I definitely got the racism, colonialism. and misogyny vibes. It’s brilliantly written! 😀 It’s almost making me want to smoke and I quit four years ago! 😭😭😭 I’ll get through! 🤪
Bro thought he was a Targaryen lowkey, raising a whole family like that. That family was doing too much. All in all I thought it was a good read. It was the first book Ive read for fun in ages and I really enjoyed it. To think that I only picked it out because there was a hot girl on the cover.
Just finished it...very disappointing. Agree with you the first 200 pages are excellent, slow burn, atmospheric, mysterious like a good gothic novel should be and liked the characters very much but...Once the mystery is revealed is convoluted and sometimes downright ridiculous. The last 30 pages are cliches and common places that you can see in cheap movies. Too bad because if the author would have written a classic gothic novel and not horror i would have liked it a lot. There was a good book trapped in those pages. Plus, not scary at all! Take care and am glad you liked it.
I just finished this book. The sexual assault and attempted rape were triggering for me. I had to skip to make sure Noemi was going to be ok before continuing. Apart from that, I really enjoyed the book. I felt like I was there, in that house.
Thanks for the review. I am not a horror reader. I thought it was more of a psychological suspense novel, so this was very helpful. I will check out your Goodreads review. I may try out her noir or romance titles. 😌
I don't really like horror, but I am not 100% opposed to it either. I am more tempted because I really liked "The Gods of Jade and Shadwos". It is on my maybe in few mothns TBR. The review was really good :)
I have 4 chapters left. I like it but so far I don't love it. I bought it completely blind. I just saw the cover and heard it was horror. So, I picked it up. I do have to say, I'e skimmed over the sexual assault. I can't stomach reading about it. I do understand why the author has it in the book though.

Thank you!!! She's an amazing author and I loved the way she did the horror here. I need to watch your video!
I knew nothing about SMG so I’m glad you discussed her career and other books! Super excited to read this one. Also love the eyeshadow! 💙
Yay, thank you! I hope you enjoy the book!
As a Latina and fan of the horror genre, i need to read this. Thanks for the review.

same honestly, especially in fantasy.

I’m reading this one right now, absolutely loving it so far. Hope to finish over the weekend!
Glad you're enjoying it!
This one sounds like a perfect storm of everything I love! Hope to get my hands on it soon!
I really loved it!
I noticed she addressed those social issues as well and did a good job incorporating it into her story.

This isn't my genre but that cover might just get me to try it out.
I was clearly a fan!

Currently reading this with a friend! Definitely loving it!!
Thanks for not spoiling it 😆 looking forward to reading this
Honest question for my own enlightenment. I have no intentions of arguing, but what is an example of cultural appropriation in Mexican Gothic?
It sounds like a Mexican ya book version of a Jordan Peele movie lol 😂
Yes actually! It kind of is. 😂 Except it’s definitely not YA!
Dude I'm reading it right now (about a third in) and this is exactly where my mind went hahaha
It’s kind of a mix of get out and the yellow wallpaper.
@@danarodz3275 I knew that lol. I actually didn't finish Mexican Gothic. I wanna get back to it!
