In CA, there are many who do this sort of work without any kind of license, however, to be legal, a contractor's license is required in CA to do any kind of construction work over $500. There are licenses for nearly every type of trade, but nothing specific for doors. When I worked in CA, I got a General contractor's license, which I believe is a "C" license and that allows you to do anything. It's a very hard test for which you'll have to study a lot.
