    The expression of the woman in the painting behind you says it all, fascinating ! 🙂 Time for your own show Adam!

    Honestly would've loved to see you go through the whole collection. 😁 As someone who buys and sells guitars, it's always fun to see collectors talk about new additions.

    Loved every minute of this. I appreciate your methods of purchasing. Makes the less affluent bibliophiles feel that there is hope that somewhere out there are dealers who appreciate our treasures. Interesting microphone on your shirt. These videos are fabulous.

    This might be my new favorite of your videos! Honestly i would gladly watch every minute of every book buy you make. IMO, your commentary and thought process is a master class in antiquarian book dealing. Fascinating!

    Thank you Loved the chance to see your thought process, I once bought a box of books at action in Wellington KS, as a 15yr old and found a first edition American printing of The Gods of Mars, I am 60 now and still have it as well as hundreds more.

    The density of detail in the woodcut on the title page of the Bible part of the Book of Common Prayer is just incredible.

    These sorts of forays are always interesting to me. It's just like Christmas to see what you've got, ha ha (as I upbraid myself with a snide inner voice "so, you must be dry as dust to find fun in this...")--yes, yes I am, sorry!

    I've been a book an antiquarian dealer and bibliophile for over 40 years and really enjoyed this.
    I'm astonished that you bought a box of books "blind"...for THREE GRAND!
    Surely you had some INKLING of what was in there? 🤔
    There was some real beauties there...particularly the silver-clasped Bible and the Spanish binding.
    I'd love to have those.
    I was surprised at your dismissal of the "New York" book? Although I am British and live here in England, early American history, and books, really interest me, and I have quite a few in my library.

    • @RareBookBuyer
      @RareBookBuyer  2 місяці тому +1

      Just quick dismissal based on value and condition - not content which is interesting. If it’s under $100 sadly as a rare book dealer with limited time - I dismiss it but don’t mean to disparage its historical value . I take blind chances a lot if the price sounds OK.

    That antiphonal would make a cool display, even with the text block missing. Condition and clean up the leather and mount it on something on a wall. Great conversation piece.

    I love accents & I find your accent as interesting as the books! I’m an old bookseller, so that’s really saying something. 😄
    I have a feeling that the most money may be in the folio pieces…perhaps enlist services of an archival picture framer.

    I love your shows Adam! Around the turn of the millennium I used to love visiting the auction houses here in Sydney to fossick through the boxes of dusty old books that were largely ignored by the antique booksellers - who were focusing on the known rarities listed individually. In one auction I picked up one box containing Charles James Fox’s 1774 set of The Spectator (complete with his bookplate in every volume), as well as the 1785 Wealth of Nations pair, together with quite a few other interesting odds and ends … all for the princely sum of $A30! The Spectator set was beautifully bound but sadly several boards had come loose over time; still, at that price I wasn’t about to complain!😊

      The middle market these days has a lot of underpriced treasures as a lot of dealers are now focused on the big prizes to keep their business going

    Do you have a catalog available for your collection of "bad books"? I am sure I would like quite a few to add to my collection. Unfortunately, I am in the west coast.

    Interesting Union Defense Committee! I sell civil war antiques, definitely going to watch your site for that. Adam, my father collected antique books. Do you have recommendations for determining values. One stands out - Wonders of the heavens - 1830s American Astronomical book... Funny the Blue laws were a total mystery to Hurricane Katrina refugees... I remember it well.

    What is your threshold for good vs. bad? I’ve been slowly upping mine and am curious as to what an established seller such as yourself does.

    • @RareBookBuyer
      @RareBookBuyer  Місяць тому +1

      I use bad loosely - not really bad books (some are very interesting) but usually less than a few hundred dollars as I just don’t have the energy or manpower to list books in that range and make the economics work

    Adam, after you discovered the Bible, you seemed to disregard the rest of the collection and I was very interested to hear about the letters and pictures as well as the notebook that you discarded as unimportant… What was it? I enjoy watching your videos…please take more time with the items that you think may not be valuable. The esoteric nature of the process of discovery is interesting in itself and your spontaneous commentary is also always insightful! I also would’ve enjoyed a cutaway to a Google search on Morse code and the muppets!

    • @RareBookBuyer
      @RareBookBuyer  2 місяці тому +3

      I didn’t mean to disregard. I just try to keep the videos to 20 min and I had a client waiting outside :) There were other interesting books in there but I ran short of time - but I agree I should have done the whole box. Also you can’t hear it in the video but my neighbors were screaming in Russian and it was getting hard to think :)

    The repetitive design of the red part makes it somewhat hard to look at and boring at the same time.
